I love being a SAHM and have never been busier, it wasn't always that way though and I used to feel lonely and unsure of what I was doing.
I've tried working part-time and working from home, but for now for me voluntary work is the answer, it allows me to socialise, use my skills and creativity and be acknowledged, while still spending all of my time with my children.
It has taken me a few years to adjust to being a SAHM, the idea of not working is hard to get your head around at first and people asking 'what do you do all day?' and 'when are you going back to work?' Makes you question what you're trying to achieve.
I worked hard at making friends, I found when I finished work that my work friends didn't have anything much in common with me anymore and I had lots of questions that only people going through the same things as me could answer. So for me in lots of ways playgroup has been a saviour and probably the reason why I have enjoyed being a SAHM for nearly 7 years. (Yikes sounds like a long time when I say it like that!)
Last year some friends and I started a non profit group and that has been so much fun, we've been on the radio, the national news, in magazines and the papers we have a website too.
But mostly we've achieved heaps for our local community and I really believe we are beginning to make a difference in people's lives.
Is anyone else doing voluntary work in their community?
What is it that you’re doing or would like to do?
Why did you get involved?
