View Full Version : Second trimester - feeling different.
Well I am 17 weeks this week and for about the last couple of weeks I have been feeling really different.
I have no more all-day nausea and I have been feeling myself again apart from being tired.
It worries me a little bit.
Has anyone else felt different in the second trimester?
I know they say the 1st trimester is the worst - so I am probably just being paranoid :p

Generally you will feel better in the second trimester:thumbsup: Alot of poor people who suffer extreme morning sickness or other health probs may continue to feel ill throughout the entire pregnancy ( I feel terrible for these girls there are a couple of girls in the Due July thread who are going through this) :gloomy: but generally most of us are feeling good in this part of the pregnancy.
You may start to feel tired and heavy in the third trimester and become what most women refer to as "over it:rolleyes: ", wanting bubs out because it gets pretty uncomfortable when bubs gets bigger and doesn't have much room in there!
Anyhoooo, don't worry it is normal that you are feeling good now, just enjoy it while it lasts lol!!!!

Hi I am 17 weeks and I feel exactly the same as you. I started to get worried that something was wrong, but I got myself worked up over nothing. I feel bubs move now and again so I know everything is ok. Am just looking forward to my scan in 2 weeks just to make sure all is ok.

I am 18 weeks and am feeling great!! No more nausea or sore (.)(.)'s and I have more energy. Apparently the second trimester is called the "honeymoon phase" because you are usuall over the yuckiness of m/s, energy levels are back up and you're not too big yet to be uncomfortable!
Thanks everyone for your good advice ....... I really can't wait for my next scan so I can take a peek at bub again :)
Thanks again.

I am not feeling better like alot of people keep teeling me I should.
The M/S isn't getting better and I still feel like I could sleep all day and still be tired.
Biggest problem being that I can't sleep more than an hour to 2 hours. I have a problem with my legs. I get woken by pain down one side that my doctor has advised is a nerve in my lower back. The pain starts at my thigh and moves all the way down to my foot.
Is it normal to be like this?? Will it last all the way through??
Any advice of hints would be great.

DueInAugust I know exactly how you feel. I too still get morning sickness and am utterly exhausted all the time. had to take a couple of days off work because my tiredness was affecting my work. not good. Did you have back problems to start with? i did, and its so much worse now. I find a heat pack on the small of my back and onto my left buttock helps (as this is the leg that gets shooting pain down it) and sleeping on my side with a pillow between my legs. this baby thinks its a game though, no sooner do i get comfortable and the pain decreases enough to actually let me sleep, the baby decides i need to get up to go to the toilet for the 42nd time that night. I also find rocking from side to side while im awake tends to stretch my muscles in that region (like shifting your weight from leg to leg) helps, as does a long hot bath... and i keep reading contradicting info about bathing, some say its great for sore muscles, others say its too hot for the baby... i like baths so i just make sure the bump is out of the water. good luck, and i do sympathise with you, unluckily for me its almost 5am and im still at work... been here since 9 last night, get home at 8, but iv got an appointment with my midwife at 4, so this baby is getting reinforcements to not let me sleep!!! Oh well, lucky i love it!
Good Luck

Carli and DueInAugust - that really sucks :gloomy: but yes it's normal. Unfortunately some women have m/s all the way through. A friend of mine started taking tablets at week 17 for the m/s (she's 22 weeks now) and the tablets are allowing her to feel normal again!

Thanks all for the reasurance that this is normal.
Carli- No I have never had back trouble before. My doctor has told me that the pain is caused by a nerve in the left lower back being cut off.
Scyatica is the name of it.
Thats why the pain is down the left side not the right. He said laying on your left side when sleeping is good for it.
At least now I know there is a reason for it. But there isn't much you can do.
As for baths I love them to and refused to stop when I fell preg.
My Midwife also told me Its ok to have a bath aslong as its just above your body temp and not hot.
thats it for me today.

scyatica refers to compression of the sciatic nerve which runs from your spine through your buttock, which is why the heat pack in that region tends to help, and movement also releases the muscles around the nerve, i.e. makes them less tense as all exercise does, therefore relieves the symptoms a bit. i used to get it all the time before i was pregnant and the only thing that helped was swimming, heat and panadiene forte... well we know that one is out unless we want stoned little babies, but the other two did help relieve the symptoms a bit, you just need to do the stretching etc when the pain isnt too bad otherwise you wont do it cos it simply hurts too much...
Good luck with it all

Why couldn't my doc have said that atleast if he had I would have known that sitting all day is why it hurts so much.
I have thought about swimming. I used to love it and have heard the baby loves it to.
Heat packs I have never used are they easy??
A hot bath has helped but I never want to get out again!
AngelGirl- Is it really helping her feel better? Was it her doctor or midwife that put her on them?

its ok hon, im a nurse, doctors tend to not tell people things in laymans terms, and often forget about the non traditional things we can do to help, thats where nurses come in, unfortunately we dont have them in the community, try talking to your midwife they usually have a lot of really helpful suggestions as they hear it all everyday!

Yes, she's feeling a lot better. The tablets are called "Pramin". She takes them 3 times a day and said they're a lifesaver  . I think it was her Obstetrician that prescribed them.
