View Full Version : Phoenix????
Help!!!! :D
We are completely stuck on baby names!
My DF loves the name Phoenix for a boy. I do like the name a lot but does it sound a bit well, pansy (for lack of a better word) to anyone?
I really like it but I can't get past this little stumbling block in my head.
Honest opinions please!
hey ..
sorry but I dont like it (you asked for honesty!! :o ) I just cant see it in the school playground...
but then I DO prefer the more traditional names...
could it be the middle name??
are there any other names you are thinking about?
((hugs))
It doesn't sound 'pansy' to me, but I wouldn't use it either. Could it be a middle name? Of course you may get used to it, I wouldn't say no straight away if df is so keen.
My hubby is set on Calla Rose (pronounced Carla) for a girl (if we have a girl!) I didn't like it and had no good feedback either, but now it's grown on me and I may agree to it. Such hard decisions! Good luck to you.

I like it :D
But then again I really like unusual names..........Hmm Orlando? :p hehehe
I like the fact that there wont be 4 or 5 other Phoenix's in his class at school, also its a really cool, cute name :)
Its a winner for me, that said dont name your bub that unless your completely happy with it.

My brother in law's 8 month old daughter is called phoenix, not many people like it but you learn to put up with it but you do learn to not say it much.
Catherine
I like it, but he might get sick of spelling it.
I like it too but maybe it would be better as a middle name.
Mim
I am not a big fan of Phoenix but if it is any help I don't think it sounds "pansy" at all - I think it sounds quite strong.
I love the name Phoenix,I don't think it's pansy-ish at all.I agree it's quite a strong name, and as someone else mentioned, you won't find many other kids with this name. :)
I like it, not for a boy though, and hate to say this my mum's poodle is called that lol :o
My friend's mum's cat is named this. I was just teasing him yesterday calling him by saying "Phoenix Arizoooooooooooooooona!" And calling him "Peenix" and.. yeah.
Sorry to say, I can't see it on a little boy. :(
This is what Amber and Conrad named their baby (once they eventually got him and got rid of Tanya) on Footballers Wives!
I'm all for unusual names, if there's kids out there called Moxi Crimefighter, Audio Science and Apple, I'm sure you can get away with Phoenix. :)

I love it, and i think its a strong sounding name. I think it'd be good for a boy or a girl. If you love it then go for it!

I think if you have doubts on a name then dont pick it...
My husband and I can only agree on one name so far even though I like heaps more... I think in times like this we just have to go with what we both like ....
But I do agree with the others that Phoenix would be better as a middle name... but hey remember the choice is yours...
Good luck

Phoenix reminds me of the late River Phoenix. Im not to sure of the name Phoenix, but I really like the name River. Have you thought about River for a boy? I think it is a very strong handsome name!
Hope this helps! :)

I've only ever heard of it as a girls name (I think Scary Spice's daughter - you know Spice girls - is called Phoenix Chi)...........
It is a very strong name and these days names are pretty universal (for both genders).
I always say the name becomes the person anyway, so no matter what people think you love the name because you love the person IYKWIM !
Thanks guys! :D
Phoenix is now at the top of our boys names list! The only reservation I had was that I didn't know if it was strong (manly!) enough.
I'm not really into the more 'traditional' names, hey if we all liked the same names, the world would be a pretty boring place!
Leonic, I love the name River, but DF doesn't. And Willow is at the top of the list at the moment for a girl!
I'm not concerned about pets sharing the same name, if I went by that I really wouldn't have many names left!
Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

From "Behind the Name" (an awesome website)
PHOENIX
Gender: Feminine & Masculine
Usage: Mythology, English
Pronounced: FEE-niks
Derived from Greek φοινιξ (phoinix) meaning "dark red". In Egyptian and Greek mythology the phoenix was a beautiful immortal bird. After living for several centuries in the Arabian desert, it would be consumed by fire and rise from its own ashes. This cycle was repeated every 500 years

my friend just had a baby girl (2 hrs ago!) and named her Phoenix... but it is a unisex name
in the end the decision is urs!
hey Mim,i love it DH hates it,he is more traditional which sucks,we cant agree on anything. if it comes across as not manly enough maybe a hyphen something like Phoenix-James so that there is a definate masculinity to it,then if he wants to he can shorten to PJ. I also love Willow. One of my dads friends daughters is Willow-Rose and i think it is such a lovely name.. good luck.

My Husband wanted to call our baby Phoenix...
Problem was he likes to restore cars as a hobby and his favourite car is a 67 Dodge Phoenix...

Aren't men crazy!
We were going to call DD Angus (after Angus Young, ACDC) if she was a boy and then decided she was the last, so I called our puppy Angus. DF is spewing that we now can't call this one Angus so I have given in and this one (if it's a boy) will have the middle names Bon Scott  .
Poor poor baby.

I like it. We were considering using it, for a girl or boys name. We settled with Xavier instead.
We like names that not everyone has, but our family would have hit the roof if we had named him Phoenix, they tried for nine months to get us to change our minds on Xavier. I like Willow too, it's very pretty.
Someone said that it reminded them of River Phoenix, I loved River Phoenix - had a crush on him as a kid especially after the movie 'Stand by me'.
I also like Joaquin Phoenix (his older brother)
Joaquin is a cool name too (Pronounced Wha- keen)
Sorry to get off topic!! I know a little girl named Phoenix, I think it is a very stong name, and has an awesome meaning - not pansy at all! ;)

I think you have to put yourself in their place when they are adults and introducing themselves. Would he be happy with it? But I do like the name very much.
Don't say sorry! I want honest opinions!
What do you all think about the name Jonas?
i once knew the cutest little boy called Phoenix:D

All the best!
Lauren
I have to say when I saw the title of the post I was thinking of Phoenix as a girl's name. But to be honest I don't really like it for a girl or boy.
