I am at my wits end - ready to start my 8 month old on formula. He's always been a fussy feeder. Now with teething (he has 4 and 2 on the way) he is even fussier. I have always had too much milk. No - I am not lucky (it is worse than having not enough - I don't feel myself and put up with constant pain).
I feel every feed is a struggle. He is lucky to be on for 2 minutes during the day feeds. The only time I can get good amounts into him is when he is sleepy/aslpeep (morning feed 5am and night feed 7.30pm).
I have mastitis in one breast at the moment and am on antibiotics. I wear cabbage leaves in my bra to help my discomfort. I have started taking 'sage' tablets (last 2 days) to help dry up my milk/to help not produce as much. I would love to keep breast feeding (I don't have to go back to work until he is one) but is taking its toll on my mental and physical health as I have too much.
I was trying to feed him 4-5times per day (milk) as well as solids. He loves water from his cup with straw. I even tried giving him milk from this but he refused it? Do you have any recommendations - am I trying to give him too much anyway? as he often refuses - after many attempts. This is what I've been doing:
*between 4am&5am - wakes: feed from both sides (to ease me) then goes back to sleep.
* 9am - try to feed breast then rice cereal/fruit (does it matter if he has no breast here, just cereal with milk?)
*1pm - try to feed breast then veges and yoghurt
* 5.30 - try to feed breast - then dinner (veges and custard)
* 7.30 - try to relieve both breasts. We "rock" until he is sleepy so he'll feed.
Is this normal? He is normal weight (just over 8kgs) and healthy but doen't enjoy his milk. Am I trying too much? Do you have any suggestions before I wean him off for good and put him just onto formula? I KNOW - HE MAY REFUSE THE FORMULA - BUT I WON'T BE IN SO MUCH PAIN, OR DO I CUT BACK ON BREAST FEEDS DURING THE DAY TO LOWER MY AMOUNT AND SUBSTITUTE WITH FORMULA??????
