Hi all,

My 11 month old DD is a bum shuffler. She sits and when she wants to go anywhere she pushes both legs out and then brings them in and shuffles/bounces along on her bottom. She looks like a little frog!

She has gotten really fast!

She shows no sign of wanting to crawl. When we put her on her tummy she screams. She doesn't try to stand or walk either.

She has rashes and carpet burn on the outside of her legs and bruises on her ankle bones from shuffling. I am worried she might be doing damage to her hips or legs.

Has anyone ever experienced a bum shuffler?

I was a bum shuffler myself! :D My hips are turned out and it has caused me quite a bit of knee problems throughout my life, especially when I played netball regularly. But I'm not sure if that's from the bum shuffling, actually I'm quite sure it isn't because my mum and sister are the same and they weren't bum shufflers! It must be hereditory  sorry I'm not much help am i!

i know a few people who have had bum shufflers and they are all fine. they never crawled, just got up and walked eventually. Ive never heard of a child causing damage to their legs or hips because of it.

im sure she'll be fine

Evie was a bum shuffler  never crawled, she looked so funny scooting along. When her legs got rashy and bruised i would put tights on her or a bandaid on her ankle, never had any ongoing probs though, she was walking by a year;)

My little one has been bum shuffling for months, but on the day he turned one, he learnt to crawl :yelclap: Now he bum shuffles on smooth ground like polished floorboards or tiles and crawls on the carpet. But they'll be fine. Don't worry.

Ohhh my no 2 son was a bum shuffler for...wait for it...20 months

In the end I took him to kids physio and she told me to raise his world, i.e. take all his toys off the floor and put them on a table - it was lucky we had a long coffee table in the loungeroom - so he'd have to cruise on his legs. We also got one of those dog thingys on wheels that he could hold on to and walk along.

He simply wasn't strong enough in his right leg to walk (it shuffled in front of him while his left leg did all the 'pushing') - so these two 'exercises' strengthened his legs. We were even told to sew some pants together in the middle so he couldn't spread his legs to bum shuffle but that was a disaster.

I was a very happy and emotional woman when he decided to walk. He's 3 in a couple of months and no ill effects leg wise.

Charli bum shuffled for about a month, got quite quick at it too! She has started crawling now, but still looks like a frog! I can't see her getting up on her knees any time soon either!

My sister went straight from doing the booty scoot to walking!
