hey all ...

a little advice???

Jack and I will be visiting mum on Saturday - he will be almost 3 weeks old.. and if it is hot... the whole family may go swimming..

is 3 weeks too young to take in the pool??? he LOVES his baths (kicks around with a bizarre look on his face :D) - and I want him to love the pool too...

if I DO take him in with me... what can I put on his tooshie???? being a bfed bubs... his poos are a little too scary to let loose in the pool!!! and once allowed out would be terribly hard to contain!!!! do huggies etc make anything small enough???? should I just keep his terry nappy on???

HHHHEEEEELLLPPP!!!!!

Hi

You shoudl be able to get some Huggies Lil Swimmers - they are disposable nappies specially for the pool. I'm pretty sure they come small enough for a newborn. Very handy and easy to take off afterwards, they just rip down the side seams.

If he's anything like my bub, you won't be able to take him OUT of the pool - Andrew is definitely a water baby!

The huggies swimmers start from about 7kg, but i had my boy in them when he was 6kg. You can also get "flipper nappies" from target, best and less etc. I got kailen a pair in 00 when he was "little" cos he started swimming lessons at 11 weeks old.
And for anyone who uses the huggies, you can put them thru the washing machine and reuse them a few times, as long as they haven't poopied them. :D

Jen I would think 3 weeks is to young. you need to consider not just the water temp but also the air (you did say if it's hot) but also the wind. I haven’t got my books handy as I leant them. There might be some information on the AUST Swim site

http://www.austswimqld.com.au/mambo/

Water temp is about 32degrees. Baby's loose body temp a lot quicker than adults as well. depending on the water and air temp for that age baby 5 to 10 mins might be suitable. I have read lots of debates from around the world on sites and I decided not to. hygiene is a big thing too.

hope you all have fun :)

I'm sure it would be ok as it is a family pool...
I have been told to hold off on taking my daughter to a public swimming pool until she has had her 2 mth immunisations.
I have also noticed Huggies Little Swimmers only start at 7kg+...Don't they think newborns go in pools? lol

I learnt to swim before I was 6 months old - my parents plopped me straight in the pool after I left the tummy basically! As long as you care for your baby before and after you go swimming (ie. keep an eye on temperatures) I don't know what would be wrong with that?

I'd suggest if its really hot, buy a little splash pool that you can sit in with your child - then you don't get the chlorine in the water that you would at the public pools. Also its better cos you dont have to worry as much about poo-related accidents - you'll be at home so you won't be scaring pool patrons with little "floaties" going by. :D

Just remember to empty the pool after use (water safety).

Swimming is really theraputic and although at this stage your child won't really be picking up any Thorpie-like techniques, your child WILL be getting used to the water at an early age and this will make the transition to water when they get older and learn to swim easier.
