I am thinking about teaching myself how to knit,i have found a website with directions and stuff.

Do you think it is hard to teach yourself?

Has anyone ever done this before?

Any tips?

I soooo want to learn how to make cute shorties and longies :p:D

Nope, but also thinking of teaching myself! My mum cant knit, but shes not very patient :o. (I think I wore her patience out when she was teaching me to drive! :o).

I taught myself in a weekend

I recommend lots of patience and nice big chunky needles to start with! Wait till you knit your first garter stitch scarf...you'll be so proud!

my grandma taught me when i was 4, then i didnt pick it up again til a couple of years ago, now i live in melbourne i knit all the time, still have to concentrate pretty hard on patterns but i upgraded from scarfs to a jacket with a hood and a pair of mittens. I found an actually book rather than net instructions easier too, as they explain things step by step then say refer to page 2 if you cant remember... i got "easy" and "kids" patterns to start with.

Good luck, i need to start on baby clothes now!!!

I didn't EVER learn to cast on that way. I cast on with 2 needles, not one needle and your thumb & fingers. That has always looked wierd to me when I see people casting on that way. Maybe as a personal challenge I'll teach myself to cast on that way.

This site teaches you to cast on with 2 knitting needles. It's pretty clear instructions and pictures.

  Good luck and happy knitting.
I can't wait to see a picture of your first attempt.

My mum taught me the basics and then I practiced for several years. Eventually I made a few things for my first baby and then couldn't stop. I am amazed at ppl who can teach them selves quicker than that!
It taken me 20 years at least to get this good! :o
I have been teaching myself to crochet and that is fun. I have no idea if I am doing it right but it works!

Yep I taught myself last weekend. Really enjoying it so far. I'd recommend knitting something really simple to start with, so you don't worry when you stuff up. I'm going for a square :) (well square-ish anyway :o ) It took me ages to figure out how to actually knit once I had all those stitches cast on  and I got a bit too excited with the casting on so it's probably going to be a pretty long and skinny square.

I have been knitting for about 5 days now!! I am teaching myself from a book and from knittinghelp.com...and also cheezelkat has been my online tutor.:p

Its really quite easy once you have seen it done a few times, the videos on knittinghelp.com are great!! My book was just confusing the issue really, I had to re-do the same piece of knitting about 15 times..:o but now its looking great.

Im knitting a soaker, ive learnt how to cast on, knit a stitch, purl a stitch, YO (yarn over), k2tog (knit 2 together) and do an eyelet hole...

Phew Ive been busy!!

Its fun!!

I too taught myself a few years back.
My nan taught me how to crochet when I was in my teens but found it hard going to 2 needles. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it though and very addictive.
www.knittingpatterncentral.com
Has guides to teach yourself and loads of free patterns.
Enjoy:D

Other Brisbaneites - sorry I can't be the only knitting tutor. Not patient and I'm not good enough to be teaching. If a more experienced knitter jumps in though, I can help.

I learnt to knit when I was about five. When I hit my teens I knitted alot and then took a break and now back into it.

If anyone in Sydney wants to learn to knit I would be happy to help them.

Most wool shops hold knitting workshops too. I was out and about the other day and went into two wool shops and they both had a knitters circle going.

I'm learning right now, my MIL has got me started, and I'm starting on the tiny bird longies, I figure if I start on something I really want then I'm likely to keep going  I think I'm up to about 50+ rows or something. I've done a few woopsies, but luckily for me my lovely MIL only lives 5 mins away so she has come to my rescue and fixed it for me
