Has anyone treated their childs eczema without the use of steroid creams? Poor Ozzy has severe eczema on his arm and down one side of his body at the moment and to be honest I have no idea what is causing the flare up either! But I really don't want to use steroids on it. DH has given me 3 days to find something or he will go get the steroids to put on Ozzy:gloomy:

my dd had bad exzema and emu oil worked great. If you try it give it a couple of days before you think it dosn't work. It can look worse for a couple of days but it has worked on everyone i know that has used it so far. you can buy it from health food shops and some bigger pharmacies. Good luck.

Hi - I had some success with the MediHoney Eczema cream on the backs of my DD's legs. It was reasonably priced and all natural.

I tried every alternate therapy I could to ease my bubs eczema (really bad, head to toe from about 8 weeks onwards) nothing worked. So I used the cortisone cream I was prescribed in the first place, and it helped greatly, I wished I had done it sooner and not put my bub through unnecessary discomfort for about 6 weeks because I was scared to use it, I will always feel guilty. Thankfully she has started to grow out of it, but has the occasional flare up and when she does wwe use cortisone which clears it up in 2-3 days.

IMO I would use the cortisone cream, as long as you only use as directed, I dont think it will do any harm whatsoever, it maybe just a one off flare up.

Try not to use any harsh soaps etc. We use QV wash.

Good luck.

The eczema is flaring up on his face (and the rest of his body), which is why is a big reason why I don't want to use a cortisone. I don't think it would be safe to use on a little one's face.;)

He has had flare ups before but usually I can figure out what causes it - but not this time - I am very confused:confused:

Oscar's Mum, I see you're in Brisbane too

I know of a chinese herbalist in Sunnybank that has had some really incredible results treating children's eczema without steriods - I've seen some it if first hand with some children I worked with. I'll find his details if you are interested.

Ren Ji Tang (Daniel) Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Centre
Shop 4, Sunnybank Plaza Shopping Centre Cnr. Mains Rd & McCullough St, Sunnybank, Brisbane, QLD 4109
Australia
Ph: (07) 3344 7388
Fax: (07) 3343 2139

His practice is near the pet store inside the shopping centre.

Be warned, I'm told that his 'bedside manner' is a little abrupt at times. That said, he really does seem to know his stuff. He had absolutely brilliant results with the children I saw, you'd never even know they had any skin troubles at all. I hope he can help you as much.

I swear by the eczema cream and eczema mixture from Dartnell's Pharmacy in Surrey Hills, Vic. They will post. No steroids, no prescription required.

DS's skin is now completely clear, and all I have done differently is use that cream and mixture.

I have tried most of the natural eczema creams. Well I should really say wasted hundreds of dollars on eczema creams. Cortizon creams are the only ones that clear it up for DD. Sorry.

Hey

I'd have to agree here. But for early signs of redness try David Hosking face and body balm.

Just wanted ot add as an adult with eczema, that over the years I have used steroid creams only when necessary and have had no ill results in my 25years.

My best advice is to use the steroid cream on his body and get rid of the nasty flare up . .only a few times. .then head towards the natural. Sometimes you just need that boost to get it taken care of. As for the face. My doctor gave me a special cream for Matilda's face that was a light lighter when she had some eczema.

Ive also used the medi-honey, and calendula plus cream. Both have worked. Make take a few days and a few appliations but they get there. Most health shops have good people in them. Give them an ask!!

I spent a few mths using every possible alternative I could find and nothing would shift DD's either.... I used the cortisone cream for 3 days and its all gone!!

Pip's ezcema is primarily on her face too... I was VERY hesitant to resort to cortisone and made my doc very aware of this.... she let me know it would be the lowest dose possible and that we only needed to use a minimal amount.... as it is topical application it is pretty much harmless..... I was hesitant as my Pop has an inactive adrenal gland due to heavy use of cortisone based drugs (ingested) over his lifetime due to asthma.... she assured me nothing like that would happen!

Other tips.... use no soap or soap alternatives at all.... put oil in his bath (QV, baby oil, etc).... apply sorbolene at every opportunity....

Plenty of wasted $$ here too.... especially considering a $7 tube of cortisone cream, $2 pump pack of sorbolene and $2 bottle of baby oil is all we use to keep it under control now.... :banghead:

Yup I would second that. We tried everything that was suggested to us and nothing, absoloutely nothing worked...Percy's skin was so bad at 4 months old that even the cortisone cream that you can get over the counter would not work. He ended up with a big skin infection, losing 100g in weight (despite eating like a horse) and not sleeping AT ALL for 3 nights straight (i could go on!).

We finally got to see a dermatologist who prescibed a stronger steroid and told me that I could use a very thin layer on his face to clear it up enough to avoid infection recurring. (I would only do this under medical advice, as all kids and conditions are different.) But if you can get referred to a dermatologist (paediatric if poss) then do so.

I felt terrible that I had not been more insistant on being listened to when I said that the eczema was not clearing.

BUT now his skin is clear unless he is ill or has teeth coming through. As the Dermatologist said - 'for the small amount of steroid use you have to employ to be rid of the eczema, I really don't see why you would not want to use it to clear up this"( ref to awful, awful itchy painful skin!)

Good luck. I know it is heartbreaking to watch them suffer...but sometimes we have to accept that the meds are not as 'evil' as we think.

I have used David Hosking's cream and it wasn't too bad - although have to say I rather use a steriod cream that will fix the problem within a few days (if that) then go through weeks of another product before seeing a difference..... I don't use steriod cream for any long term use and I suffer from eczema myself - and I used it during my pregnancy much to a lot of people's disgust but I was in such pain and agony from the itching, redness, weeping skin etc that I had to.... I had 2 OB's say as long as it wasn't for long term use it was fine.

The product I used from David Hosking was the Hypoallergenic Face and Body Balm and it helped a lot with my facial eczema - the only reason why I bought his product (after giving up on so many other products) was because he offered a money back guarantee. He posts his products as well and wasn't too expensive so thought I would give it a go.

I think Lanolin aggrevates a part of my eczema but it's in his balm.

Jojojonsey- Where do you get that cream Medihoney eczema cream?
My SIL's little boy has it so bad that he has been in and out of hospital cause he has infections. They have been prescribed every steriod cream on the market and nothing works anymore she is desperate.

We tried sorbolene and baby oil as suggested by the doctor, right before we decided it was time to take her to hospital. It caused the eczema spread like wild fire.

Sometimes things with fragrance can make it worse, so always check the label.

My little one has it really bad, its horrible but its mainly in her joints and her ankles etc arms elbows on the inside and its a horrible dry crust from as well if that makes sense but red and irritated in other spots.
I had to use cortisone to stop it but the best thing i got told to use was chux cloths!!

Once i managed to ease it a little my peadiatrician told me to smear a layer of paw paw cream over it, then put on a wet chux dishcloth over it and wrap it lightly in a bandage. Honestly it worked and cleared it up in a few days here was my little princess in heaven and it removed the dry crust.
I find now if its starting to flare up i do this and it clears it before it starts, however some extreme cases i have had to use cortisone to give it that kick to stop it.

This is what worked for me and was the most painless and natural method

Oh i only wrapped it at night too as it was good to air it i was told during the day!

Yes we had to use cold compress bandages as well. DD hated it. Arms, legs and trunk. She screamed and screamed and I cried, it was horrible.

Is she a deep sleeper?

There is no way DD would have slept through that!! She wakes up if I creep into her room when she is asleep!

I found that not a lot would work for us that wasn't prescribed by the Doc, the one cream that did work wonders for us and had a flareup under control quickly was the prescription ointment Elidel it's a non-steroid cream. Otherwise we used to heavily moisturise and then wrap in a chux cloth.

Since arriving in Sweden though, my daughter has not had 1 flareup in 16 months. Her skin is dry and needs to be constantly moisturised but no itchyness what so ever. My son on the other hand developed his eczema when we arrived here.

We don't use soap on the kids they are washed using Aqueous lotion and moisturised with Aqueous cream. And they both only get a bath or shower every second day.

Once the flareup is under control just try to keep his skin constantly moisturised.

Good luck with it. It can be tough trying to keep it under control sometimes.

Sorry, just read that Elidel is not used on kids under 2.

She will sleep through anything! I guess with having older siblings who dont know what quiet means she has learnt to sleep we do have our moments though on a hot night we will have a restless one occassionally which is normal or if shes not well
I am lucky i can put her clothes away etc anything in her room providing i dont turn a bright light on she will usually sleep through anything apart from any big bangs or sudden noises
However when shes got the Eczema shes not a happy girl :)
Wish my other two slept like her

Hi! I read the mail about your son's eczema and I right away thought about the line of Dead Sea products some of my friends use in Israel. I think it's even possible to order on-line. Anyway, I posted the website link down below so that you can check it. Oh, and about steroids, they only use natural products. Good luck!

My DD has had eczema pretty much since she was a few weeks old. I tried sorbolene, Coconut Silk and a few other natural eczema creams from the chemist.

She got really bad all over her body and face so I took her to a dermatologist and he gave me Sigmacort (steroid) and I put it on that morning. By that night I could already see an improvement.

He actually said to me that people will tell you not to use steroids but just to ignore them and use them when needed. They will not harm the baby.

DD was a lot more settled after I started using the steroid cream and wouldnt wake up scratching and irritable.

I have since taken her to an allergist and the cause of the eczema was a nut and egg allergy. I have since cut out nuts and eggs from my diet (I'm BFeeding her) and only use the steroid maybe once a week if she has a patch of eczema in her arm creases.

Now I use Hamilton Bath Oil in her bath, then QV cream all over her body to lock in moisture. Dermeze is also very good for extra dry spots.

The DR prescribed this for DS a week ago, and in that week the eczema has nearly cleared up! Fantastic stuff .

We wash him in QV and use Alpha Keri Moisturing Cream after wards.
