Cooper’s Birth Story

Ok warning as this may be long and boring for some people lol. On the 31 of January 07 (me being 35 week pregnant) I went to my usual Ob’s appointment in the morning with Rob (DH). As I was told I had gestational diabetes at 28 weeks I just was an Obstetrician not the midwives, I also had to see the Endocrine clinic for my GD. Anyhow the appointment seem to go fine, and as Rob had the whole day off from work we decided to get a few things done like banking and baby shopping lol. Buy about 2:30pm we were both stuffed and want to go home. At home around 3:00pm I got a phone from one of the Midwives at the Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital. She said to me that my hemoglobin was very low and if I could come in for another check up. I said yes that’s fine, when would you like me to come in. (Me thinking in a few days even next week.) She said now would be good if you can. So while Rob was home I thought might as well get it over and done with. We arrived back at the hospital; at about 4pm and we were told to present at the Birth Suite. While sitting in the BS’s waiting room I heard a woman screaming (obviously she was giving birth). Then about 5 minutes later I heard a baby crying. I didn’t fancy the screaming bit at all  lol. Anyway A middie called me into an examination room and did my blood pressure and stuff like that and put me on a CTG to check the baby’s heart rate. Bub’s heart rate kept around 130 – 140 bpm but would occasionally drop down to 104. The middies weren’t concerned about it but when an OB was it she wanted another CTG to be down in about 2 hours. So that was at about 8pm. Lucky I set the tape recorder to tape Neighbours and Home & away lol. A different Ob came in to see me and she was really nice. Yes told me that they wanted to give me a blood transfusion, as she was really concerned about my hemoglobin. So I said that is fine. They decided to send me up to the maternity ward. On the way up there a middie was escorting us and she said to me did I bring a overnight bag. And I said no I was only told to come up for a check up. Anyway once on the ward I was told they were admitting me. I didn’t want this as I was scared to stay in there with out Rob (yes silly I know). But I didn’t have much choice. At about 8pm I asked Rob to go home and get me some clothes and things I might need, and to also tape Medium hehe. So I only thought I would be there overnight I was wrong! For 4 days they kept me in hospital. They kept putting CTG on me morning and night as bub’s heart rate kept dropping, and then my blood pressure was up a little bit. So then ended up giving me 2 units of blood but then took it out again for blood tests  . They also gave me 2 steroid needles incase they wanted to deliver the baby. So by Monday I was fed up with everything. They couldn’t tell me why my Iron was so low and why bub’s heart rate would drop as they didn’t know themselves. So I said if you’re not going to do anything else I’m going home. So the Ob said to me okay you ca go home but I’ll check in with you at your next Ob’s appointment which was in 2 days.

So 2 days pass by and I’m at the hospital again on the (7 of Feb), and a different Ob calls me in this time. And she does all the usual (check BP and do the dobbler thingy). The she tells me to wait outside as she wants to consult with another OB. So while Rob and I are waiting, Another Doc I’m assuming for the gestational diabetes calls me in and then the Ob from when I stayed in hospital came around and said my hemoglobin was still very low and she wanted to admit me again for another blood transfusion. I absolutely did not want to stay there again as last time during the night one of the middies yelled at me for snoring lol. Anyway I really had to stay so they told be to go back up to the Birth Suite and so a middie took me up there and put me in a room and put the CTG on me again. About an hour later the Ob came and saw me and said that if we waited here till this afternoon she would definitely have a plan for me. So about 5 hours later we were waiting in the waiting room and she called us back in and she sat us down and said, well we want you to be admitted again and have another blood transfusion again and on Friday 9 of Feb we want you to have a baby :smiliedance: . She then said we want to do a caesarean as they were too concerned about putting to much stress on the baby. I was happy to have a caesarean as I didn’t fancy a natural birth as I thought it would hurt too much. Obviously I had know idea of the pain of a caesarean  lol. So I was admitted again and I made Rob go home and pack my hospital bag again this time not only for me but for our baby. So Thursday the next day I had my 2 units of blood again and they said I had a further 2 units in case I needed them after the caesarean. Rob got the TV on for me and if you paid an extra $4 a day you got foxtel. I swear if got it put on for him as I was too excited to watch TV as I was about to meet my baby. But I was bored and watch Maternity Ward on discovery. Wasn’t really a good idea as most of the births were caesarean and all the babies had problemsL. Anyway that day couldn’t have gone slow enough lol. Finally Friday come around our baby’s birthday. So I was all prepped and ready to go. At about 9:30 a wards man came to get Rob and I and took us back down to the birth suite. We went in to the Operating section and wait in a big room till about 11:30am. Finally another wards man came and wheeled me in to the anesthetist room for my epidural. By the time the anesthetist messed about and they had to put another cannula in. They gave me a local before they did the epidural and I didn’t feel a thing. About 10-15 mins later they put ice on my neck (which I cold feel) and they said if you can feel the coldness of the ice on your belly tell us. I couldn’t feel any cold just I new something was on my stomach. Finally they wheeled me into the theater but they made Rob stay outside until the blind thingy was up. That took about 5 – 10 mins. When Rob came in he was able to sit up at my head. So they started the operation and I could tell they cut me open but obviously not feel any pain. Rob said he could see what was happening in the light thingys so I looked up and I said yeah I can see it to then they put the sheet higher so I couldn’t see it lol. I can’t remember how long it tool but I could hear out baby crying and the surgeon lifted our little boy up so we could see him and Rob took some photos. As he was 4 weeks early they had a pediatrician on stand by in case bub had trouble breathing and we were warned he may need to stay in the Nursery. But our baby was given the all clear and Rob went over and cut the cord and the pediatrician took photos for us. Bub was then wrapped up and brought over and they put him on me. One nurse said do you want to give him a kiss and I didn’t want to cos he had stuff all on this face, but I couldn’t say no so I had too lol. Anyway I started to feel them doing something in my stomach and it started to get painful. So they had to stop and they topped me up with something else or more of the epidural I’m not too sure, and it made me really tired cos I could hear myself snoring lol. Rob was then taken out with the baby and apparently it took about 45minutes to fix me up. I remember being put on to another bed and being wheeled out to recovery where Rob and our baby was and nurses were. They asked me if I wanted to breast feed and I said yes and they must have done it for me cos I can’t remember doing it lol. After I threw up a few time and being very itch (I’m assuming that was from the epidural) they wheeled me back to the ward. But at the elevators, saw my BIL as he is a wards man at the hospital and he came over and hand bubs head. I remember breast feeding there so I hope he didn’t see my boob’s lol. Back up at the ward my Sister was waiting for me. So she was the 3rd person to see and hold bub and I very happy about that.

I think I just slept on and off for the next 24 hours and rob and the nurses held breastfeed for me and he also needed top up’s of formula. On the Saturday I was able to have a shower and I decided to bottle feed, which made it so much easier. I stayed in hospital for 5 days and was glad to go home.
