Hi,

Im booked into the Logan Hospital to have my 3rd baby. Never been there before. Had previous 2 at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton Victoria. (14 and 11 yrs ago). Yesterday we had our maternity ward tour and i was shocked at how small the birthing rooms are. I felt very closetrofobic (not sure if that is correct spelling). But anyway, it was very suffocating. Couldn't swing a cat in there.. Are all hospitals in Brisbane like this?? I have seen Dandenong Hospital in Vic and Monash (of course) and both have very decent size rooms, big enough to move around freely in labour and they even have windows, and Dandenong has balconies so you can get fresh air. At Logan there isnt even a window!! I only have 6 weeks to go and seriously thinking of an alternative hospital. Can anyone tell me if other hospitals around Brisbane are the same?

Please HELP!!

I went to the logan hospital. The midwife that delivered gwen was wonderful until after she was born and I had complications. The doctors I had were horrible, excluding 1. The Dr that actually dealt with my problems after gwen was born and took me into surgery was horrible. She had no bedside manner, she was cruel, and she could hardly speak english. Im sure not all the Dr's there are like that, but the ones I had certainly were. A couple of the nurses during the day were very nice, any of the night staff nurses I dealt with were less the pleasant. Im not having another baby, but if i did, I wouldnt be going back to the logan.

The birthing room however was quite large, and had a large shower attatched. Hope that helped :):)

You hear good and bad about all hospitals. I've heard some shocking stories about the maternity wards of Logan, but my Dad was there for several months after a stroke (in a different ward, obviously ;)) and the nursing staff there were wonderful. Yet I went to Logan late one Friday night having a miscarriage and they told me the couldn't do anything and to just go see my GP in the morning!

They probably do tours, maybe you could go down and check the place out for yourself?

If you live in Logan, your alternative public hospitals for deliveries are Redlands Hospital or the Mater Mothers Public, both of which will be further away. You can make enquiries and do a tour of each and then decide.
I've heard good and bad about Logan (& have even worked in Logan maternity myself), but remember, after the Mater Mothers, they have the second highest number of deliveries in Qld.

I have BAD experiences from Logan, not personally, but have heard really bad things. But heard nothing about the maternity ward at all, so cant judge so much. I dont think the rate of deliveries is because there are a lot of people in the area that dont know you can go to other hospitals or dont haev transport etc. I would be going anywhere else i could. But like i said i haven't heard anything about the maternity ward, so not sure if you want to take this on board or not.

I was a hombirth transfer, so I was only in there for 3 hours or so, but it was 'OK' nothing to write home about, that's for sure!!

I was in a cubicle with a curtain partition, so could clearly hear another woman screaming in labour beside me, not sure if this is standard or not, next birth was at home, and so will this one be...

I would love to have a home birth but a bit scared too as my last 2 births were not exactly "straight forward". I had emergency c section with my DD and 36 hr labour resulting in forceps delivery with DS. That was 11 yrs ago, so not sure if an age gap like that would mean it would be like me having your first all over again.

I had my two children at logan and Im currently booked in to have my 3rd there. Im actually quite suprized to hear some bad things about them I never had any problems with them. My first child I had when I was really young and my midwife was wonderful and non judgmental I did have a few nurse's in the ward that treated me as if I was a little girl but you get crabby people everywhere you go. With my second I had Postpartum heamorahage and had to be taking to theatre for a curettge. The staff in there were great very reasuring they even went out of there way to fetch me a pair of socks as my feet were freezing. The only time I ever had trouble was when I was recovering in the ward I had some hard *** nurse's and some really great ones. I think it depends on the person.

I think all the bad things that people have heard are because everyone wants to hear the bad things and remembers the bad things. Thats not just in this circumstance but with every aspect of life.

I'm sorry, but that really offended me. You dont know the circumstances from other peoples experience so please try not to 'dumb it down' so to speak. Altho my experiences werent in the maternity ward, but in the general and mental wards. The original post was asking opinoins of everyone and that is what i gave, it is NOT up to you to tell me that i am just hearing/remembering the bad things. You have NO idea.

A friend of mine was in the psychiatric ward there... I think that why I dislike the place so much. The whole building just has bad vibes for me.

You must be a very touchy person if YOU took THAT personally. I am speaking in general if 1 person hears a bad thing then everyone hears the bad things havnt you ever heard of chinese whispers of course I dont have any idea what went through and I wasnt asking you I was simply giving MY opinion on MY expirence there which is something that I ACTUALLY had I didnt give an opinion on it based on the opinions I had heard from others and I wasnt trying to put down or tell other people that their opinions were wrong or less magnify the problems that they have had. I posted my expirence and then what I felt was true in the sense of not only this circumstance but in life. Most of the posts on this have been hear say I have ackoweldge the fact that some people actually had bad expirences there but I wasnt even talking about that.. Maybe you need to relax.

I'll add my other logan hospital experiences...Hope this thread doesnt turn nasty:eek:

I had surgery on my feet twice, The dr was very nice that did the surgery, It was just outpatients so I didnt have to deal with any nurses but recovery nurses. From what I remember I had no problems.

When gwen was in hospital in october for a server case of croup and a closed wind pipe, most of the staff was good. The pead's in emergency were good, the nurses in emergency were lovely. My only real beef was I had a naked baby on oxygen and adrenilin who was sent to xray twice, and was sat in an extremely cold corridor for half an hour, only to be sent back for more medication because xray took too long, But i guess thats not really anyones fault, they obviously just had a patient that took a long time. I think it just could have been handled better.

Once she'd been admitted to the paediatric ward, most of the nurses we're ok. I dont think they had a very nice bedside manner, espically when dealing with sick scared little babies. The night time nurses we're pretty bad actually. I wasnt allowed to hold her in the chair next to the bed if she was upset, because I may fall asleep with her in my arms. They woke the poor kid up every hour to check her pulse, after her not sleeping properly for 2 days, when the day staff managed to do the same thing by leaving her sleep and stucking the thing on her ear.

I dont understand why these horrible nurses choose to take a job working with sick little kids, or why the become nurses at all? They obviously dont want to be working there, dealing with sick kids. They're rude, uncaring, cold, and uncompassionate.

As I said, My maternity ward experiences - Horrible. I'd never go back.

Peadiatric ward - Pead's nice, Day nurses most we're good, Night time nurses, Cold and rude.

Leeny I found that with the peads dept too.

G was only just 3weeks when admitted for RSV, Pneumonia and bronculitus - he ended up getting gastro from a nurse who didnt wash properly. He was in an isolation room, but they put another patient in there. He got such bad nappy rash from no one changing over night (i was also quite sick and stayed home at night to rest), that he was soaked through 6 layers. I found some nurses to be quite incompediant, and the fact that they were over 2 hours late for meds one night is inexcuseable.

My materinty experience wasnt bad - but i did get my own room, and i did have to change obs near the end of my pregnancy cause one was a rude ar$e...

When gwen couldnt breath, they had her on adrenilin and steriods and they kept forgetting to give her the steriods, and when they did, the choked the poor kid with the bit that they did get in her mouth, and I'd have to say that over half of it ended up down her chest and on the bed .

The nurses there really need to wake up..Dont deal with kidlets if your not a caring compassionate person:no:

My Daughter had to go there when she was 4, She broke her collar bone and they treated her really well except for the wait to see a doctor. And when my son had a really High temperature I saw the bulk bill doctor there in about 20 mins after arriving he sent me down to xray to see if my son had pnemonia turns out that he didnt and he gave him a panadol suppositry to bring his temp down and we were out of the hospital and home again in 2 hrs. I definetly agree with nurse's that work in the industry that are not nice. It is their job to reasure patients I guess its like that with nearly every Job though sometimes you get really nice people and sometimes you get really horrible people. Sometimes you get really nice patients and sometimes you get really horrible patients but there is definetly no excuse for incomptence and ignorence

Their paediatric ward is very small and only equiped to deal with minor ailments, if its serious then they will send the child to the Mater Childrens. Personally I would skip the middle man and go straight to the Mater Childrens with my child anyway.
