My son is 13 weeks old and at the moment is congested in the nasal area. Can anyone tell me what I can use to help him breath easier. I know there's panadol etc, but is there anything along the lines of vics vapor rub that will help with clearing the nose for littlies like him?

Any advise would be helpful, there is nothing worse than watching your littlies struggling when there a little under the weather and you feel helpless! :o

There is that new baby bolsom on the market, kind of like vicks for kids. My baby had the same problem when she was little and the clinic nurse suggested to rub the vicks on the top of my breast when she was feeding so she could breathe it in. I guess that can only work if you are nursing though. Hope this was some help to you, hang in there!

We use Fez "Little Noses". This is saline nose drops and a squeezy bulb with a soft tip for little ones to suck out the yukky bits. Totally gross to do but it clears them out. We got this from the chemist. We also have the Baby Balsam for sleepy time - I rub it on their pyjama tops.

Hi Jackson's Mum

There's two things I know you can try. Eukybear rub (available from chemists), smells a lot like vicks but can be used on babies from 2 months old (I think - better check if you buy it).

The other thing I've found particularly helpful if thier nose is so blocked that they can't feed or suck on their dummy is saline sprays or drops. I had some at home that I was given while I was pregnant because I couldn't use anything else and I have used the spray on my daughter (who would have been about 2 months old). I just held a tissue over her eyes and shot the spray up her nose and voila - a few minutes later her nose was clear. Since then I've also noticed that chemists sell saline drops to be used on small children that might be easier.

Any way best of luck.

Cheers

My son has always had a stuffy nose since he was born. At first everyone kept saying its normal for newborns and I tried everything to help him breath better- Fess nose spray, an aspirator, baby balsam. They didnt do much to help him, it wasn't until he was 7months old and skin tested for his eczema that he was diagnosed with allergic rhinitis (its like hayfever) and can be caused by environmental factors like being allergic to dust mites like my son. My son takes an antihistamine to relieve symptoms and I need to minimise his contact with dust mites eg he has a special dust mite cover for his bed, i got rid of all his soft fluffy toys etc. Those first 7 months were hard because theres nothing worse than watching your little one suffer and not knowing whats wrong.
I hope this helps

When my dd was younger she would get a very blocked nose while teething. My grandmother told me to rub olive oil on the bridge of her nose and this would help to clear it - needless to say, I thought she was mad but after trying a few other options I tried it and sure enough after about half an hour she was breathing clearly. I don't know if it was the oil or something else that finally kicked in, but, might be worth a try.

If you are breastfeeding, try syringing some into the nose. It clears out the mucus and has the added benefit of being antibacterial.
Or a vaporiser in the room- you can use eucalyptus oil or vicks with this. You can buy these from the chemists for around $50, they are very good for allergies/asthma type blocked noses.

Believe it or not, I woke up with a mild cold the day I went into labour so of course my little one go it too and for the first few weeks it was heartbreaking watching her stuggle with a stuffy nose(at the time I din't know about saline drops) anyway I stayed over at my mom's one night and she told me to put some drops camomile tea in her nose and it worked.

hi all,
when my 3month old had his first cold my friend lent me her Vicks Vapouriser, it was great, he managed to sleep through the night with being too snuffly...it also helped my cold too.

i highly recomend them.

i also had fess, i found the saline good but the little aspirtor very hard to use, i ended up just using a face washer to wipe out his mucus

the Vicks Baby Balsam was loveley to smell but i'm not sure how much good it did.

peace

My daughter is 11 weeks old and has a cough, runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. I've used children's panadol to keep her fever down and Demazin to help with her watery eyes. Euky Bearub has been rather effective but I wouldn't rub it in her skin as I put some on myself and it burned like Dencorub so I rubbed it on the collar of her Wondersuit. I found that taking her into a warm shower with me has helped as the steam loosens the mucus in her nose. I then use a cotton bud to clean out the remainants in her nostrils. I've also noticed that the Demazin helps her sleep more which has helped her recover a bit quicker.

we have a humidifier. Which I put eucalyptus and lavender oil into. I still have the one I had as a child and use it for my bubs. Also as reccomeded from other posters, breastmilk in the nose.

we use fess and the aspirator. she hates it but it certainly does the trick. one squirt in each nose and her nose is running like a faucet. she has to bad colds since she was born due to the fact i had the flu once beginning of june and once middle of july.

My daughter had a cold that developed into croup. She was very congested. We used eucalyptus vaporiser solution (alternatively eucalyptus oil) in her vaporiser (also known as a humidifier). She slept a lot better in the warm humid room.

Also used vicks baby balsam (can be used from 3 months). I have also been told to rub the vicks into baby's feet and put socks over the top. Not sure how this works, but I tried and it seems to help!

Also got paediatric nose drops from the chemist. These could only be used for 3 consecutive days at a time though.

Hope these ideas help some little noses!!!

Every Time I Have Taken My Kids To The Doc With Stuffed Noses, They Recommend Fess Nasal Spray But Drops For The Little Ones With Aspirator. I Also Use A Humidifier In The Room For Nights With Eculaytpus Oil. Seems To Work Well. :)

For Under Twos Steer Clear Of Dimetapp And Demazin.....only Just Found This Out (as I Used To Give Them To My Little Boy From 2 Months), But Apparently Whatever Is In Them Is Linked To Sids....new Study! :(

I use a vaporiser with eucalyptus oil and saline drops in the nose. They both seem to work well.

I have to agree with Willsmum - Fess-little noses worked a treat on youngest DD from 6wks.

The breastmilk is a new one to me - I might have to try that for me as I am nasal blocked every night and nothing seems to work.

OK ... what I am about to suggest is pretty gross, but it was suggested to me when I had my bub's in NZ hospitals.

If they have a blocked nose, put your mouth over their nose, suck gently and then spit the mucus into a tissue. It clears their nose really effectively and although it is gross to think about, it isn't too bad when you actually have to do it!

I did it once for my dd and it worked a treat! It removed the blockage and her nose started to run freely and she was breathing much better consistently by the morning.

OK, feel free to discard this advise ... I know that it sounds really foul!!!

steam inhalation or a vapouriser from the chemist
