My 9 wk old has had diarohhea for two wks now and the dr said maybe he has a lactose intolerance and try him on a soy formula. After reading on the net they say that maybe a hypo allergernic one may be better. So i dont know what to go and buy. I was thinking about trying my son on a HA AR formula before i saw the dr but didnt. What do you use? i have been using s26 AR

My DS1 would throw up for hours if he had any of the normal formulas. I tried lactose free, soy, goats and th only one that was OK was the Nan HA. It turns out that DS1 had a cows milk protein intolerance. Th Nan HA has been partially hydrolysed so it can be easily digested and not as hard on bubs gut. I would highly recommend it!!!

Just thought I would point out that with lactose intolerence you can still breastfeed your baby you don't have to swap to a formula if you don't want to.

No it is neither. It is still cows milk based but it has been broken down first ( not sure exactly how??) so it isn't as harsh on their guts. Actually I think the Karicare HA AR is the same thing but is a thickened formula too.

Sorry I can't remember all the details - it was a few years ago now  maybe ask your ECHN, she may know more.

Sometimes at the chemist you can buy sample packs so you don't have to buy a whole tin. Might be worth looking at.

Goodluck :)

Oh rachel. I know how u feel. My son has a lactose allergy too. He is breast fed but now he has started solids i find it soo hard to find lactose free things for him to eat. I tried to buy soy yoghurt the other day but all the brands i found had sooo much added sugar. Ive given up and now make hin breasmilk custard. Good luck with ur bub.

What does the HA stand for? When I last used formula, they only had regular, soy, goat and reflux formulas.

And what are the gold ones?

I think the HA stands for Hypo Allergenic. As for the new Gold I have the tin so I will quote it;

"Karicare Gold Plus Formulas now contain Nutricia Prebiotics. Your baby won't notice a change in taste of the formula. However, Nutricia Prebiotics assist digestion, and act like fibre. So you may notice your baby's bowel movemnts become easier. This means softer, looser more regular stools. Just how nature intended"

In other words, keeps them regular

LF - is lactose free. They are based on caesin which is derived from cow's milk. There is NO lactose in this formula at all. Lactose is the sugars found naturally in milks. Lactose intolerance occurs when the sugars can't be digested properly because of a lack of enzymes in the gut.
HA formulas contain lactose BUT the lactose has been partially broken down to make them easier to digest. There are good for bubs with sensitive tums and immune systems.
AR means the formula is thickened which helps bubs that suffer from reflux.
Goats Milk formulas still contain lactose but doesn't contain the cows' milk protein that some bubs are allergic to. NB an allergy is different to an intolerance. Allergic reactions can be very serious. It can show as something little like a rash or could be a shortness of breathe to full anaphalixis. That's where goats milk comes into play. But as I mentioned is still contains lactose but a smaller amount than normal formulas
Can't tell you much about soy other than it is a soy based milk but there has been recent links to the use of excessive amounts of soy and cancer. So I would hate to comment on soy t present as I don't know enough about it.

By the way - I only know this as I have had 3 bubs. One was fully breastfed till 1yr old, the next was lactose intolerant and had reflux. And my latest little man is lactose intolerant also. Both my DS2 & DS3 were pretty reactive to lactose and couldn't even tolerate the lactose in my breastmilk.

Hope this info helps.

thanks everyone for that. I bought ds karicare HA AR today and since having that he has not had diarrohea so far so good. He had a bowel motion still not perfect but a lot firmer than it was and definetly not runny. So :fingerscrossed: we have found something that will make him better

Sounds like my youngest .... try soy (you can get a trial from EC nurses or a chemist.) but also talk to the EC nurse about the nappy. Colour smell etc. They re the best to comment.

I got hospitalised with dehydration due to NOT talking to someone earlier about the consistancy.

Soy formula is safe enough. The links to excessive soy and cancer is if a child HAS cancer and has excessive soy it MAY cause it to spread. If there is no cancer present the soy MAY help build up immune system to fight isoff. There was also a tentative link to hypothyriodism which has been quashed.

There are the good and bad advocates for ALL formula's regardless of what you decide on. There will always be someone telling you "you SHOULD ...... !!" whether you breast feed or try diff formula's your baby will tolerate what your baby WILL tolerate. It's a matter of finding that THING.

My kids couldn't BF because they couldn't tolerate my milk (having dairy allergies) so the eldest two were on soy for all their young lives (6wks - 3yrs) and are now only just starting on milk. My baby however is on Prescription formula and will be until she is 2 because that is all she can drink.

The best advice I can give you though is to say it takes 2.5-3 days for the body to re-adjust to the new food and tolerate or not. If you try Soy and he seems better, keep an eye on him for three days before deciding your on a winner. After 2.5 days the nappies MAY go funny again, or settle down. One way or another you'll know.

Good luck and pm if you need to.

E

Does your bub suffer from reflux? Is that why you are giving him the AR formulas? If not, then I would recommend trying the Nan 1 HA gold.
