Eliza has had a slight squint in her left eye since she was born, it only happens when she is tired. We do lots of eye exercises, could do more I think actually :o

I am in two minds about booking an appt for the DR 1. because it doesn't happen everyday
2. I have heard it can correct on it's own

Has anyone else had a child with a squint and if so what did you do?

TIA

My DD, had surgery at 7 months of age because he squint was pretty bad (Both eyes, but left worse). I was told not to worry about patching her eyes after the surgery and checked again at her six week check up. Iv'e noticed for a few weeks now though that her left eye is turing in alot atm, could it be due to growth spurts ? Im not sure if i should make an appt with her surgeon/Dr. as we had our last check up beginning of Feb 07, what do you think?
DD is now 17 months.

O had the same thing Pix. I went to an eye doctor and they said there was nothing wrong with him, his eyes were fine. I think if it's only happening sometimes it's not really an issue. At nearly 3 there's no squint whatsoever. If it worries you get it checked, otherwise I wouldn't stress too much.:)

DS has an occasional wandering left eye. We've seen a specialist about it and they said there's a 50/50 chance of outgrowing it, but surgery may be an option later down the road.

Recently hear of something called vision therapy or behavioral optometry. Don't know much about it but I do want to look into that further before the topic of surgery comes up again, as I've read that a lot of children who have the surgery end up having multiple.

We're actually going back to the specialist soon to ask about an eye patch, as we've noticed that DS always gets 'the wonky eye' when watching TV. They wear the eye patch on the good eye to encourage the weak eye to work more. So we'd do that just when he's watching TV.

As others have said, I don't think they really worry about it when it's only occasional, but we want to do something about it before he gets to school.

I had the same problem when i was younger,as did my mother(it's hereditary) So i know a fair bit about the surgery part of it. i woke up one morning aged 4 and my eyes had just turned in, three weeks later i had surgery. And have only ever needed the one. They do say sometimes but very rarely a second one is needed but that is usually as a teen, as your hormones can send things out of whack so to speak not to mention the growth spurts. I had to do the vision therapy after my surgery too and eye patching the strong eye. The one thing my mum was adamant about was not putting me in glasses, as this sends the message to your brain that your eyes dont have to work as hard so they deteriorate(sp) over time.

My eldest and youngest both suffer from squints. It is herediatry fromtheir fathers side of the family. With my eldest he had to have the Good Eye patched to try to the get the strength up inthe bad eye. Anyway in the end he needed glasses and he had to have an Operation in Jan 2001 to correct his squint. He has had no further problems. Now with my youngest little boy he goes cross eyed really badly and he is currently on a waiting list to get his eyes assessed. If you are really concerned go to your loca; GP and they will be able to write you out a lletter to take to your nearest Hospital to get the Squint assessed. Good Luck.
