I don't understand how politicians can keep saying childcare is affordable. Affordable for who? We have two kids using childcare so that we can work to pay off our mortgage. The Costs are crippling - its almost not worth
working.

I agree.
I spent a few hours doing the sums recently to work out what it's going to cost us when I go back to work. We will have two in childcare (family daycare).

The end result - I am going back two days a week. Because if I go back five days a week, with two kids in care, we will have the same amount of money in our pockets as we will if I do two days once daycare is paid for. Plus I would hardly get to see my kids.

Basically the more hours I work, the higher my income - so our childcare percentage goes down and my childcare hours go up - and our out of pocket fees go up. Crazy but true. I'm kind of happy though because I didn't really want to go back full time and now I have the hard figures to prove to DH that it's not worth it anyway.

You know, I think childcare fees would be affordable - if we had their income to pay for it!!! I honestly think they need to come and live an average families wage for a month - pay all the bills, do all the hard work and then decide how much monetary worth families are to the government (I figure put it this way - children are getting heaps expensive. Why have more kids, if they are so expensive, which means they wont have enough taxes to support our aging population in 20 or so years. They need to look at both the short term and long term!)
