View Full Version : Lazy Eye & Not Sitting at 8 months
Hi All
We took DD for her routine 6-8 month check up at CYH yesterday and were referred to the Womens and Childrens Hospital as DD can not sit on her own. I was a little concerned as she can't even sit alone for more than 5 secs but whenever I voiced my concern, other mums always told me she would do it in her own time. Now I am a little worried as we have been referred to a specialist
She seems to be fine in every other way, she can crawl, wave bye bye and say "MUM" ... she just doesnt have a lot of balance yet. Has anybody else encountered this problem with their child?
I was also told she has a lazy eye as she failed a test that the CYH nurse did and am being referred for that too. To be honest, I see nothing wrong with her eyes and I work in the opthalmic/optical industry and see kids with this all the time ...so was surprised she failed this test as her eyes seem ok to me.
DD is almost 8 months old
Any advice would be appreciated if you have encountered these issues before
Thanks!
Kate

My DS did not sit until 10 months unassisted. If we tried to put him in a sitting position, he toppled straight over.
It really will come in time - we were told he was delayed but it was nothing to worry about.

hey there,
my lil sis had a lazy eye. she was referred to a spec and they put a patch on her good eye so that the turned eye would self correct. that was 12 years ago and she hasn't had any problem since. the medical advances in that time would have come in leaps and bounds. with not sitting up on her own at 6-8 months, just relax. it will happen in her own time. ppl were telling me that all the time and they are right. my ds got his first tooth at 3.5 months and has gotten 1-2 every month since. but the books all said that this shoudn't have started until he was 5-6 months. your ds might enjoy laying down, i know i do!!!
just encourage her daily by propping her up with a pillow and slowly add more until she is comfortable to lean away from them.
Hi Kate
About 3 weeks ago, your post could have been written by me - and was actually, I don't know how many threads I posted stressing out about DD not sitting up.
My DD was exactly the same, she could not sit unnassisted for 1 second at 8 months, she's just picked it up a couple of weeks ago when she was past 9 months (about 9 months 2 weeks approx).
I know you'll still probably stress because I did too, despite everyone saying 'don't worry they all develop at their own pace':ecomcity: . The thing is, like my DD, if everything else is on track, that to me is evidence that there's not a major problem, I mean if they had a problem that was preventing them from sitting up, it would have to be a pretty big one that would affect other areas do you think? That's what I kept telling myself anyway. Then all of a sudden, bang, one day a couple of weeks ago, I put her on the floor, took my hands away, and she just sat there. :smiliedance:
I won't say don't worry, but I WILL say try to keep the worry from getting out of control, maybe going to the specialist will be good for you if, for nothing else, than to set your mind at ease?
That's a bit strange about the lazy eye - can't you see them clearly?
Hope this helps!
I just went to my GP for the referral to the hospital. He was really good and tested her sitting abilties in many ways. He said it is possible she could have injured her neck during delivery as she had a traumatic (both for me and bubs!) forceps birth but did not seem to have any real ill effects at the time.
I hope she is OK.
Oh and he said her eyes were fine, the CYH nurse didnt really know what she was doing which does not surprise me!!

Luka couldn't sit for ages either, I honestly can't remember when he started, but it may have been around 10 or 11 months... and even then, he could only sit when propped, he couldn't get himself into the sitting position for another couple of months.
We took him to see a paediatrician, who checked him out and said that he was just at the other end of the development spectrum... nothing at all to worry about.
He is now running :D.
DD has her appt in a few weeks. She still is not sitting. Ive been told it is more of a concern as she CAN crawl and has been rolling since 12 weeks. The physio I spoke to on the phone said she will assess her and may have to refer her to a neurologist so will let you know what happens. I hope she is OK.

Ds 2 is 8mths in two weeks and he cannot sit unattended. I am not worried at all cause to me he is developing normally and I think will take his time compared with Ds2. He tries to sit up from a laying position but can't yet. He doesn't crawl and only started rolling. IMO I think kids develop differently get it checked out though it will put your mind at ease.
