My waters originally broke in the early hours of valentines day, about 1.30am. We called Monash Medical and was told to come in for a check. On the drive there, contractions were about 6 minutes apart and i excitedly thought this was the real thing. If not i was booked for an induction 2 days later.

We arrived there and i was checked out. To my disappointment my contractions stopped and we were sent home after being on a CTG for 45 minutes.

The next days dragged on. Finally at 330 am on the Friday morning, contractions started again. I was going into Monash that morning anyway for an induction so we decided to wait it out a bit before heading in. My contractions were about 5 minutes apart. After a shower and some breakfast (which turned out to be a bad idea about 30 minutes later, as i threw it all up) we finally headed off knowing that DP and i would soon be holding our little bubba.

Arrived at Monash at about 645am and was asked by the midwife to wait in a birthing suite before things were started. At 730 my new midwife Alex came in and started to prepare me for the induction. I also had to have antibiotics as my waters had now been broken for over 48 hours. I was then hooked up to a CTG to monitor bubs heartbeat. The syntocinon drip was started at 830am and the contractions instantly intensified to a stage where they were one on top of the other, i wasnt getting a break in between them at all. The decision was made to turn the synto drip down a bit until they evened out.

At about 11am, during a contraction, bubs heartbeat dropped to 50 bpm. I told Alex what happened as it took some time for the heartbeat to recover after the contraction. Doctors were called in and i was told that the baby was probably sitting on the cord and i needed to roll over to my side for a bit so the baby would move off and would allow the heart rate to recover. I figured they knew what they were talking about and did so.

From that point contractions were ridiculously painful and i asked for the gas. The synto drip was also turned back up at the doctors advice. I had to get out of the bed, i could no longer stand lying down on my back and taking it. I moved to the chair near by and stood up for every contraction. It seemed to be, besides the gas, the only way i could make the contractions bearable (if there is such a thing). I was checked to see how dilated i was at about midday and was told i was 8cms dilated, everyone was totally surprised at this and we assumed that i'd be having the baby sooner rather than later.

For the next 3 hours bubs heart rate kept dropping with contractions but was recovering quickly enough after them that the doctors didnt stress too much about it. The doctor did, however do an internal to place a monitor on the babys head.

By 3pm i started to get the urge to push but due to the issue that the baby was having with the heartbeat and the doctor not thinking i would be fully dilated i was told that i would wait another hour and try not to push when the urge came along.

I was reassessed at 4pm as the baby was taking longer and longer to recover after contractions and they were starting to worry that she was going into distress. Another internal was performed to find that i was fully dilated but the baby had turned posterior. I was told that i could now push, but i had to get her out sooner rather than later.

I pushed for a good 30 minutes, i was starting to get distressed myself from the amount of pain i was in, i was back on the bed and it was very hard to bear. The gas was now doing nothing for me except sucking on the hose thing was helping me control my breathing through contractions.

At 430 i was reassessed again and was told that they needed to take me into theatre as i wasnt progressing and she was stuck so they wanted to try the forceps to get her out and if that didnt work the only choice left was to do an emergency c section. I screamed at the doctor to take me to theatre now and get her out. I didnt care how i just wanted her to be safe.

5pm finally came around and i was in theatre. After an epidural i was happy to lie back and let them do what they needed to to get me my baby. After trying and failing with the forceps the decision was made to do the c section.

At 517 Cassidy Elise was finally bought into the world. She didnt cry at all and was rushed to the corner of the room for a bit of resus but thankfully after a bit of a traumatic birth she is fine and scored 8 and 9 on the apgars. She weighed in at 7lb 10 and has a lovely crop of dark brown hair.

Its not the birth i wanted, but even though i am slightly disappointed and to an extent feel as though i have failed a bit, i am glad that i have a healthy little girl and cant remember what life was like without her. A big thanks to the lovely staff at MMC, my DP and Dps sister who was my other support person. Couldnt have done it without them.
