Hi all!

I was just mentioning that it will be my DD's b'day next wed (unfortunately I have to work and she will have to spend the day at childcare :gloomy: ) and her carer said that I might like to bring in some fairy bread or some cake providing it is nut and egg free so they can give her a little party.
I was later thinking about it and was wondering if fairy bread is actually ok for the little ones??
I would've thought that the hundreds and thousands would be too tiny and easily get caught in their throats etc. I guess it is ok otherwise her carer wouldn't have suggested it, but I think differently! I normally wouldn't even think about fairy bread at this age!
Have you guys given your kids (between 10mnths-14mnths is the age range in the nursery) fairy bread at this age?? Am I being too causious?

Either that or I have to try and find an egg free cake recipe....I don't know what else to take along.

In theory, from a choking point of view, I think it would be the bread that's the bigger issue... and most 1 year olds can manage bread ok.

Nutritionally, it's another matter  but is a party, so it's not like they'd be eating it all day.

Good luck with the egg free cake :)

It's basically coloured sugar, on white bread spread with solidified animal fat  But like Wendy said - it's a party, special ocassions call for "treat" foods.

But saying that - I wouldn't give it to a 1 yr old

Re: egg free cake:
I dunno if this is the same thing - but my gran told me a trick of how to bake a cake even when you're out of eggs - for each egg the recipe calls for, use 1 dessertspoon of custard powder and 1 dessertspoon of vinegar. I've done this quite a few times, and the cake looks and tastes normal.

I've heard this too, but does custard powder have egg in it? You wouldn't be able to make this kind of cake for daycare if it does.

I have made a cake without egg before, will try to find the recipe, or ask my mum for one tomorrow for you.

As faeml said, bread is more a choking hazard. Couldn't imagine anyone of any age choking on tiny little balls..

I did actually crave fairy bread a month or so ago, so had to indulge in it at that very moment... unfortunately DD was awake and I had to share lol
She was ok with it, but wouldn't do it again for a long time!!
....House was bright, colorful and needed a vaccuum!!!!

oh, yeah, custard powder probably does have nasty stuff in it :o Sorry.

I've learnt something about fairy bread (my daughter is coming up to her 6th birthday) You must make it immediately before serving. If you make it the night before, the colour leeches out and you will have bread with streaky blue-grey butter and little white balls on top. It looks like the butter's gone weird and you've put sago on top....

Ick, fairy bread.

Yuck.

Not suitable at any age IMO

I can't see a problem with it. I'd cut the crusts off the bread though.

You can even make it with those other coloured sprinkles.....the itty bitty stick shaped ones.

I wouldn't let my dd eat fairy bread especially at that age. JMHO though.

So that's what you do without using eggs! Thanks Queen! I never knew that!
cwsmum - If you could post a recipe I'll be very grateful!
I think I'd rather try the cake than the fairy bread! I'll see how I go for time!
Thanks all for you advice!
oldermum - Happy Birthday to your little one also!!

i can't see it being harmful for your child, my 15 month old loves fairy bread (he only has it occasionally).
The carer wouldn't have suggested it if it was bed as they have to follow strick guidelines as to what they feed the children.
With the egg free cake mix, just pop into your local supermarket and check out the health food range, they should have some in there, if not just call into the local health food shop. They def should have one in there.
There is a brand called No-Egg, this has mayo, cakes and bicsuits in this range.
In the end if you don't think your child should be eating fairy bread then don't let them. maybe you could try doing fruit skewers instead???
Happy bday to DD by the way

My little one has been eating bread on her own (feeding herself) from when she was about 7 months old with no problem. In fact I'm watching her right now eating a hot cross bun with much delight!

Re - fairy bread - my daughter has had this at a treat at a lot of 1st birthday parties with no problem.

I feel like fairy bread now!

My DS loves fairy bread and probably had it for the first time around his 1st bday!
