Hi there

Just after some advice.

We are heading to Tasmania on the ferry and from Devonport driving down to Hobart. We're looking at around 17 - 18 hours from departure to destination. Ronan will be almost 4 months old when we go.

How on earth do I organise his feeding?? Do I just take 6 or 7 bottles containing boiled water and take the powder separately and mix prior to each feed? (The water doesn't need to be kept at a certain temperature does it?) Does anyone know if it is possible to buy small bottles of distilled water and use that instead?? Seems it would be much easier. I'm using Avent bottles if that helps.

The ferry has virtually nothing in the way of facilities for babies. The best they could offer was the bar staff warming a bottle in the microwave - not very helpful.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Roddy

Hi Roddy, I think having the bottles pre-filled with boiled water and putting the formula in before each feed would probably be the easiest.

We flew from central QLD to Launceston then had a 2 hr drive with DD when she was 4 months old, and that was the easiest for us!

Good luck

Hi Roddy, I drove from Brisbane to Townsville earlier in the year (14 hour trip) when my ds was 3 months old.

What I did was filled all the bottles with boiling water and kept them in thermal pouches. If you keep the formula seperate then it doesn't matter what temperature the water is at. Temps only matter if the milk is already made up. The heat lasts pretty well but I also got a travel bottle warmer that plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car. I never used it though as my ds is fine with taking bottles that aren't that hot. You could buy distilled water if you want but then you'd have to store twice as much as you've got the babies bottles PLUS bottled water. I think that would just be a bit of double handling.

Good luck.

We travelled up north in our car (it was around 12/13 hours straight through) when DS was 5 months old and I had prefilled his bottles with the cool boiled water but also had a thermos of hot water to just top them up to the right amount and temperature (I had the bottles at the correct amount, then tipped out the excess when it was at the right temp. I also prescooped out the formula (as I do every day) into the travel containers and just added it when needed per bottle.

We had bought a bottle warmer, but in the end it was just as easy to top it up with the thermos of hot water - a lot quicker too as when DS wants a bottle, he wants it NOW!

I use the microwave to heat up his bottles daily too - just make sure I shake it well - which I need to do anyway as I heat the water then add formula. No hot spots then.

Good luck - I was plesantly surprised how good the trip actually was (there & back) - with a 5 month old and 6 y/o ... no squabbles, grumpiness, arguments etc ... made a change

I too used a thermos. I put boiled hot water in the thermos and cooled water in another. I just adjusted the right temp between the two waters and had the formula pre scooped in containers. And hey presto perfectly warmed bottle ready to go.
