What age did your bubba start drinking from a straw cup?
The mag mag ones say from 8 months but I look at Cobes and wonder how he'd even know what to do with a straw lol Every now and then I cut a normal straw in half and pop it in his water and hold it so he can try and drink of out if but he just bites it LOL

I don't expect him to be able to drink from a straw now btw (he is only 7 months) but it would just be nice to see what is the general age.... and the best way to encourage it?

my dd was drinking out of her straw cup at 5 mths! she never had a sippy cup, she just went straight onto a straw! the mag mag one was the best!

I only just bought one last week for DS and he's 15 months old. Before that he's been using a sippy cup since 6 months old.

I haven't tried a straw yet either, my sister said they taught my niece with a popper, cause you can squeeze it and then they realise that's where the drink comes from, then she started to suck. She just gave her the occasional baby popper to learn how.

DD1 got it straight away at about 6 months, she had one of them before a sippy cup.

DD2 has only just now figured it out (at 18 months), and i must admit, it's so much easier top be able to buy a popper or something if you get stuck while out, and them be able to drink out of it! And now she can drink fruit milkshakes i make, before she couldn't! :yelclap: (silly to get excited about huh? :o :D)

She has a normal cheapo ones from Coles, and the mag mag one, both good!

Oooh - is it something I should be pushing for? I tried DS with a sippy cup and he just turned it upside down and gummed at it. It's one of those Heinz Baby Basics ones and frankly I'm not surprised he couldn't work it out - I had to suck really quite hard from it to get any water to come out. Would a straw cup be a better investment?

Rosebaby - some bubs can't quite get the straw cup thing.. but it's worth a shot I guess! :)

As far as sippys goes, Cobey has great success with the Pigeon MagMag soft spout :)

Am I doing the right thing, giving Cobey a short normal straw or should I just grab him a proper straw cup to have as a play (so he can throw it around)

When Jett drinks out of a straw i just cut a normal straw in half and use a plastic cup, and its working good, i just have to keep and eye on him.

Rhianna has a straw drink bottle (from coles I think??) that she loves  It's excellent I highly reccomend it- doesn't leak and she picked up how to use it really quickly

Only bought it about 2 weeks ago though, so she was 9 months ;)

I spent a small, No...large fortune on sippy cups, straw cups and any old other cups for DD. She has only mastered a straw cup but still tips it up a la sippy cup style. I never thought of the popper idea of teaching. Good thinking.

i'm yet to buy a straw cup although DS has been drinking from straws and regular cups from 10-11 months. i'm gonna go buy one soon, probably today or sometime during the week. i wanna get him the one with the snack cup attached to it. if you have seen them you would know what i am talking about.

rosebaby, i second Nikki's recommendations about the MagMag soft spout! This is the only sippy cup i could get Charlee to use at first, it is just a soft spout with a cross cut in the top, so very easy to drink out of, but pretty leak-proof too! Then you can just move up to the straw top when they're ready for it!

sw33tn3ss, i am going to get one of those ones too....very handy for about and about, being able to put a few snacks in the bottom . I hadn't gotten one before 'cos she wouldn't drink out of them...but i might get one for DD1 now too!

DD used a straw cup from about 11 months I think. I didn't try it earlier... I didn't even try it when we learnt she could do it - she just stole her dad's milkshake and started sucking away.

My little miss has been able to drink out of the Heinz Baby Basic sippy cup since she was about 4.5 mths old. She wouldnt drink out of a bottle so we tried this and its been awesome. She easily drinks out of it without a trouble.

She was 9 mths old ebfore she could drink out of a bottle . .and I spent a fortunate also.

But back on subject. . Matilda can now drink from a straw. I never taught her. .just happened to let her have it one day cause she wanted some of my drink and she did it .. without a worry . .its a handy thing to have!! She was 10 mths at the time

DS has been drinking out of straw cup since about 5.5-6 months! he loves it!! YOu can pick up cheap straw cups from reject shops and $2 shops! I spent a fortune on cups of all sorts and he prefers the $2 ones to the $14 ones!

thats the same sort I have for kai and he tends to just chew on it instead of trying to suck anything out lol.. I tried it aswell and it is pretty hard to get anything out of it so I'm going to have a look at some different ones on friday

Well.. I just bought Cobey some pear juice poppers.. to see how he'd go (couldn't find any dinkee straw cups at the $2 stores and the only one that bi-lo had was a huge one)
Anway, all it took was for me to squeeze it once for him to start sucking the juice down! WOOHOOO! :D :smiliedance:

well i bought the straw cup i said i was gonna buy (the one with the snack part) and its really good.

DS really like it and i can put his snacks in it also when we go out. it was the cheapest they had at woolies (besides the take n toss sort) but they say for ages 3+ but DS is going good with it.

its called the tommee tippee snack n sip.

The best way to encourage sucking through a straw has been to buy the little bubs juice boxes. Because you can give them a bit of a squeeze to get the drink flowing it is easy for a bub to get the idea.

I've been training DS to drink through a straw because he hates spouts and teats, and needs to have his EBM when I go back to work.

Once they start usung a normal straw it is better to cut it short so there is less dead space before the drink comes up IYKWIM.
