Hi everyone,

Just thought I would ask everyone what they cant eat while pregnant.

I have been told from all different people that you can't eat the following:

Soft cheese
BBQ Chickens
Deli meats

But what about yoghurt and peanut butter - I'm craving peanut butter & honey sandwiches but unsure if we can eat it when pregnant?

What do you think? What else have you heard that you can't eat?

you can't eat any good stuff lol

nah JK

umm non pastorised cheeses or milk,
honey is debatable, some say no to that and some say its alright,
anything that comes from a deli is a no no, like ham and other meat,
pre made salads that have dressings on them,
anything that has been cooked and then sat around for a while,
umm can't think of anymore right now, haveing a mind blank lol

peanut butter should be fine, like the honey some say its not good cause it may cause allergies in the baby, but then again some people live on it

I stay away from most things, just about anything that i didn't cook i don't eat, unless it is at someone elses house, i also don't eat leftovers but thats just me, leftovers are normally fine as long as you heat them to at least 75degrees

i hadn't heard that about honey? rarely eat it anyway!
yoghurt is fine. i ate it nearly every day as i am lactose intolerant and needed more calcium.

i've avoided:
cold meats and seafood
soft cheeses (am HANGING for it!)
soft serve/thickshake kinda things
bbq chicken unless i knew it was really fresh
pre-made salads with dressing
sushi

Oh yes pre made salads I didnt think about that, but of course - it's deli stuff.

Well I keep well away from the deli and soft serve ice-cream/thickshakes.

But will double check with the dr about peanut and honey - I don't think I could live without it.

I to think green tea is fine in moderation but I think you can only have two cups of coffee.

But actually can you still eat normal ice cream you buy at the supermarket? I do know soft serve is a no no.

I didn't hear anything about honey or peanut butter and have been eating both!

I would steer clear of green tea as some research shows it can block your absorption of folic acid. I guess a cup now and then would be ok but I would rather not take the risk, especially in the first trimester.

yeah normal ice cream is fine, its pastorised

anything pastorised is, like sour cream, and cream cheese, only thing with thoes cheese's and cream, is that you should chuck it out if its been open for a couple of days, i'm really anal with food and never have anything left over lol, and if there is then i won't eat it the next day

peanut butter is actually generally recommended! What to Expect When YOu're Expecting has it in its diet.

My Ob just told me to use my common sense - even ham and things should be ok if they come from a place you know is fresh and it comes stright off the bone (ie, there is a place at my market where I see it coming in in the morning, and I know it's cut fresh all day, stored well and generally gone within the day!).

Better safe than sorry of course with most places I reckon - i wouldn't be eating deli meats or salads or anything from any general sandwhich place.

If you read enough you will find almost everything in the world will be on some list of other as recommended to not eat - ie, also fresh juices, anything where you don't know how the vegies are stored (so cutting out even sandwhichs with vegies from a sandwhich shop!). I find lots of the american websites are the WORST for scaremongering and banning everything!

Each to their own of course - I reckon read as much as you can, talk to your doctor and make up your own mind about what suits you.

WELL SAID  I agree 100% look hard enough and you will find anything on the 'banned' list!

hi everyone.
I am a vegetarian, i have some milk occasionally in teas and my once a day coffee, dont eat eggs, cheeses are an occasion once a month thing with me and it has to be good quality with non animal rennet(cows intestines).

i made an amazing dinner last night of a vege lasagne bake, with lots of spinach and a little feta!! it was so so so yummi!!!!! (rest of family isnt vege and they all enjoyed it!!

just wondering about tofu, soy cheses, and soy yoghurts and things like that too??? i always cook things good, but can they be harmful to growing bub?

i just like making my own meals, (apart form me craving hot chips at the moment!) so i would just be careful of premade foods, as others have said, you dont know how long that the food has been sitting there!!!!

Kyahli Im a vegetarian also (but I eat dairy products) and I am still eating Tofu and drink Soy Milk.

I cook my own stirfrys with Tofu in them and just last night we had take away Thai food and I had a wok-tossed meal with Tofu in it. Just when we got it home I zapped it in the microwave a bit more to make sure it was extra hot just incase! ;)

I have been craving cheesecake which of course ya cant eat! I am sure Peanut butter is fine and I have been eating that alot...
I didnt hear that ya cant have roast chickens? I know that ya shouldnt eat pre-cooked chicken from Red Rooster or Coles or whatever, is that what you girls are talking about? Its a pity coz I love Red Rooster chicken!
I also am a BIG coke drinker but ya not really allowed to have coke or coffee are ya?
My Doc told me that youghurt is fine when I was preg with DS so I have tried to eat some of that this time but I have to say I am a bit off youghurt.
Actually the food issue is stressing me out a little coz there is so much they say you shouldnt eat so ya get to the point where ya going "Well what can I eat??".

A friend of mine told me that ya can eat most hot food (or leftovers) as long as ya heat it up really well just before ya eat it, is that true? Coz that is what I have been doing....

no cheesecake??! Why not? Philly is completely pasteurized so shouldn't be any problem with cheesecake?! As long as it doesn't have raw eggs in it, should be aok. Well, unless you are dousing it in alcohol or drugs or something?!!

Re coke and coffee - as long as it's in small doses, should be fine too.

Just read around and talk to your Dr - I reckon try not to listen to everyone's opinion or you'd be going very hungry!
