View Full Version : Flouride in Pregnancy

Hi everyone

I am based in Brissy and took my DS to the dentist last week as he bumped his front tooth and it is now a little grey. Anyway it is all good but the dentist said that the kids should really be taking a flouride supplement as we live somewhere where they do not add flouride to the water. Anways both kids are now on flouride supplements because we have a really bad history of dental issues on both sides of the family (genetic rather than maintenance).

What I found most interesting is that the Dentist said that I should have been taking flouride tablets from 20 weeks with the baby that I am expecting (and very overdue with) as this is when the babies teeth starts forming in their gums as it helps to produce strong healthy milk teeth.

I just wondered if anyone else who does no live in an area where there is flouride in the water has every been told the same thing or who regularly take flouride to help with their unborn childs teeth.

hey there...I am not use because I am a bit "anti fluoride" lol...we even use no fluoride toothpaste....but, I just realised you have the same postcode as me:D

Hi, that is very interesting. I am giving my boy fluoride for the same reasons as you: I have awful teeth and I was never given fluoride as a child and would hate to regret it later for my boy. But I have never heard anytghing about taking it in pregnancy. Very interesting. I wonder if anyone else has.

My DD has flouride every day (as per our dentist's recommendation) and we use a low flouride toothpaste for brushing daily.

I am pregnant but have never heard about me taking flouride, will definitely ask my GP/Ob about it.

My DH grew up in a place that had flouride in the drinking water and at age 30 he got his 1st and only filling, whereas I have had loads of dental work - obviously its not just a flouride issue, there is probably some genetic component but I guess as long as you don't give your child too much flouride, as that causes mottling of the teeth.
