Ok brains trust, I need some help...

Ds is nearly 6 mths and because he was increasing the amount of bottles he wanted, we started him on Farex. He has been feeding every 2-3 hours since birth and is taking 180mls each time.

Now he won't drink his bottles. We tried to give him his bottle first and he refused it, but will eat Farex. We're worried he's not getting enough formula as we know this is his main food source for the first 12mths.

Should we stop giving him Farex? Or are there any suggestions for us to try?

Thanks

Hi :)

How long has he been rejecting the bottle? Sometimes bubs go off their food a bit - specially when its hot.

I would maybe try cutting back the farex, see if that makes a difference. As you said, its the milk that is the most important part of their diet.

Is he rejecting ALL his bottles? Or just a certain feed? Maybe he is ready to drop a feed?

GTG, hope that helps.

As long as he's taking the recommended amount of bottles it should be ok, so add up how many mils he's drinking in a day and you might be surprised?
If he's not drinking at all then I'd cut out the farex until he's drinking again. Maybe he's ready to switch to step two?
My son went through a period where he wouldn't drink his bottles so I changed from the S26 Gold to normal S26 and that helped.
Sometimes when it's hot they don't feel like drinking, or if they have a blocked nose that can put them off.

Good Luck - he won't starve so try not to stress to much

He doesn't want his morning bottle and we only give him 1 teaspoon of Farex mixed with formula and mushy pears.

He's been rejecting it for the last week and its been very hot over the last week, so that could be it. He will still drink water, which is good.

Yesterday he went a whole 4 hours without a feed. First time ever!

I'll try cutting back the farex I think, see if it makes a difference.

Thats what you wanted wasn't it? Thats great that he's lasting four hours, I know how you feel my DS was the same he would feed every 2-3 hours, and was a shock when he started drinking less, but it's a good thing . If it's just the morning bottle then thats ok.
It's good that he's drinking water, but do you try formula before you give him the water?

All too familiar.............

If you do a search on this topic, you will find around 10 that I posted.

When we started Tayla on solids - rice cereal and pear puree, she totally went off her bottles. We went to the doc, CHn and called helplines and they all said not to worry about it.

basically we increased her food and mixed it with formula. As long as bubs is weeing etc, all is ok. It's just a phase as they switch onto solids as it's a new taste and texture.

Tayla went from 6-8 x 150ml a day to only around 4 if we were lucky!

I'm glad there are others about with the same problem!!

Yes, 4 hours is what I have been after for 5.5 months.

I'm not so worried now. Thanks girls

I stressed for 2 weeks!

Tayla went off farex very quickly to the pear and banana baby rice with pear puree in it. She went from one teason to one full cup (mini tupperware size) in a matter of days so I managed to sneak in around 50 - 80ml of formula in it!

As long as bubs is happy, putting on weight and doing number 1s and 2s, all is sweet.

It's so hard as we have it drilled into us that they must have XXml a day etc but it is only a guide and some will have more and others (like Tayla) do the extreme opposite!

The day my bubs went from wanting a bottle every 2hrs to 4hrs was the day i did the happy dance hehe !
And that was always my cue that he wanted more to eat via his solids was when he started wanting a bottle every 2hrs again.
Ive also found my bubs refuses his bottle when its hot so dont stress too much as my CHN told me they will drink when they are thirsty & they get a lot of fluids from their fruit & vegies.
Dont stress if bubs is happy & alert & has plenty of wet nappies all is fine :)

This morning I waited until K was almost screaming for food (I feel really mean :( ) and he drank his bottle first then ate 2 teaspoons of pear and banana Farex. Yee Haa!! Hopefully I won't have to feed him again for 4 hours...
