View Full Version : That DOES NOT go in my bin!!
Hmmm..over the past week I have had 2 visitors and both have bubs in sposies. Well they both changes bubs and OMG they put the sposie in MY bin! lol
TBH I really wanted to say NO when they asked if they could put it in there but you can really can you?
And I don't really know why it upset me....I mean its just a nappy! But it kinda defeats my purpose of my contribution of not adding to landfill by putting it in my bin.
Ok rant over....only a clothie would understand!
LOL Ok well now I understand this but before I did this all the time to my best cloth buddy (Hi Leisha! and Sorry!! :o) when I was still a sposie user...
I would have been very confused if she had have said no to me back then

I think it's ok to say "no we're an MCN household :D you can put it in the big bin outside though, thanks!"
Pretty sure it goes to landfill no matter what bin it comes out of luv.
The garbage man will never look at you through the same eyes now though
I don't think I would like it either now that we are sposie free. If I look after other bubs here I would use cloth on them.

Did they put it in your wheely bin or house bin!!
I would be annoyed too, but you cant really tell them to take it home with them can you...??
Well you can...hehe..but it wouldnt go down too well:laughing:

I used to use sposies when we would go out but I would never put them in someone elses bin, thus (IMO) defeating the purpose of them.....therefore I stopped using them :smiliedance:
Both times, 2 diff people in my house bin!! No poo just wet but still!! I dont want it in any bin...I sound so stupid and my DH laughed at me. He said I should have said NO but they would have thought I was joking

I would never let them put it on my house bin!!:shame:
I have told someone before to please take it to the rubbish room...we lived in an apt.

Next time tell them to come to my house if it bothers you that much.
A bit like telling someone "Sorry, but you can't use our toilet because I don't want to contribute to the water crisis" - not a very gracious thing for a host to do.
As I said:
Ok rant over....only a clothie would understand!

What did you want them to do with it:confused:
Wrap it up in one of their own useless plastic bags, tie it in a knot and take it home with them and put it in their own bin!

it does all go in the same place - but sposies STINK!! I don't want 'em in my inside bin!!
stellarella
08-03-2007, 21:54
Yeah, I think its rude even if you use sposies yourself...quite frankly.
IF I used sposies...and ESPECIALLY if I was visting a clothie friend then I would discreetly take my nappy home OR at the very least put it in the wheely bin...in secret..LOL.
However I will never be in that position...:D

I can understand not wanting it in the inside bin,but what about the wheelie bin,in a plastic bag. Surely thats gotta be ok?
stellarella
08-03-2007, 21:58
If they put it in the wheelie bin I wouldnt say anything obviously...but I would be secretly peeved...
Take that nasty stinky piece of pollution home with you!

I can totally see why you are annoyed.. heck !! I would have been too.
I also see it as a moral iss-ewe aswell even though they are friends and all but personally when i was using sposies on my children (before using cloth obviously) i would never put sanitary waste or disposables in anyone else's bin but my own. Not even when changing them at the shopping centre. I always wrapped them up and put them our own bin at home.
Now that i use cloth, not in a million years would i ask if i can use someone's tap to rinse off a dirty nappy.. just wrap it up and put it in a wet bag. So really it does go hand in hand and I see it more as a respectful thing to do and use my own bin/tap or whatever.
Were these people friends of yours?
"Were" :laughing:
I think the whole thing is hard to understand if you're not a clothie.
Most of us are converts, its like when you give up smoking..you are the most anti-smoking person ever (kinda hypocritical in a way). I don't use sposies, I don't like sposies, I hate the smell and I hate the thought of it going into ANY of my bins when I make such a huge effort & commitment not to use any. I don't have a problem with people using them (though they don't know what they are missing out on!) but I just really don't want them in my bin (the neigbours yes!....lol)

Don't worry Mamaduke and Kristy - if you ever come to my house you can put your nappies where you want (except on the loungeroom floor) :p

we use sposies, and when we're out visiting i always ask where their outside bin is becos i dont want their kitchen (which is usually where people keep their bins) smelling like poo, and sometimes DD can do some real smelly ones:o :)
as for wrapping it up in a plastic bag and taking it home, (which we've done when i've had to change DD in the car) well, its still ending up in the 'landfill' isnt it, doesnt matter which bin it comes from, if we were your visitors and you said you didnt want us to use your bin, i'd think you were a bit nutty and prob sneak it in your neighbours bin instead:p but i'd still respect your wishes as i do feel that its polite to abide by the hosts wishes when in their home, but yea, i'd still think it was funny.
I know everyone has their own opions but..........
At least they asked first. You didn't say NO, so they probably didn't think you minded. I'm sure if you said NO in the first place, they would have understanded.
I know I'm only new to cloth, but if my friend said I could chuck a nappy in her bin and then got cranky about it I would be confused.

Just curious, if a friend came over and it was that time of the month... are they allowed to put their napkin in your toilet bin or do they have to wrap that and take it home with them as well?
I would always abide by a persons wishes when I am in their home but this kind of thing really strikes me as odd.

Even if the nappy/nappies were placed in the outside bin your bin still stinks. Believe me, being someone who has converted you can really tell the difference.
Maybe we could ask them to clean and sanitise our bins every so often for us :p

That's exactly what I was thinking.
Like you said, only a clothie could understand ;)
Hmmm can't answer that one because a) I don't have a toilet bin and b) because the person probably wouldnt change their sanitary napkin in my lounge room and ask if it was ok to dispose of in my bin

don't like where the sanitary napkin conversation is going though

I see your point, being a convert myself, and ever so proud to have a sposie free bin, I understand your pain. BTW I've never had this problem as all my friends now use mcn cause I went :ecomcity::ecomcity::ecomcity: to them so much! I'd call that success!
But having said that, I'd never say no to someone who asked to put one in my bin. It's really not so bad. It's someone else's waste, not yours, and whether it's in your bin or your neighbours or in the visitor's home bin, it's still contributing to landfill.
So if someone asks, just feel sorry for them and say yes, while wondering why they are using plastic on their babies when soft bamboo/hemp/cotton is so much nicer. (And if you use sposies, I'm not judging you, just pointing out that cloth nappies are softer and less plasticky than sposies. You won't know unless you try them!! :))
If it annoys you so so much, then put a sign on your door stating it is a disposable free house- and then you'll have no problems!! And maybe no visitors who are willing to change their babies if they are in sposies! I can see them all changing their babies in the car on the backseat furtively before knocking on your door!
ps I have a problem with people putting menstrual pads in my bathroom bin, so it's nice to hear some people don't do it! I use a cup so I hate having to empty MY bin with other people's stinky pads or tampons in it. Or even worse, floating tampon wrappers in our toilet!! YUK!!!!
minime in the longeroom! LOL
I use cloth pads too so yes they can take them (any type of pad) home with the nappy.

Some people are very judgemental, and quite upset that we are proud of using cloth!
Like everyone keeps saying...
"Only a clothie would understand....."
(By the way we don't wash our cr@ppy nappies in anyone's laundry trough, we usually take them home in a wetbag! And we tend to wash the poo off in a toilet, FYI!)

It's really sad to see that someone who was simply venting their frustrations (especially in a cloth nappy discussion area) and it's turned into a debate/'how could you say that'/ lets attack the OP for their thoughts thread :shame:
Remind me never to vent out my frustrations ever again on this forum :)

Doesn't anyone else kind of feel eww'd about human waste being disposed of in a kitchen??

I don't smoke, I don't like smoke and therefore they smoke outside.. but I sure as hell don't go getting upset because they put a cigarette butt in my bin.. How just crazy is that???...
.
I dont let people put their butts in my bin actually...they stick too...pooo-eee!
I must be crazy...Im the first to admit it!
Thanks Lauren...its all good though..makes for an interesting read.
I know in myself that I wouldn't actually tell my friends no...but these were merely thoughts running through my head that I wanted to share with my fellow clothies that would understand.
I do however, find it very interesting to hear the other side and what people would think if I actually did send them home with their goods! And how defensive people get...ggeeeez! lol
All good everyone

See the thing is when I hit the 'new posts' icon and a thread comes up entitled "That does NOT go in my bin!!" I don't necessarily look to see what section it is posted in before opening it, I just thought "Good Lord, what went into your bin?" and even if I did notice that it was in the cloth nappy section that wouldn't stop me from opening it...I didn't realise it was only for the 'converted'.
I guess there is a fine line between proud and self righteous...but I'll leave you guys to it...happy pooper scooping...whichever way you do it!
As a semi-clothie (or a clothie-with-no-time-or-energy-to-wash-and-dry) I can't understand the issue... especially those who won't let it touch their wheelie bin.
Are ALL your products recyclable, reusable, biodegradable and naturally sound? If no, then what's the point freaking about about the "pollution" when you're obviously contributing yourself - just in other ways.
And I can't believe you don't have a toilet bin... what do your female guests do at that time of the month?
Honestly, If it's my outside bin I don't really care. All my friends know I am a clothie and if they want and info where to come but I don't feel the right to comment on every aspect of it everytime I see them. (Although I take liberty in parading all the cutest of the stash:D )
Inside bin...different story I guess, but just for the smell factor. Same as I wouldn't leave my nappy bucket under the kitchen sink.

Thing is... how can you be sure the people posting are sposie users or clothie users? ;)
Anyhoo in regards to the landfill issue, I was under the impression that the environmental impact of cloths / sposies was pretty similar. Sposies taking up landfill, clothies using more water etc. I think i read that on the choice website.
When Ava is big enough I plan on using my cloth nappies. For now shes in sposies. I've been looking into those Safeties biodegradable sposies but haven't been able to find prices anywhere online.
I still don't get the segregation when it comes to what nappies people use. I couldn't care less what other mothers use on their babys bottoms.
What Mamaduke said. Hehe

Just wanted to point out that disposables use 2.3 times more water than washing cloth nappies because it actually takes a lot of water to make each disposable nappy.
There's a website that points this out
http://www.rwh.org.au/wellwomens/whic.cfm?doc_id=7691
Just wanted to dispel a myth.
I would be grossed out if someone put a used nappy in my kitchen bin, but I think it is fine to be placed in my wheelie bin. It all goes to the same dump. *shrugs*
As for Me putting feminine hygeine products in someone elses toilet bin.... I just wouldn't do that. Never have and will never feel comfortable to do that. I wrap it and take it home if I have to change. But usually at that time of the month (as my periods are so very heavey) if I do visit someone, I make it a short visit so I don't have to change. The only toilet bin I use(other than ours) is at my Mum's.
I think I would be grossed out if someone put their used tampon or whatever in my toilet bin too:no:

I always take our dirty sposies home with us. I put them in one of those scented plastic bags and tie it on the outside of the nappy bag. I have one friend who always insists that I just put the dirty nappy in her kitchen bin along with her kids nappies, but their bin is in their pantry and it just makes me really uneasy for some reason.
I personally don't care what people do regarding sposies or cloth, but I wouldn't take a dump in someone elses bin so I wouldn't leave my son's dump in their bin either.

2.3L water for sposie manufacturing compared to 1L for a cloth nappy actually in comparison :laughing::laughing::laughing:
Righto, the OP has had her vent and plenty of people have had their say.
In the interests of peace, love and mungbeans, I'm gonna close this one for now.
