View Full Version : OMG! He's getting out of his cot at 9 m/o! What do I do?
Thomas turns 10 months next week and this morning, we had the hugest surprise when he started to knock on his bedroom door to be let out!
WHAT THE!!!
HE CAN"T EVEN WALK YET! He only started crawling 2-3 weeks ago, this is just way too soon! He has been pulling himself up for a couple of weeks, but is still very wobbly. Do I put the side of the cot down so at least he doesn't fall so far?
Do we buy him a new bed? We'd thought about getting him a toddler bed, but he is such a wriggler during his sleep, I would hate for him to fall out. We have a port-a-cot, but he's almost too big for that already! DH and I just don't know what to do.
Any suggestions PLEEEEAAASSSE
Ummm, I would suggest putting him straight into a single bed if he's such a wriggler. You can get those side bar thingies that stop them falling out - and if you're ultra worried about it, put a single bed mattress or a thick doona or something next to the bed, 'just in case' he does fall out.
I've had pillows on the floor around the cot for about a week now incase he accidentally flipped himself out, thankfully. So he would have had a softer landing.
But when I go and check on him during the night, he is usally at a totally different end of the cot to were I layed him down to go to sleep and in a totally different direction.
Where has my baby gone?
Maybe he's been watching the wiggles too much???! :p (sorry! :p )
Do you have a spare single bed? or even just a mattress? if he still has day time naps, try putting him to sleep there and see how he goes. If he freaks out, then he may not be ready for a 'big bed' yet.
Hmm, wiggles, maybe LOL. :p
We have a double bed in the spare room, I might give him a go on that. I think I'd have to put the mattress on the floor though (he has already fallen out of our bed  )
This might be a stupid question but is the base of your cot as low as it can go?
I can think of a couple of options - the first is to see if the base can be lowered, the second is to buy a deeper cot, and the third is to put him to sleep on a mattress on the floor - you are right - he is still too small for a proper bed.
THe portacot option is another one as the sides are harder to climb.
But I agree - OMG!!!!
We're dropping our cot to it's lowest level over the weekend. PJ isn't showing signs of climbing out, but I don't even want to put the thought in his head!!
Nathan didn't ever bother, we only put him in his 'big bed' at 15mnths because we'd been away in Cairns for a few weeks and he slept in a single bed very well.
But PJ is a totally different kid, he's into everything- where Nat was content just to sit and play, we may have to actually child proof the house
The base is as low as it can go unfortunatley. It is an older cot that was my brothers 15 odd years ago, but he didn't even try to get out of it  . We are lucky in the fact that it is not as high as some of the newer cots.
I just think I am going to have to go with the mattress on the floor idea. At least until I get our port-a-cot back of my mum (Thomas is having a sleep over at nanny's on the weekend).
It's just too soon, I'm not ready!

I don't think I will have that problem luckily.
My dd is so short she will probably be 3 before she can climb out. :D

I know how you feel. Thomas is into EVERYTHING! I am just glad that he is pretty obedient and also, easily distracted.
(Obedient as in if I so not to do something, he wont do it. Not as in a dog, sit, down and roll over LOL)
You poor thing hon!
Nat walked at ten months! PJ has done everything about a month early - I'm so hoping he's not walking in two weeks!!! He's tried, he turned and tried to walk away from DH the other night and fell on his face, it just worries me that he's trying  I really don't want a nine month old walking!!!

lol, but absolutly gorgeous, none the less!
Sorry I don't actually have any suggestions to help.
I just had to comment and say WOW getting out of his cot at nearly 10 months that is incredible.
She may not be able to get out of the cot Michelle, but she's going to walk soon ;) :D
Any teeth yet by the way??
It's just the scariest thing when you peek through the door, and there is NOTHING in the cot  ! Your heart stops! I am just glad that I always peek in through the door first. (It's a little peek a boo game that we play when he first wakes up. I wont go in the room until he give me the biggest smile and chuckle). Otherwise I would have slammed the door in his face.
I think I'm on the right track KB. I might see if DH can rig something up for the time being.

Yes,heaps. Thanks
Either that or a straight jacket LOL :p
Just having a squizz on Ebay for toddler beds, and there are some really cool ones. When he wakes up now though (he is currently asleep), i will have to pull the cot appart and put the mattress on the floor. The worst thing is going to be child proofing his room ! Where to start!
Gaffa... Classic, must give it a go :)
