View Full Version : One of the scariest things ever . .

I have shot this in under serious because it could be potentially.

This afternoon was really one of the scariest moments Ive had in my mummy career. Tears included!!

For lunch today after playgroup I thought Id give her some peanut butter on bread. Now I dont want anyone going all off because I gave her peanuts before she was 1. She's had peanuts before in various foods and sauces. Even had tastes of peanut butter on toast and never had a trouble. Anyways, she had taken a few nobbles and basically pulled it apart as she normally does. . then a few mins later I noticed a red mark with a white spot (a hive). She's had the odd one or 2 before but it was always something completely different and faded within 10 mins. That single red white mark today turned into at least 15 I could count around her mouth . .

  I was like. . uh oh. . **** .. so I grbbed a wet washer and wiped her face a little, but then I noticed her eyes were getting a little red and then she started rubbing them, which essentially (Im guessing) spread the peanut butter or something around them . .and they started to get puffy as well. . I rang my mum in a bit of a tiuzzy . . Id seen so many stories about kids having bad reactions. .she was still breathing fine . .nothing dramatic. . she was just annoyed cause she was itchy. . I told her I was gonna go to medical centre around the corner. .hung up. . cried as I grabbed my bag and threw her in the pram and we headed up there.. my heart racing and me trying to stop the tears. .Its only a 5 min walk ( I dont have a car) and went in to see someone immediately. They looked her over and told me I could either go straight to hospital ..or they could give her some medication and we could sit there for a while and watch her. . I chose the later as the hives had starting to go down and she was esentially fine in herself. .just looked bad. .

They gave her some stuff which is essentially prednesone (called predimix or something like that) and we had to sit there for about 45mins. Though quite a few of them were gone when she took the medication it was better to be safe then sorry and she was having a ball at the med centre, ..laughing and squealing and such . .I just sat there looking at her thinking . .you scared me to death you nutball!!

I got home and we headed to my normal GP after dinner. Just to confirm it all and let him know. She has to take the medication for another 2 days. And the medical centre also gave me a referral to the allergy centre at westmead so we can get her tested. I think it might be a good idea.

The doc thinks that it might have just been the fact it was concentrated peanuts or it could have even been something else in the peanut butter. Either way. No more peanut butter for little miss!! Not for a while anyway!!

Alright .. so that was my daily drama . .hopefully no more drama for a while. . dont think my heart could take it!!

oh my goodness... I got stressed trying to read fast so I could get to the end of your story!!! how SCARY!

I"m really really glad that the medical centre was really close for you .. phew!!

and no one can possibly blame you for what happened - if she has been exposed (sauces etc) - the only way to FIND OUT that she has an allergy is to expose her to it (I have been giving my DS small amounts of peanuts to test the water.. )

I just wanted to post lots of :hugs: for you - what a rough day - I can imagine that there were extra hubs before bedtime tonight - after a scare like that you love them soo much more (who would have thought that was possible!!)

:hugs:

How scary!!! The thoughts of peanuts really scares me - there is a history of peanut allergy in hubby's family so the idea of even trying bub with them scares the hell outta me...

But - there is only one way to find out if they're allergic right???

Just a quick note..
Was the peanut butter on the same bread that you normaly have my friend was here the other day and i had no bread so she gave her DD ham on a hot dog bun and she came out all red aswell it wasn't what we put on it it was the BUN that she had a reaction to..
Hope all is well and she gets the all clear from the DR..
Had to laugh at you saying "Now I dont want anyone going all off because I gave her peanuts before she was 1" I gave my DD a taste of peanut sause off my plate when she was about 4 months old..
People always say wait till there over 1 but if there goign to have a reaction there going to have it at 4 months or at 1 years old..
So IMO everyone should know there first aid and CPR and if it happens you are goign to know what to do at any age...

I'm glad everything turned out okay. I guess its true about peanut butter then. DP's brother has this allergy too so I am a bit worried about it.

You poor thing. These babies love to keep us on our toes.

This is the thing about Peanuts... in sauces, foods or peanut butter... there may be no reaction on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th time.... but then bang it hits them!! Its something that builds up and then reacts, not nessasarilly on the first go.

Just something to keep in mind for everyone. It is a serious issue that shoudlnt be taken lightly. As poor Krisseh just found out. :hugs:

Yep it was the same white bread we always have. The peanut butter was the only new thing.

Thank you all so much for the hugs. It was totally freaky. Not something Id want to go thru again esp as the doctor said allergic reactions tend to get worse every time they have them

I think they say wait until a certain age so that the childs immune system is more well equiped to deal with the reaction if there is one.

Sounds like a very scary thing to go through though.

They do say to wait but unforunately they can eat something every day and then one day hve a reaction. Thats the problem with some things.

They could be allergic now and not in 2 years or the other way around.

Its just like a total guessing game :banghead:

We have the same with milk...just don't know when or if they will grow out of it.

And I totally understand how scary this was for you...your post was like reading a story about our night last week when DS1 somehow came into contact with milk product and his lips blew up like he had had botox...that 3 minute drive to the hospital is a lifetime...

I hope all is well now. We are seeing the visiting paediatrician tomorrow to arrange (I HOPE) testing for extent of the allergy.

Food allergies can be terrifying, you poor thing. That sounds like a traumatic day for you. My son has food allergies (he is now 3). He is allergic to milk and all milk products. The good news is that the reaction is now a lot less severe than it used to be......he used to get vomiting and hives, now he just gets ezcema. So hopefully he is outgrowing it. I hope your daughter outgrows hers too as living with an allergy can be hard.

Make sure you avoid all food that even lists a "Trace of nuts" on the ingredients as peanut allergies can be fatal if they go into anaphylactic shock!!! Also get some phenergan or zyrtec or something with antihistemine in it to give to her in case she has a reaction again, it holds off the worse to give you time to get to the hospital......

Oh we go to RPA allergy centre in Sydney every 6 months. They have a long waiting list but they are EXCELLENT and have a great reputation. See if you can get in there for long term care.....its worth the drive (we drive almost 2 hours to get there).

I have a four month old and I am soooooo terrified of starting solids with him....he has a 60% chance of having food allergies as he has a brother who does. SCARY. I won't be giving him peanut butter till he is 5. lol!!! My 3 year old still hasn't had peanut butter. His paed (at RPA) said not yet......give his immune system more of a chance to develop........

Good luck, I really feel for you. Let us know how Westmead goes and feel free to PM me if you want to chat...
