As it is going to take me a while to build up my collection of mcn I think I will start using the terry flats I already have in the meantime. I have a couple of questions...........
what is the best type of cover to use? Are my options - wool, pul or fleece? If I use wool where is a good place to get them/patterns to make them?
can i use any old polar fleece to line them? This will wick the wee away right? and make poo easier to remove?
The only fold I know is the kite, which is fine, but was wondering if there was something better?
thanks!!

you can use any cover that you would on mcn on flats too...PUL, fleece and wool. Wool is best i reckon especially for night, but i also love my tots bots and BB PUL over my flats and they keep everything in IYKWIM.
With folds have a look at

and as for liners, i think micro fleece is best as it is thinner? but im not 100% on that one.

I just use the ole kite fold, when I use flats. And I prefer wool covers - there are free patterns around, I think if you go to nappycino there are some free patterns on there.
I do use polar fleece liners when I put flats on him. Other options for liners (I don't have any of these but apparently they work wonderfully, and are great for bubs with sensitive skin that may be affected by the fleece) raw silk, and suedecloth. Sounds nice doesn't it :D !! I wouldn't mind knickers made from raw silk!!
PUL or fleece are also great, if you get good brands then they'll work brilliantly. I prefer wool covers, but have some PUL. I love the MotherEase airflow PUL covers, also the TotsBots PUL and fleece covers. And then I have a heap of shorties and soakers :D
Alice soaker (http://grapevine.net.au/~bluegum/freesoaker.html) I knitted this and had 8 flats when I started bub out on cloth several months ago.
I prefer wool covers and have quite a few. Soakers, shorties and longies!

What shape should yo cut microfleece liners if you have a newborn and are using totbots? Triangles? Rectangles/Squares?
Also what shape with flats?
Do you need a liner during the day or just at night?
most common is a rectangle, i think, for whatever nappy you use, or some people prefer an hourglass shape.
to be controversial.. ;)
you don't really *need* a liner at all, you could just change the nappy when bub wees in it ;)
however, many people use a liner all the time, or use nappies that have fleece or suedecloth inners so that bub gets the 'stay dry' feel and can 'last' in the same nappy until it is very wet/full.
it's totally a personal choice thing.
I chose to EC and change the nappy if it got wet, so initially I was going through 20+ nappies a day. (I wasn't very good at EC to start with, lol!) He did have a dry bum though, which is what I was aiming for! And the number of nappies used did decrease ;)
