i am not pregnant yet, but we are planning to start TTCing in october. i need to organise which hospy i will birth in, but i dont have any clue where i can go....

i'll be having a c-sect under general anestetic. i want DH to stay with me in the hospital (in the same room). i will be classed as a high risk pregnancy.

so, do you think i'd be better to go private or public? if i can get what i want through the public system, that's what i'll do. otherwise i'll have to go private.

in which case, will i need to get private health insurance, or can i just pay for the private hospy out of my own pocket? and which are the best private hospys in perth?

oh, too many choices to be made. i need to do it now though, in case i need to get health insurance - there's a 12 month exclusion period for maternity.

TIA

I can strongly recommend King Edward in Subiaco. I had my twins there and am having my next bub there in July. Staff are fantastic.

They should do what you want the public, but can I ask why the c-section will be done under a general???

I went to St John of God, Subiaco. It was fantastic, midwifes were great and DF could stay.. (We had a Double bed).

It is a bit pricey though, so Private Health Insurance would be recommended.

My OB was Adam Gubbay, he was also fantastic!

i would say for you to go private, i went to king edward and partners cannot stay over night once you have had bubs, and im not sure how public hospitals go if you elect a c-sect

I had DD at SGOG Subi, but with a diff ob, and they were GREAT! Adam Gubbay is my Ob for this pregnancy and he is very very thorough and understanding!

Oh and SJOG Subi have recently refurbished too

I had DD at Mercy c-section with local - Fantastic stay and hubby could have stayed, but I sent him home to look after DS.

I was in a single hospital bed for my first night (hubby was offered a fold out bed in the same room), but the next morning I moved into a double bed where hubby could have stayed anytime.

Goodluck!

As far as I know, the first night after a C/S you need to stay in a single bed because of the medication. (I got moved from a double bed room to a single after an emergency C/S).

I know that Murdoch SJOG (private), Subiaco SJOG (private), Galliers (Private) Ward (at Armadale/Kelmscott Hospital)and Glengarry (private) all have fold out beds that partners can stay on. Murdoch, Glengarry and Galliers also have double beds that you can be moved to after you have recovered from the C/S.

When I had bleed at 12 weeks in this pregnancy I had to go to KEMH (public) and as I am from the country, I was asked if I had anywhere for DH to stay as partners are not able to stay at KEMH. I'm not sure if that is normal, or just if you are having difficulty.

One of my friends had her bub at Swan Districts Public and they only have shared rooms-no partners allowed to stay. The same at Bentley Public (except there are some private rooms, not that anyone I know has had one yet).

It might be worth contacting the individual hospitals for their policy. As far as I know all the private hospitals in Perth have facilities of some form or another for partners to stay.

Dr Adam Gubbay is my doctor too (yay for the good feedback, he's been good so far for me too) and I'm going private health.
I've heard different opinions on what is better to go though, i.e. heard that private you can sometimes end up paying anyway but sounds like that also depends on which hospital you go to as well; and I've heard that with public you hardly pay anything but yeah I really don't know, just what I've heard.

You will be out of pocket if you go private. It cost me a whole $135 (I think) to have DS at Galliers Private ward at Armadale/Kelmscott but that was 20 months ago and fees will have gone up.

At Murdoch this time I will be out of pocket at least $500 straight up and probably much more than that. It is not the hospital that is expensive or the OB necessarily but the anethsetist (SP??) and paediatrics afterwards.

You will have an excess to pay on your hospital cover (mine is $200) which can be up to $500, plus the other specialists as they bill seperately. In the private system you have to pay for physios, lactation consultants etc yourself. (You can claim only a portion back).

My SIL had a bill of $10,000 (yep) out of pocket, after having her second baby at SJOG Subiaco. Some of that was because she had to come to Perth via RFDS and she needed all sorts of specialists because someone gave her the wrong medication. But I think that is what you are up for if you pay yourself. She did have insurance too, but I'm not sure what sort. Fortunately for her $10,000 is an average shopping trip...(just kidding, but just about true-can't tell I'm a tiny bit jealous can you???)

In the private system, it is all free.

If I could get what I want in the public system I would be there in a shot. But alas, it is not to be, so private it is. The good thing is though, I did a tour of Murdoch on the weekend and it is like a hotel-fridges and coffee making stuff in all the rooms, nice views, plush furnishings etc. But seriously, you can do without all the extras, especially when you look at what you are getting charged!

Hi,

I had DS at SJOG subiaco (elective C-Section) Adam Gubbay was my ob through my pregnancy however Glen Lewis did my C-Section as Adam was on holidays when the week it had to be done. I was exceptionally happy with both Ob's and the anethatist during the procedure was fantastic. He was a older gentlemen who pretty much did epi's and spinals for C- Sections.

I was in SJOG during the renovations and there were no double beds available. You do need a single bed for the first day or so with a C-Section, so that they can wheel you back into theater if required. The provided a fold out mattress for DH - At mercy (where my aunt is a midwife) they move you into a double bed apparently after a couple of days for you and DH.

I had some issues with some of the bills being sent to me rather than HBF which was inconvienent. While in Africa we have a different private health company and I have no idea what is covered!
When I get pregnant with Number 2 I will be going back to Dr Gubbay in Perth - Although I think this time I might go to Mercy, I was not overly happy with some of the nursing staff at Subi.

I went to the C-Section information sessions run by Subiaco and we were told that there is a certain percentage of women who elect to have their C-Section under General Anesthetic, I think they would be considerate of your wishes.

When I was there in January, the Maternity Ward had been Renovated and I had a Double Bed in my room :)

wow i didnt realise adam gubbay was so popular  and lucky me got his services for free :smiliedance:

methinks i might ring the individual hospitals and ask their policies..... i've narrowed it down to either king eddys or SJOG subi......

thanks for your replies

im not sure how public hospitals go if you elect a c-sect

I can say that as far as electing a c-sect, I am having no problems with King Edward agreeing to it.

Generally if you wish to go to a private hospital without insurance it will cost you around $5000 - $6000 for an elective c\section. So if you plan on ging this way insurance would be better. keep in mind that some of the insurance companies require you to be a member for 12 months pre baby being born ( if you take the minmum time you will not be covered if baby is born early ). Go to KEMH and its all free.

I am with the PPs re SJOG Subiaco- loved it! I had Nic Tsokos who I cannot recommend highly enough. He gets booked out quickly though, you have to call once you have a positive pregnancy test in order to get in.

The midwives at SJOG were FAB!
