Don't you hate the little creatures, just saw DS1 scratching and thought I should check.....aaaggghhh there they were....so out came the clippers a number 2 for him and 2 doses of nit treatment (you could see all the little creatures dead in the bath tub so I guess that was a good sign that the treatment was working) and now washing washing washing AAAGGGHHH :banghead:

i certainly cant stand the little critters. dd1 brought them home from school one day, and all of us ended up getting them, lucky we got them before there were too many eggs.
but its a hassle to wash everything again and again, and re- treat after a week or so.
your lucky you were able to shave his head :D

When I was younger I found treating nits to be a repetive process.
The only thing that worked for my sister and I.
(My mum's hairdresser had told us so).
To wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo, then, absolutely drench your hair in conditioner. (it give the strands of hair the silkiest effect), leave it in overnight, then use the 'metal comb', the plastic ones don't work properly, comb through the hair, and continue the process for a few days, if hair is still itchy, keep doing it.
It was the only way we got rid of it.
One of my friend's mother put kerosine all through out her hair! She spent the whole night with her head in the toilet but it worked. (btw- don't even recommend this... ).
Check behind ears, check their clothing, and if you can buy a bunch of those cheap shower caps, cover their pillow cases with three or more pillow cases, change them every morning or night. Make sure they're always on a fresh new pair of sheets. When washed, wash with hot water, and if white, bleech them, hang them out in the sun all day. There's also a special spray you can buy that can help keep the knits away during the day. Some of the scents of those shampoos are horrid! Also, most teachers ask you to leave your kids at home if they're carrying them, so this is a good time to treat the hair.
i dont think washing does anything at all since they die once they leave the human head. i think just retreating is all you need to do to get rid of them.

thats an old fashioned thing to get rid of nits and lice....i remember mum telling me about when she was forced to have it done by the white mission manager when back in them days they had to live on aboriginal missions. she hated it, it got in her eyes and burnt.

Yep, the fumes are sooooo strong. (She's aboriginal too btw, Coincidental!).
I guess it works, but it's just a horrible aftermath. I'm pretty sure it ruins the hair too.

I used KP24 on both their hair TWICE....I find it the best thing to kill them. BUT isn't there some sort of natural spray you can make up to spray in their hair everyday to keep them from getting there in the first place????
Oh the joys of schooling

Yes... add a drop of olive oil, conditioner, lavender and tea tree oil to a small spray bottle of water... spray every day (also used to kill them when you have an "infestation") The best method is conditioner and a comb, usinf chemicals can build a resitance (if only I could convince DD's dad, she wouldn't have them for months on end.) Another new method coming through is to use the hairdryer once the hair is drenched with conditioner - it dries out the eggs, then they blow away.
Good luck.
I've used and recommend the NADS NIT WIT natural stuff for killing the nits, but afterwards, you still need to put the conditioner on and thoroughly comb through to get all the eggs. We've used HEAPS of different treatments, and the nads, with the conditioner after is what I have found works best every time for us.
I have also heard that drying the kids hair with the hairdryer helps to kill the EGGS as they dont like the heat.

we just use ordinary dishwashing liquid diluted with water - just like you would when you wash the dishes. no need for conditioner and expensive treatments. the eggs swell up with the soapy water and are really easy to comb out. just use a little bit on their hair so the soap doesn't run off the hair and into their eyes. leave for about 5 minutes and wash out. - lovely shiny clean hair.
but you do need to do it at least once a week and wash all combs, brushes, hair ties, towels and bedding (at least pillowcases) as well as treating their hair or it is pointless to even treat their hair. cut the hair as short as possible for boys and keep girls hair braided or tied up when they are at school or kindy to help prevent re-infestation. nits can jump up to 2 metres from one head to another.
also nits prefer clean hair as it is easier for them to hang on to. if you have really bad problems with getting rid of them use styling products like hair wax or the old fashioned bryl cream

Hairdresser told me once just use plain conidtioner, they cant stick to the roots. The nit treatments dont kill them, it just stuns them and they will come back to life. We have a hairesser up here on the coast that has started her own business of going to peoples places and getting them out (WHat a job:barf: ) She pretty expensive about $40 per head, but havent seen her for a while, maybe she went out of business??
