OK I am confused.
The best kind that I have found on-line are called Hotslings and the reason I like them is that there are no rings, no clips, no things to dig in to me. But I'm interested in what kind of sling y'all are looking at? I've also found a website where I can make my own, but to be realistic, I probably wouldn't do it.
Also the cost factor is surprising me. I know baby things are "priceless" ie it shouldn't matter how much they cost - but the prices I've seen are between $70-$150 ..... which is why I considered making my own. But these Hotslings, I've found a plain one which will cost me less than $60, including shipping from the US. But are they better if they have a ring, or a quick-release clip on them? And should I get one that has UV protection built=in, or maybe get a waterproof one so I can wear bubs in the shower (part of me just screamed inside.... that's like the ONLY time I get to myself :p !!)
I'm really confused!! Don't third-world women just tie a bit of cloth around themselves!!????
I've got pretty cheap ones made by a WAHM in Melbourne. I'll PM you her website. The rings don't dig into me at all and never have. Ds has been in the same sling form birth, at 4kgs and is now 11kgs at 2.

If you position your sling properly you won't feel the rings at all.
I love hug-a-bub for newborns, and I'm hoping soon someone will start making a cheaper version of them, Because I need a summer one!
And I have a hipbubby ring sling, made to my own fabric preferences and at a much better price than the Maya wrap... Which I have also used!
Clip on slings... err I used one before I heard of ring slings and I found them really hard to get baby in and out of.
I love the way you can slip off your ring sling and put down a sleeping babe with minimal disturbance!

I just bought a Comfy Carry cos it has mesh through the centre and I'm hoping it will be cool enough to us eup here in Darwin....the hug a bub was far to hot!
I think the comfy carry has a buckle...and no ring? Hasen't arrived yet, but very excited about it arriving!
Hi Queen
I have a hot sling and love it - I bought it from Australia though - Amanda at www.carryingaway.com.au carries them - she is based in Brisbane. The fabrics are great - different and funky and unlike anything you can get Australian made.
I also have an ergo baby carrier - also from Amanda which is not like the baby bjorn pouch where they are "hung" and which can cause problems with their hips - as new borns they lie in it with their legs together, then when they are old enough to sit they sit in the pouch with the weight on their bottom rather than their crotch. It also adjusts so that you can use it up to about 5 years - all fabric, no metal clips. You can't pick them up second hand as people use them for years.
(And I had a baby bjorn too but having used the others would never go back - they also have a very limited use of about 6 months which is why you can always buy them 2nd hand).
Oh - I should add that Amanda also tailor makes her own slings and carries a large range of other slings and is very helpful (and a WAHM) so can assist you to work out which one is best for you.
I know its not a sling as such girls...

Thanks everyone.... I've got a new favourite past-time - looking at sling sites!! LOL my DD loves looking at them with me too, as she's very fashion-conscious (god only knows where she gets THAT from :p ) I would rather a plain coloured one, not too bright, I don't like to stand out in a crowd..... but she wants me to get the brightest one with swirly patterns on it
Thanks for all your suggestions and I'll let y'all know what I finally decide!
:)
We have the Baba Sling Its great. I used it the day DD was born and still using it today. The phone number for Baba sling is 1300 66 999 2 or http://www.babaslings.com/ see what you think.

Hi Queenie,
I don't know if they are any good, but I've seen some on Ebay that you get a matching child size one with it for free. The Princess would love it!! ;)

LOL yes I've seen those child sized ones!!! I will definately be getting one for my little Princess, she deserves one because, you know, she's having a baby too (ie she's got a baby in her tummy too  ) She keeps saying "no i can't clean my room mummy, my baby is hurting me....." gee I wonder where she got that from :D

Last night, I had just had enouh of all the umming and ahhing over choice of slings; I've had a Kapoochi (nightmare to get in and out of! for parents and the child), and I have a lovely traditional style ring sling which is still a bit tricky to use; best for a sleeping newborn, and now I need another version, so was very much tempted by the simplicity of the Ramalama. I just went ahead and ordered it, but was wondering, after reading this tonight, if anyone has used one?
And once the brand of sling is chosen, of course the next choice is COLOUR!! I want one to go with every outfit! :p
DH picked the blue sling, as pink apparently didn’t match his taste???. But it match DD's taste. It took me ages to work out that her beautiful BLUE tongue was the result of sucking on the sling rim..
Hello!
Long after my wearing my son days were over BUMMER....LOL a friend told me the cheapest way to carry your baby was to get a square cloth of soft material. If you want to carry your baby on the back to tie criss cross at the front, the opposite if you want to carry at the front..
It really was comfy I did try if for fun to carry him on my back ,he was then 3 years old and it was excellent...
We did start with the baby bjorn it was good in the early days, then about 9 months of age we got a baba sling used it until 2 1/2 of age.
I have seen a very lovely mum wearing here baby in a hug a bub in the early days, if I ever get to wear a baby again I think I minght go for a hug a bub in the early days rather than a baby bjorn..
Cheers Malin

I vote Baba It is the best. I was given one of those hanging carriers the biorjn?? with my first it was revolting baby was never comfy circulation cut off to his legs, then I got the Baba never looked back its good from birth to whenever they don't want to get in it anymore and it works front or back. My husband liked the backpack type for camping and bushwalking its a catmando or something too big for me.
I used a 'hatchling' sling for my son when he was smaller, it is a mesh one, so very good in summer, and they are extremely well priced.

In fact, with this new baby due, i will be buying one of her stretch mesh slings to use in the shower.
My main 'sling' this time with my newborn is going to be a 'lana' sling, which is actually a 4.4m piece of woven material, more a wrap, very like a hug-a-bub, but less stretchy, and you can use it for back carries as well as heaps and heaps of other carries, reminds me actually, i must get practicing with it, baby will be here pretty soon! :p

Rather than start a new thread, though feel free to do so if any of you have heaps of information, can you guys give me some ideas on easy bf while out in public with the sling?
I've tried it a couple of times but not been sucessful. Is there a type of shirt you find easier to do it in, what carry do you recommend etc.
Oh & I have a ring sling if that helps with your descriptions :)

Feeding in the sling? It depends on the size of you boobs to what type of shirt you wear. I found a button up shirt good as you can leave it undone and your boob in the sling (its covered by the material of the sling) and away you go instead of hitching up t-shirts. Singlet tops are good too but I have small boobs (B-C) and I could flip it out over the top but its not good for the straps of the singlet top. Anyway thats my advice. Hope that gives you a starting point

Re: Feeding in the sling.... I am a boombaladah and have ginormous breasts. Currently (I'm 22 weeks pg) I'm an E cup, and they will surely grow even more once I'm breastfeeding. When feeding Vallerie, they went up to a FF. My question is, will I be able to feed bubs in the sling, or will there be a suffocation risk??
