Hi there,
I want to make a birthday cake for my daughters 2nd birthday, but am no whiz kid by any means in the kitchen - I cant remember the last time I actually made a cake ??? Can anyone give me some ideas for a fool proof cake I can make - sponge chocolate...anything,....whatever is easy !
Also, any decroating ideas ? I am thinking of a cut out 2 shape...but how on earth do you do that ?? I know I am supposed to know these things now that i am a mummy :) but any tips would be helpful ??
Many thanks

Hi
You can buy a vanilla slab cake from the Sara Lee factory for $15 and its already iced. Then you buy an image for $5 and stick it on the cake, cover the rest of the cake with 100s & 1000s and its done.

I'm not a whiz with cakes either. I cheated and bought an un-iced chocolate sponge slab from our local bakery for $20, cut out 2 shapes (i've so far done a teddy, a butterfly, and a big pink heart), layered them, and iced. Easy peasy really!
Tip for your number 2: Draw it onto paper first, then cut out and lay over your slab and cut around it (if you choose that option), makes it so much easier than doing freehand straight on the cake.

If you want a cheats way of doing a cake everyone will eat, get the greens butter cake mix and use 2 or 3 in a baking dish...it takes a bit longer than normal, so I put it on for the recommended time then keep checking every 5 mins till it's done. Should take about an hour, and it is beautiful...
Will be big enough to cut a 2 out of, or you can do what I often do and make the number out of smarties on the top. You can buy the pics from the supermarket, and I actually fit a 9 in smarties on the cake next to it for my sons b'day.
Have fun:D .

Try making a buttercake mix Put into pattypans or cupcake cases. Cook & then set them up on a board in a squiggly line in the shape of a catterpiller. Ice with diff colours & put lollies or sprinkles on top.

I love cooking but I'm useless with cakes! But I managed to put together one for DD's birthday.
I greased a pyrex pudding bowl and just used a Cadbury packet cake mix.
Then when it was cooked I turned it upside down, made a small hole in the highest part and stuck a plastic dolly in, iced it and it can be decorated with smarties, marshmallows anything you like. And it was easy too.
