Hi gals,

I was just wondering what I should expect at my first Ob appointment. I am seeing him on Wednesday. I have already met him as he was my gyno for TTC with PCOS. But this is the first time I will see him when I am pregnant.
I have had a 7 week scan done through my GP (who is a public ob) and have done all the blood tests prior to falling pregnant. I would just love to know what he will do? Should DH come with me?
Also when will I have another ultrasound done?
Thanks gals, you are all so great!

He'll check your weight, possibly do a urine test, poke and prod your belly a bit to see where the baby is. Mine also gave me a pap smear ( ) and a breast examination.

He'll take a family medical history and just have a chat about anything you want to regarding the pregnancy. It 's the longest OB appointment you'll have - set aside a good 45 minutes or so for it. The later visits will all be about 10 minutes a go.

I went with DH - had to weigh myself and do urine test and check my protein and glucose levels in the bathroom first, and give results to nurse. Then had long appointment with Dr (must have been at least an hour). She took down EVERYTHING about my complete medical history, looked at all my test results that the GP had ordered, got me to lie down and prodded my tummy, felt my boobs, blood pressure etc. Then just sat and chatted with us for another half an hour - diet, exercise, our travel plans and then we got onto my pathaological fear of birth and she talked to us about that and gave us a pile of reading. She said she would have usually given me an ultrasound, but I had had one two days before, so she just got the results from that. She gave me all my referrals for 10 week blood tests and 12 and 20 week ultrasounds and that was that!

And then I signed my life away with her receptionist, made all my appointments for the next nine months - once a month for a few months, then once a fortnight (after 28 weeks), then once a week (after 36 weeks). We even made 2 appointments for the week after I am due - scary, if it's still in me then I imagine I will be VERY keen to get it out!

All in all a lovely experience - but I was like you - had no idea what to expect.

My OB (private) likes to see his maternity patients between week 8 and 11 for the first appt. I'm going this Friday, will be nearly 10 weeks.

Kyahli: many OBs won't see new patients until they are past their first trimester of pregnancy (the risks of miscarriage being so great at that point). However, there are some that will.

My pregnancy was managed in the first trimester by my GP - he sent me to the blood tests and ultrasounds and such. As they were all fine and there were no complications, I didn't need to see an OB until later on.

So it's really up to you, your GP and your OB when you go for that first visit. If you are older (over 35) or have had complications, sooner is better than later.

I had my first scan at around 8 weeks with my Fertility Specialist just to check on it being a viable pregnancy and if there were one or to in there (i had 2 eggs).
I have my first appointment with the Ob next Tuesday which will be my 10th week (i will be 9 weeks 5 days). They wont do a scan but will give me my referal for my 12 week (or around abouts) scan and NT test. I hope we will get to listen to the heart beat though (we didnt listen but saw it on the screen in the 1st scan)... will they be able to hear it with a doppler at 10 weeks or will it be too faint?

I just got back from my GP, got referral for bloods, took height, weight, blood press, checked my tummy, boobs, also had a papsmear. Chatted about diet, antenatel stuff, hospital visits etc - all in all a worthwile 45mins.

I am booked in for my first scan at 13weeks (only due to hosp availability) I am 10wks going by my lmp. Will my 1st scan determine babys age? (i'm assuming so  ). I hope my dates arent too far off !

Nuchal translucency scan.

It's when they take a measurement of the collection of fluid at the base of the baby's neck during the ultrasound. It's used to assess the risk of Downs Syndrome.
