I am getting a little bit concerned about the amount of wet nappies that DS is going through in a day. Today he has only used 3 nappies (that includes the one he is wearing). He is 9 months old, would you consider this normal?

Hi Oscar's Mum,

I don't have any medical advice but for comparison my 9.5 mth old DS would fully wet about 4 - 5 (including one with a #2 ). He is still on 4 bottles (800ml) and drinks about two full Tommee Tippee cups of water a day.

I don't think it is anything to worry about if Oscar is having all milk feeds and some other liquids (juice or water) throughout the day.

Maybe like adults, some bubs need to go more (or less) than others. :)

Don't stress, just ask yourself these questions...
*Has it been hot where you live?
*How many bottles is he having a day?
*How long has it been like that?
If it has been hot where you live he may be getting alittle dehydrated, try offering water throughout the day to keep his fluid levels up.
If you are still concerned ask your baby nurse or your gp, they'd be more than happy to help you out.
Good luck! :D

Yes it is a little hot here. Not that hot though.

He is breastfed and I am demand feeding, I also pop him on the breast throughout the day without him asking for it, but he dosn't really seem interested in drinking when I do.

As for water, he will drink maybe 30mls of water with a feed, but no other time. I have tried offering juice today but he hasn't wanted that either, so maybe he just isn't thirsty, but I just thought that they were meant to have around 6 wet nappies a day.

I guess I will have to take him to the GP tomorrow and see what they say.

Hi Oscar's Mum,

Just wondering how you went at GP? I am interested to know if there is a minimum number we should be looking out for.

Thanks

Thanks for asking about it Shelbyville.

Apparently 4 wet nappies in 24 hours is not great, but not in need of medical attention, less than 4 get to the hospital ASAP.

I was told to really really push water and the breast everytime he looked at me pretty much.

He is back to his normal 8 nappies a day now, thank god.

Thanks Oscar's Mum

I was thinking about your post all weekend, and I will be keeping a closer eye on DS's "output".

It is so hot here today (on the Gold Coast), I have been shoving the water cup into his mouth at ever opportunity!

Glad Oscar is back to normal. :)

If your babe is fully breastfed (not formula or solids) you shouldn't need to offer any other liquid other than breastmilk. By offering other things (like water or juice) you will affect your supply because bub isn't stimulating production of more milk to quench his/her thirst.

Oscar is on solids, so I really did have to try and push other fluid not just the breast.

Today's saga, he had only 1 wet nappy in 12 hours, so off to the hospital we go with me trying to shove water down his throat the whole way there, and anyway we get there and have to wait so I chuck him on the boob and he drinks.

By the time the Dr saw him he was only slightly dehydrated and they said the best way to test for dehydration is

The baby is lethargic
The fontanelle is dipping alot
When you press lightly on babes chest does the colour come back within 2 seconds
the tongue should be moist (if not this is one of the 1st signs)
has less than 4 wet nappies in 24 hours

There was a few other ways to tell but I think I tuned out once I found out that DS was getting alot better.

The hospital was really nice though and said they were glad that I came in and that I wasn't over reacting especially in this type of weather.

How do you rate a wet nappy ? Is it a disposable or cloth ? And how wet is wet ?

I change Ry immediately if #2 (generally twice per day) plus probably 3 wet ones but not fully wet IYKWIM.

He drinks about 900mls of milk per day and about 300 of water plus his solids.

Now you've got me worried !

Sorry I am not meaning to worry you.

I use cloth nappies so they are really easy to tell when they are wet. I class wet as one wee in the nappy. I have made a habit lately not to put a waterproof cover over the nappies to ensure that I know ASAP when the nappy is wet.

I don't really know about disposables though, but if anyone does know the answer to how many disposables are normal to go through a day, please let us know. And also how wet the disposable is meant to be?
