I was just wondering whether anyone has there special needs children in childcare? How do they cope and how are the staff?

TIA

Hi maddysmum, my sister works in childcare and she has had children with special needs and the centre specifically hired a trained professional to help with them. I can get her to log on tomorrow and give you more information if you like.

Sorry my sis is having trouble with her login but she asked me to tell you the following. But as you are in a different State it could be different.

Do you already have someone that comes to you to assess your baby and if so they can arrange for a Special Needs officer to go to a centre of your choosing.

If not then you need to call Dept of Communities and Families and they will help you to find a centre and help you with getting a officer.

My Ds was in Childcare from 4 weeks old, when he was diagnosed with Autism at age 3, the child care center he was in organised for some people from community services to come in and talk to the staff, I found all of them of them treated DS with respect and love the same as any of the other children (what I wanted). What they did do was mediate between me and Community services to organise speech therapy for Marcel (at the center)and any other therapy that they considered was needed...

It also really helped Marcel Socially,, He is now attending a mainstream school.. Child care was what he needed socially to get where he is today.

My ds is autistic and attends day care 2 days a week, plus goes to 3 yr old kinder and he loves it , his carer is lovely and does signing and communicates well with her, family day care is your best bet
