Yep, you read right. We have found out why MJ has been so off the last week. She has Rubella (German Measles) So my intuition that there was a problem was right unfortunately.
I took her to the Drs today to get a 3rd opinion as I knew something was not right with her. Its been a week since her shots & she's still unwell. So I took her up & when we lifted her shirt to listen to her chest noticed the rash appearing :( THe dr said it looks like a viral rash but yeah, it could be Rubella. We left the Drs and went to a chemist who usually know more anyway IMHO and he confirmed it. Asked if there were any other symptoms & i said she's been sensative to light, off her food, screaming, swollen glands etc. All signs apparently.
Can anyone give me any first hand information (not links) on it. No-one I know has had it or if they have its been years & they cant remember anything.
Thanks
RB

Anyone???
Also, she's been waking through the night for the last few days which she hasnt done in months & wont settle unless I bf her. Should i just do it until she gets better?
RB
Sorry i don't have any experience with german measels, but it's good that you now have an answer for what was wrong with your precious dd.
With the night waking I know that when Sienna isn't feeling well she wakes more often and needs comforting. I would let MJ feed, things will probably go back to normal when she is feeling herself again.

I haven't had a bub with Rubella but I had it myself about 6 years ago and it was quite painful.
All glands swelled up (even on the back of my head  ), couldn't eat, would literally stay awake for hours - couldn't sleep at all. I just stayed in a dark room for a bit over a week before I joined the world again.
The good news is, once the rash develops, you're a few days into it so on the road to recovery. I'd be b/feeding her as often as she needs it - keep her fluids up wherever possible. Also, many cuddles etc. Her sleeping may be disturbed for a couple of weeks until she gets back into routine. Oh...and stay away from pregnant ladies ! Even after I had Rubella, my immunity wasn't high enough so I had the immunisation as well.
Good Luck and cuddles to the poor little princess.... ;)

I'm afraid that I probably won't be much help, but I have had German Measles but I was about 7 at the time. I did'nt really have any symptoms except the rash. The whole of my family got them except my mum & my brother (who were immunised). My brother was only a few months old at the time so it was lucky that they had started immunsing against rubella. My dad & older brother were very sick with it, i think. Flu like symptoms that went away after about 10 days.
Sorry I couldn't help more!
Good luck & I hope MJ is feeling better soon!

Oh RB!
I am so glad that they have found something but what a horrible thing to get!
I don't have any experience with Rubella but like any sick bub you just have to ride it through - means you are an on call nurse now 24 x 7 but bubs will be wanting lots of comfort and security at the moment.
So, dim the lights - hey make it romantic for yourself and use candles haha! :p
I'm sending you all a hug - I am waiting for Tayla to come out with chicken pox thanks to DP have a severe case so I will be in your position soon unless she has my immunity to it.
Hang in there, it will all soon be over......................

Hi
My DS had the German measles about a month ago. He was very unsettled for about a week. The rash lasted five days. The doctor said there was nothing to give him besides panadol and nurofen. They say their joints are really achy when they have the german measles and it really hurts. Alot of cuddles and attention. The rash was really bad on the second day. He had it on his face, torso and back. He never got the rash on his legs or arms. Hope your DD is feeling better soon
Hi
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply ...
Both of my kids had rubella last year and apart from a rash and being a bit irritable, they were fine. I had no need to give them panadol or anything as they didn't get a fever that was high enough to need treatment. (mind you, I prefer to strip them off and give tepid baths before giving any medication) I just kept them home for almost 2 weeks to avoid being in contact with unimmunised children and pregnant ladies and then sent the back to playgroups, preschool etc.
They have no lasting effects from it and really, just sailed through. The biggest fuss was made by some health official who rang and started reading me the riot act for neither of my children being immunised ... it took a while for him to stop and take a breath, and when he did, I read him the riot act for not asking if there was a valid reason before attacking me! Both of my kids had adverse reactions to their immunisations and I had subsequently delayed getting them ... he shut up after I told him that! Rubella is a reportable disease - has anyone spoken to you about it from the health dept?

I've never known anyone who had measles. It must be more common over there. I'm so sorry her shots made her sick. (((Hugs))) I think the others have given you all the advice I could think of. Since your breastmilk is filled with antibodies, it's probably the best thing in the world for her. (((hugs))) I hope she feels better soon.

Nope. Now the hospital cant decide if it IS Rubella or a viral infection  I'm just keeping her away from other bubs for a couple of weeks. Nothing more I can do. Doesnt help that the MMR immunisation isnt given till 12months.

RB ... big hugs for both you and MJ ... I hope that all is well soon!
The only way they can tell without a doubt that it is Rubella is to do a blood test, but in all honesty, I wouldn't put my bub through it ... having had to hold both of my kids down for blood tests, it is something I will only do now if absolutely necessary!
It doesn't effect the immunisation at all if she has had it ... Bella and Dan have both recently had their mmr (late, yes I know) and neither of them had any ill effects.
Sounds like you are doing the absolute best for MJ, keep being such a fantastic Mum!

Hi sorry i havent got too much to add but hopefully your bubs is feeling a bit better. I had Rubella as a child & was sensitive to light & had a horrid rash but overall i recovered quite well with no dramas.
What Kyra said is correct that the only way they can tell if it really is Rubella is to do a blood test thats due to the rash being very similar to many other infections etc. I wouldnt do the blood tests unless absolutely necessary, if bubs is just a little off keep her comforted & if she wants more feeds i would do that too keep her happy but if it worsens then i would ponder the testing.
Also they dont do the MMR vaccine as it wont actually work if want for better word on such a young child.
I wish you the best & hope the little one gets better soon :)

Hi all. MJ is feeling alot better now, thanks for asking. She's eating, sleeping & leaving my arms again :p Having so much fun on the floor, rolling everywhere, even getting up on hands & knees & rocking  As we speak she's attacking me & trying to help me type
I think it was just a virus as the rash went within 48hrs.
Thanks so much for your concern :)

Awesome !
Good to see she is doing well & that it must only have been a silly virus trying to scare mummy ! ;)
Hey! Glad she is feeling better now:) It could have been that roseola virus. Millar had that at about the same age. Lasted about two days when we were away camping, we thought it was measles.
