Matty is 6mths old on Saturday and is teething and has been on and off for a month now. He was eating some solids like some pumpkin and cereal but now won't have any. I am not to concerned about it as I think his gums must be sore, but the problem is he is obviously hungry as he has started waking me up at 2am for a bottle where previously he was sleeping through the night, so we are back to 5 bottles instead of 4. When his first tooth comes through will he go back to his solids? Should I still offer him solids each day to see if he will take it?
His weight has stayed the same for the last two weeks, he hasn't lost any but it is very frustrating as he can't hold his own rusks etc yet and has no real interest in anything except his bottle, is there anything else I should be doing or could be trying mums out there who have had this happen. I would love a full nights sleep again.
thanking you
tired new mum
Eloise liked to chew on a cold wet face washer when she was teething. She got her first right before 6 months, and it seemed like she was drooling and being cranky for about 2 months prior to that! I'd just give into his demands for now until the tooth comes through - then you'll have a bit of rest!
Hi,
How do you know when your child is teething? Other than the obvious when the tooth cuts through? Is a grizzly baby necessarily teething?
My liitle one (6months) has had a shocking last month - she used to sleep through but the past month started waking continously all night  - many suggested she was teething because of her age - I thought maybe she was too because she was drooling - but she had been drooling since about 4 months of age! then I thought she was because she started to grab my hand to bite down on it - but then this stopped... anyway after doctors tests to check she didn't have a tummy bug and me feeling really run down because of lack of sleep the doctor suggested I try teaching her to sleep on her own. I had previously always rocked her to sleep.
WELL.. its been a week now and although we still battle some hysterics for about 5-10 minutes (15minutes max) her sleeping is back to normal - in fact its improved! She now sleeps through the night and even has decent naps in the day rather than her usual 20min catnaps :) !! I think she was desperately needing sleep and couldn't put herself back to sleep without me... maybe a tooth will appear soon who knows? or maybe this was her way of letting me know she needed more sleep?
If only my little sleeping angel could 'tell' me what she needs, this parenting thing is a real mystery sometimes!!
A much rested mum,
Jessica
Hi Jessica,
What technique did you use to teach your little one to sleep on her own. We have tried controlled crying and it was a complete disaster. I am always on the look out for other ideas to try.
Thanks
Jo
Hi Jo,
We used control crying - I thought it would be a disaster as my little one is an absolute screamer (high pitched hysterics, tears etc) but its been a week now and she's doing quite well, only about 5-10 minutes of crying before she sends herself off to sleep - it wasn't easy, I followed the book "How to help your baby sleep better" by Dr Richard Ferber... it's the only method I know of that works - probably the hardest thing I've ever done but definetly worth the heartache!!!
Let me know how you go,
Jessica

Hi
I know that my Nico is teething as he is biting everything he can get into his mouth - including my arms! And he's been drooling for ages but at just 15 weeks I guess I was in denial.
But I was pretty frazzled last week as he was waking up every 2 hours through the night after previously waking just twice - I thought I needed to feed him more maybe so I called the CHN and told her what was happening and she suggested controlled crying - is he too young to do this and especially considering that it probably is just teething am I best just to ride this phase out?
What should I do?

Hi :)
To all the mums out there awaiting the arrival for their bubs first teeth, please spare a thought for all the mums who wait as long as I did. My son did not get his first tooth until he was 17 months old.
Now he is 23 months and still has only 10 teeth. None of them came through in the order that i was told to expect, and he didn't really seem to be teething at all, but i noticed teeth marks in his sandwich and had a look in his mouth and thats how i discovered his first tooth :D
Hi Nico's mum,
Have a squizz at the CC forum just started for ideas on CC and more importantly for support!! At 15 weeks it seems a little young to start CC, they generally suggest waiting till at least 6 months (or was he 15 weeks when he started biting? how old is he now?) ... as for waiting for teething my CHN says that since they teeth for up to 3 years (as cwsmum has said!!) if you keep waiting you'll be waiting A LONG TIME!!!
I know how stressful lack of sleep can be and I can only sympathise!! CC is the only thing that worked for us!! We tried swaddling - worked great until it got too hot! Rocking in our arms took nearly an hour and she woke soon after anyway!! She wasn't hungry for constant feeds and refused to sleep with us!! Basically she hates sleep!!
Tough decision, post a thread on the CC forum asking other mums how early they started CC?
Good luck, sweet dreams...
Hi,
has anyone ever noticed their baby twisitng their mouth around (looks kind of like pulling funny faces?) when teething?
Still waiting for a tooth..
Still wondering how long teething takes..
Still no idea if she really is teething!

Hi Jessica,
About the little mouth wiggle (almost like she's sucking on her bottom lip), Charlotte's been doing this since she was 3 1/2m. The chemist said it was a way for babies to itch their gums when the were teething. I use this cue to rub some bonjella on her gums if she does it and is whinging.
We're still waiting for that elusive 1st tooth too!!
Wish the Tooth Fairy would come and deliver a tooth soon!
Thanks Vicki,
Still no teeth....
Is Bonjella a cream? Do you find it works? I looked at some today but wasn't sure which to buy.. so many... all say don't use if baby is taking aspirin - Panadol dosen't have asprin does it?

Hi Jessica,
My daughter who is now 9.5 months is just cutting her first two TOP teeth. I thought the bottom ones were meant to come up first, but then I read that teeth can emerge in no particular order.
She was really drooling alot and was a bit cantankarous before the first teeth started to come through.
She had her hands always in her mouth and chewing on things from 4.5 months old and everybody said "oh, she must be teething"......it is normal behaviour for babies to sense things via the mouth as well as touch, smell etc
The other thing I noticed was that a few days before the tooth came through, she had a lot of bowel motions (#2's) and a bright red bottom.
Each baby is different, but just thought I'd let you know some of my babies symptoms. Usually, the gum area around the tooth will bulge and have a bluish tinge as well.
As far as teething relif goes, I've used bonjela and baby panadol, which provided mild relief. But I have come aross a Homeopathic remedy called Hylands Teething Relief and it has helped so much! :) You can buy it from the chemist and they are tablets which dissolve directly on babies tongue so easy to administer. They cost about $12 for 125 tablets. I would recommend to use them once the tooth cut through the gum, just so you can be sure that baby really has a tooth and/or teeth coming through.
Hope this helps...... ;)

Hi Jessica & Lynda,
Bonjella is a clear gel and it tastes a bit like aniseed. It's spose to be a like a mild anaesthetic on your gums. I don't think it has asprin in it though. It seems to work ok. I've also got a natural remedy called Brauer Teething Relief. I haven't used it yet so I'm not sure how it works.
It is a bit tricky trying to work out if they are teething because they DO use their mouths to learn about their environment. Something to do with having more receptors in their mouth than on their fingers at this stage.
I hope we don't have to wait for 9m before the first tooth comes through. I don't know how much longer I can handle those toxic poos!
From Vicki & Charlotte
Eloise has a couple of back teeth coming in at the moment and the Brauers Teething Relief is an absolute godsend! Brilliant stuff. We're on our third big bottle since she started teething. It's a completely natural herbal medicine so you can take it in conjunction with Panadol (paracetamol based) or Nurofen (aspirin based).
As for toxic poos - that stops when the tooth comes through! I always can tell when Eloise has a new tooth coming because apart from the usual drooling and chewing on stuff, she gets bad breath, stinky poos and a little nappy rash - probably from the stinky poo!!

Hi all,
my bub is almost 3mnths and has started grizzling a lot more, drooling and rubbing his gums with his hand and finger. When i feel inside his mouth the bottom gum is raised a little and seems to be sensitive to him. His cheeks are red and rosy which started yesterday, he has not had this before.
Is he teething?
he also has pretty toxic poo, with was mentioned as a teething thing?
peace

Hi everyone,
My 7mth baby girl is teething too. When she has a bad day With her gums i give her a water ice block or an ice cube wrapped in a face washher . This way she gets the coolness from the ice and can bite down on it as well. It seems to do the job during the day. As for waking up during nite for more bottle feeds i dont know what to do . Any ideas?
I posted earlier saying that my son didn't get his first tooth until he was 17 mths old, but because they came thru all over the place i wasn't exactly sure which ones he was getting.
Anyway, I realised today that after he got his front top and bottom teeth, he got his 2yr old molars, at about 18 months old. Since then the gaps in his gums have slowly been filling up with teeth, he now has 10 top teeth, so now gaps there, and 5 bottom teeth, so he looks kinda funny when he smiles :p He just turned 2yrs old :D
My son Dominic (now 5 months) has recently cut two teeth (from 4.5 months) and has decided that sleeping for 8 hours at a time is over rated. I have noticed that the 2 top centre teeth are moving down and for the last week his sleeping has been terrible.
His 'symptoms' for want of a better term started when he was 3.5 months about a month before the first tooth came through. These included wanting to put everything possible in his mouth, rubbing his tongue over his gums, not wanting to feed due to pain but obviously being hungry and not wanting to put himself to sleep during the day on bad days. I also noticed that he had lumps just under his gums that he would not allow me to put any pressure on due to pain or discomfort.
I discovered that the best thing for his grizzly moods and pain was Brauer teething relief which seemed to be gentler on his stomach than panadol. I am not sure if anyone else has tried it but it is better value for money than panadol. We also use bonjella on his gums on bad days.
I was hoping for a break once the first two teeth appeared but it does not seem we are going to be lucky.
I am not sure if others have had similar experiences.
