Welcome to the new thread

Yep today was the first day in cloth for us, and it works. He seems to be happy and mum too.

Not sure what to do at night time though, any ideas?

I have only fleece and PUL covers. So far I only use fitted + cover.

Thanks Cordu for the thread!

Well Imogen had her first trial in MCN Funtimes today...see new avatar for proof :D

I changed it after three hours and it was well soaked and pooed but no leaks

I've just now washed it but the pocket is stained...oh dear (breastfed bub so bright yellow sorry TMI). I think I need to rinse soiled nappies first.

Now I think that is it for me for today, i have spent way too much time on here so have a great weekend clothies

Great idea Cordu!
For night I use a bamboo baby beehind with a wool cover - also BB - but when it has been in the wash I have used PUL and had no leaks or dramas - and my boy is a BIG wetter!

Lizzie - the staining is easily solved - stick it out in the sun and the staining will disappear in a couple of hours - like magic.

Seeing as many of us are first time converts - and not to bore you - but thought I would share my washing routine which has evolved afer some trial and error - I take them out of the bucket and pull inserts out. If they have poo they go into the laundry trough, if they are just wet straight into the machine. The pooey ones then get rinsed and scraped with the back side of an old dishwashing brush then added to the machine. I fill the machine with cold water and do a fast rinse cycle then add my half scoop of powder and do a hot wash. Any with staining go in the sun and the rest go on our shaded clothes line. In the evening I often stick all the hemp and bamboo in the dryer to finish them off properly and soften them up - but that step isn't exactly essential!!

I just chickened out and put him for the night into a disposables :o , as I don't have a wool cover yet, need to get one and some of the bbb are in the wash . I want a Loveybums wool cover or a bb wollen one and I need to get a bbb in cool colours.

Thanks for sharing your washing routine. I have so far not washed really pooey ones so it is great to hear your experience.

I know you shouldn't soak them but I really had one very pooey one (tmi) and I leave them over night now in water. Then I wash them tomorrow. Gotta love fleece liners. So easy to get the poo off.

Even DP liked the chameleon cover and didn't even ask me the price. He is always happy when I tell him that I bought it used from somebody for cheaper.;)

Hugs to all :hugs:

Ava is in a GK anytime tonight, goodness i'm worried!! She looks like a Sumo with this HUGE butt! I stuffed it with a Hemp Insert and Microfiber Booster, so :fingerscrossed: it is all good.

I got Matt to change her nappy tonight, I was busy changing Jacob, so left him to it... Thinking he was going to do it wrong! Much to my suprise it was RIGHT! He had even stuffed it properly! :D

We havent invested in a Little Squirt yet, Matt needs to look and see if it will fit on our toilet. But when I change the pooey ones, I take the insert out and scrap the poo into the toilet.

I just got allocated another $200 to spend on some more nappies :D. I think I will buy a Top Up Pack and Inserts Top Up Pack for $192 :smiliedance: (Greenkids) - Will get neutral colors so I can use them on Jacob too.

Good luck with the green kids, I chickened out and put Jasie in a sposie hehe.

Hey that's generous :smiliedance: , I first have to sell some nappies and some other stuff on ebay so I have more funds and DP doesn't notice. What is a top up pack ??

I just lay my eyes on a wool cover which looks so great and I read good review about it. But I wonder when the nappy has snaps and the cover too if that is so good for bub might get a bamboozle they have no snaps do they?

Better head of to bed as Jaise is asleep ...

Hppe you all have a good night

I have even dreamt of nappies already.....

IQUOTE]

I have been using a GK stuffed with a microfibre insert, but after the clothies convinced me wool works, I have had her in a BBH with both the BB inserts, plus a GK booster, and a BB Wool cover. No leaks. In fact, yesterday morning, after a marathon 11 hour sleep, the nappy felt dry. So I'm assuming its because the wool allows the air to flow around the bum.

I have used a PUL cover to, with no probs for 8 hours or so.

Lucky You!! Not only does your hubby change nappies correctly, he gives you more money!

I want one of those packs too, but I'm waiting until there are some fancier funtimes (and after we pay our BAS - due 28/2. DH is self employed and GST sucks!!) I saw some stripey ones just before we converted, and loved them. Of course, didnt buy them and they sold like hot cakes! :p

Draught - [/B]thanks for your washing tips! I mostly still use my fleece liners, cos the GK look so white and fluffy and new! Pathetic! Phoebe is only pooing every third day though, so the stains aren't an issue yet :D

Have a great day. I'm so excited we have this thread now! Much more comfortable talking with you guys! I know you already

If you soak PUL it will decrease it's waterproof abilities.

I noticed you are bidding on the Twins In Cloth AIO I want too:p

We havent invested in a Little Squirt yet, Matt needs to look and see if it will fit on our toilet.

They fit pretty much every toilet - you change the hose that is at the back of the toilet to the hose that comes with the little squirt. We used it in the toilet in rented houses too and it fitted all those toilets.

I love the little squirt - I would have died without it. (I bought it when I was pg with Ozzy so I don't know how you ladies do without one)

Just another question came to my mind.
How do you fit bub jumpsuit over their cloth nappy when you do a combo of bbb and a wool cover@ night?
As this might become quite bulky doesn't it.

Do they need to be then at least a size bigger?

Do you need now already a little squirt? Might look into buying one. I have still some other secret locations ;) . Does the poo come of easily? I noticed that I need to rinse it really well and that takes some time until it all comes off.

as for the soaking. it does effect the elastic on the MCN as well over time. it will go brittle.

with the washing i do a quick rinse in the washing machine of all the nappies (as i have a few to wash every other day)
then haf the powder as i would normally use.

the stained ones go straight into the sun to get bleached out. i finish the BBB in the dryer to make them go nice and soft. And the hemp inserts as well as they tend to go a bit stiff in the sun.

For over night we either use a BBB with a fleece or wool cover or a GK stuffed with a booster in it too.
and have never had a leak.

My Df loves the GKs he thinks they are so easy to use. So he doesnt mind changing the nappies too much.

I don't put jumpsuits over the top just a singlet or if it's too cold a little sleeping bag or Bonds baby nightgown (they are unisex) or a sleeping bag. Wool isn't what you would call waterproof and if compressed will leak so by putting a wondersuit over it, you will probably get some leaks unfortunately. A larger suit may be okay but ensure it isn't too tight over the nappy.

As I said before though stick to the nightgowns or sleeping bags if you want to be safe when using wool or just put a singlet on bubs:yes:

If your baby is completely breastfed you don't need to rinse the nappies at all - if you have introduced formula or solids I recommend rinsing. Once you have to rinse the poo should be a bit more formed so it's easy to rinse off.

I don't rinse Isla's nappies at all and do not get any permanent stains - if a nappy comes out of the wash with marks on it I just shove it back in with the next load and that usaually fixes it - if not hang it out in the sun and voila clean nappy again!

I have a grobag but it looks so big and I haven't used it. DP thinks it s hilarious as it looks so huge. Don't really like the wondersuits , Jasie was in one 0000 for the first days and then it got too tight. I have cotton ones .

Hi everyone

I'm thinking about buying more MCN and was wondering if one size nappies are really so good and if they would really last until TT for bub if you wash them every week.
In other words how is the wear and tear for instance on BBh or bamboo if I would wash them every second or third day.

I'm considering buying a package of 10 pocket nappies from another secret location (:p ) but they are from 6kg to 12 kg.
How do the GK or bumgenius look after 1/2 year or a year for instance?

andrewsmum
24-02-2007, 23:25
OK, call me stupid, but I've been looking on the nappy websites (pls tell me your secrets, LOL). I have a few questions for you.

These nappies, do your bubs wear just the one nappy all day but you replace their inserts when it gets wet/pooed on? Or do you need to change the entire nappy each time? Meaning that you'll go through (I guess, say) 8 nappies a day? Or is it one nappy, 8 inserts?

The AIO's - does that mean you don't need to use a waterproof pilcher over the nappy?

I'm interested in the BBB's starter pack, but can you also please lead me to a GK website (PM me please).

Thanks for your assistance in advance.
Kylie

Melo

Just PM'd you the GK website Kylie :)

At the moment i've used GK and BBB on Ava... GK are pockets (Has a bit at the back where you put the insert in) and when they are wet or have pooed you need to change the whole nappy.. Same with BBB also.

I dont actually think I like the BBB. I'm not sure, it looks so funny on Ava... I'm waiting on a cover that I brought from Buyena.. The snap in inserts confuse me lol :o.

AIO - Have everything, insert, water proof cover.

I put Ava in a GK Anytime last night, and it lasted ALL night! I had stuffed it with a Hemp Insert and Microfiber Booster. She looked like a sumo with this huge bubble butt..

Goodness, this thread is moving fast!

Melo - I think I am more keen on the pocket style too, rather than the fitteds with covers.

I am going to attempt to make my nappies today. :p I said that Friday too! But I'm up early enough that the housework should get done and I'll have some 'me' time....

Cordu - you sound like you've been busy stocking your stash :D Your bubs is gonna have the cutest butt around..... LOL

Raven - have you found the sites yet?

Andrews Mum - Like Melo said - the All In Ones and the Pocket nappies come with their own covers, so you dont need to put anything over the top. You need to use a new one of these at each change. I have 8 nappies in my collection atm, and it is a rush job to get them washed and dried in time for the next use. If you wanted to wash every day, I reckon 12 nappies would be plenty. Especially as bubs start sleepng through the night and are not having nappy changes at 3am! Obviously if you want to wash less frequently - or develop a MCN addiction :devil6: - you will need more!

The 'fitted' nappies - Baby Beehinds, Tots Bots etc - need a cover over the top, as they are just a soft cloth nappy.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and for the record, not sure who was asking, I dont rinse Phoebe's poo either. Just dry pail it, then straight in the machine. No stains yet....

I can't believe how many of our group are into MCN! Lovely!

I now have about 15 Green Kids and about 10 Baby Beehinds nappies and with DS in them 100% and DD2 in them as much as I can I can just make it through two days before I need to wash.

Andrewsmum - with all of the nappies the whole nappy needs to be changed at each change - the reason for inserts is that you can add or reduce the number of inserts depending on your absorbancy needs. For example - my DS is a BIG wetter during the day so I will stick extra inserts in his nappy. A friend of mine needs extra inserts in the morning for her baby girl then just uses light ones for the rest of the day as she does BIG wees in the morning and just little ones the rest of the day.

Does that help explain a bit more?

Melo - I was going to say too, with the heat of Para I would stick your bamboo ones in a dryer (if you have one) to soften them up, otherwise if you rub the fabric back on itself it will soften up too - otherwise they will start to feel a bit like cardboard.

No I think it was a good price considering it was virtually new, that included incorporating the postage of $3..60 I think it was - any higher though and I would have said that was a bit much.

I'm thinking about buying more MCN and was wondering if one size nappies are really so good and if they would really last until TT for bub if you wash them every week.

I personally don't think the bumgenius pockets would last the distance from birth to toilet training at all. The velcro would definately need replacing. The baby beehinds would though and the GK's well the velcro could last but some nappies may need the velcro replaced (which is easier to do than the bumgenius), I have one GK's that the velcro is just starting to lift and that's been 8 months I think.

An AIO you don't need a cover over it at all they are a All in One so the waterproof part is actually in the nappy already.

I think everyone explained your other questions didn't they?

Check out these sites too they are very helpful:

Melo - I was going to say too, with the heat of Para I would stick your bamboo ones in a dryer (if you have one) to soften them up, otherwise if you rub the fabric back on itself it will soften up too - otherwise they will start to feel a bit like cardboard.

Remember to put only on a warm setting as hot can melt your snaps

No I think it was a good price considering it was virtually new, that included incorporating the postage of $3..60 I think it was - any higher though and I would have said that was a bit much.

Yep I wouldn't have gone higher than $20 that was my maximum. So I'm pretty happy about it !!

Did you bid for the cover on buyena?
Last time I looked it was up to $21, seems to be very sought after.

Thanks for your opinion on how long the nappies will last.I was thinking in buying some GK but personally I find them too expensive and will rather buy a bulk packet of 10 pocket nappies and I can even choose the patterns.

Have been a bit quiet lately. Have had reocurring tonsillitis, so I've been feeling quite miserable.Am getting better though. Will be back later to post as we all know I love my MCN's!!:yelclap: And yes I managed to order a HoneyBoy from Cherubs Kiss for Josh

You poor thing. Glad you are feeling better now, nothing is worse than being sick.
Congrats on the Honeyboy, is that an AIO?
I have a pocket from CK but I'm not sure if it is a honeyboy and it is a L, so it will still rest a while in the cupboard. Always wonder what is a Honeyboy, is that a special kind of nappy. Sorry for the ignorance.

LOL

I am always hunting for a bargain, and that's how I my stash is building up.....:p

I haven't tried pockets yet, as I don't have one in the right size yet, just some wonderoos but they look so big. Have to wait until he is 6 kg , tried on from 6kg on yesterday but it looked still a bit big although Jasie has quite chubby legs.

Did you make some nappies? How did it go?
I also wanted to sew some but first I need the sewing machine and all the PUL , fleece etc.
Well then I found the secret trading site and got my nappies for a bargain price there.

Oh my I think we have created a monster...how quick is this thread moving...gotta love MCN's

Imogen was in her Rose Anytime today while we went for squizz at the Baby & Kids Market. I brought a new BBB in the greenish colour and it is now drying on the line. I can't wait to use it but don't have any covers yet. I am desperate to stock up on wool covers but they are hard to come buy.
Start knitting Rave and I'll place my first order :D

I'm gonna invest in a little squirt when Imogen starts on her solids (long way away) so for now I can spend every last dollar on stocking up my pile.

If anyone has any ideas about getting my hands on some hand knitted wool covers please do share :hugs: sharing is caring xox

That depends on the type of wool (varigated can be more), if it has embellishments etc. Is there a soaker you had your eye on? And how much was it?

If the cover is soiled you will need to change the cover otherwise 1 cover a day will suffice. I recommend 4 covers would be good though. You could have 2 pul, 1 fleece and 1 wool perhaps?

Don't worry - half of us didn't have our babies in Dec - that was just when they were originally due and we sort of stuck together. Mine is 3 months old already!

Well done on the holiday. We are going camping in a couple of weeks and DH has already put his foot down about taking the nappy bucket with us so I will be buying my first packet of disposables since he was born (I bought one box before he was born that we didn't finish before he grew out of them!)

I have PM'd you.
If you are using nappies that need covers exclusively then I would aim for enough covers for at least 2/3 of them - I often find that the cover needs washing as well as the nappy.

He had a bbh on and didn't looked that bulky still the ECN asked if he is not in a disposable.

Hi Everyone

Well I have caught the cloth nappy bug and am currently trying to figure out what nappies I want to try next. At the moment all I have tried are the Pea Pods. I am trying to wade through all the info bit it is all a bit confusing so I have a couple of q's you may all be able to please help me with.

I don't have a huge budget so am being quite careful in what i buy to make sure I will get the most use out of the nappies.

With the Swaddlebees I went onto The Wee Wuns site and there are quite a few different types of Swaddlebees Pocket Nappies. I have read all the descriptions but am confused as to which ones would be best to try first of this brand - anyone who can help me?

Also, are the Green Kids Nappies very very bulky with all the inserts?

Hmmm I am sure I will have some more q's later!

Thanks!!

Hi Everyone

It depends which inserts. I have a nice hefty 7.5 kg chubby bubby and they don't seem bulky anymore but did when he was a newborn.

Mrs Dolphin - GK are a bit bulky at night when you put more stuffing in them. During the day I only put in an Hour Glass Hemp Insert and that is fine! Not too bulky then.

I've ordered a Swaddlebees Pocket from the Wee Wuns last week (havent got it yet though). I just got the Aplix one. I think the biggest difference between the 3 would be the way they close e.g. Aplix or Snaps. Not too sure though.

I have tried the side snapping pocket swaddlebees and love them as do I love the swaddlebees organic velour nappies - they are devine! Super Soft!

The hemparoos from GK's are going to be bulky - the hourglass are very trim though - a bit tooo trim for my liking I prefer the bubblebutt look myself.

How can I actully still fit clothes over his BBH + cover. Does in AIO or a pocket nappy makes it more trim and easilier to fit over pants ?

What to do? Wash it again?

Great looking nappy , can I order some

I'll let you know when they're ready  I bought some more PUL yesterday, and they have some gorgeous boyish prints - I might go into business yet!!:D (or have another bub  )

Yay!! Yeah, i'm trying to build up my stash for DS.

I got a Pea Pods and Swaddlebee yesterday, not very keen on the Pea Pods, the pocket opening is SO big and saggy (Is this usual?!). The Swaddlebee is VERY trim, its in the wash! I cant wait to put in on Ava!

Just counted my stash and i've got over 20 nappies already . I've only been converted for a few weeks...

OMG! 20 nappies! Although, you have two in them so you need more!! LOL
I got a Swaddlebee and a Pea Pod on Tues!

I used the swaddlebee AIO today, she only lasted about an hour and a half before it was wet on the leg area, however, in saying that, I hadnt stuffed anything extra in there, so will do that next time. But it was a VERY trim fitting nappy, and oh so soft!

Havent used the PP, but I thought it looked saggy as well. I thought it was maybe cos I bought it second hand, but I guess that must be the way it is. Will give it a go tomorrow and review it. LOL

here my little man in his greenkids sunflower anytime
doesnt he look cute

LOVE the frog cover  So cute!

I would wash it again and see how it goes. What a pain. Do you use liners? They really help with the stain factor (although I didnt put one in the home made nappy today, and she decided to do her 'every 3 day' poo in it !!! I hope it washes out or she's in trouble! LOL

Which reminds me - I need to do a load of nappies tonight....

Who would have thought we could talk so much about nappies?? DH is amazed I can still be looking/talking about them.

Better go. Gotta watch Law and Order.

Mel - sometimes it takes a second wear and wash and sitting in the sun to have the full effect.

Well I can report that DH is starting to "get it". He gave DS his first bath tonight and went to put a GK on him. I stopped him and said that he needed bamboo for overnight and told him to wait and I would do it and he responded that he knew what bamboo was and put a BBB on DS! Wonders will never cease! Earlier today he asked why DD2 ws wearing a disposable. (She had been through all the GK's in a series of water, sand and wee incidents and they were in the wash.)

Hmmm...back to Law and Order!

Mel - I'm still having the same problem with stained GK's from their first wear. The sun helped a little but I can still see staining. I may look into buying liners but it defeats the purpose a little too me as the $$ would quickly add up for liners.
Any brands/types recommended by those who use them??

I managed to "win" two second hand knitted soakers and am waiting for these to arrive in the post :smiliedance: and when i havce moew money I'll splash out on a new one too.

I'm also keeping my eye out for a more trim fitting MCN as i can already see the bubble butt look (though gorgeous) won't be ideal under winter clothes unless I go up a size.

Mel I can't believe you already have 20 MCN's - any favourites stand out to you yet?

Melo

Okay, i'll rewash it tomorrow.. With tonights mammoth poo.

I picked up liners today in the shop and then put them back!! Darn, i'll see if the poo comes out tomorrow..

LizzieLou, I too will need to go up in a size with Avas clothes for winter because of the Bubblebutt effect! I had troubles today putting on her 000 over the GK - But if shes in a Disposable she can still fit into a 0000.

I LOVE the Swaddlebee! Am considering buying LOTS more, they are so trim fitting and gorgeous..

Just a general question, I am using during the daytime BBH and in the night BBB and a cover, and after a change when they are wet they start to smell , any idea what you can do about it.They don't smell after a wash when they are dry though. I started to put into the nappy bucket some tea tree oil so it doesn't smell so bad and it kills the bacteria from the poo (tmi)

Hugs to you all

Cordu - mine started to smell too after a while - I found that instead of just rinsing them under the tap I now do a proper rinse cycle in the machine before doing a hot wash and the smell problem has reduced a lot.

Thanks , I'm doing this already, just wanted to know if this is normal that hemp or bamboo is so smelly ....

I wash his bum after every nappy change so he smells lovely and I'm using always different cover so the ones just used can air out. Might try the bicarb method .....

But the tea tree oil helps to elimate the smell in the bucket. I noticed this morning.....

My nappies got much less smelly when I started doing smaller loads (in the same amount of water). I also needed to use more detergent - you might need to fiddle with the amount you use (too much can also cause problems). Hemp and bamboo do have their own "special" smell though!

O'mum is the swaddlebees comparable with the TIC AIO regarding the trimness.

I need to get more but I wanted to try a swaddlebees, just not sure if a pocket or an AIO.

Has anybody tried the swaddlebees AIO yet?

Hope every one has a great day.

Just sprinkle a bit in the bottom and then when it starts getting smelly again sprinkle a bit more in on top of the nappies;)

Tea Lady

I do Melo (usually) - I have a little squirt attached to the toilet so I get the worst of it off and then it goes in the bucket. I don't always do the bf poos though - it usually comes off in the wash, but since my machine is about 100 years old sometimes I get lovely orange chunks through the wash, so I try to rinse first! Alternatively you could rinse them in the laundry sink before chucking them in the machine. :)

They are expensive.
They talk about how you can just snap the insert out and use a new one. But newborn breastfed poos dont allow that hehe
I really like the nappy i'd more than likly buy another one buy another one. They just feel so soft, and the insert is the same :)

He had his on for around 5 hours today and it didnt leak. He even had a nap in it for a few hours
The insert was very heavy when i took it out.
So they do work quite well as Rylan is a heavy wetter.

He had a nap for about 4 hours the other day in a GK anytime and it leaked through :( (i wasnt expecting him to sleep so long) onto the bed.

I just use a drawstring bag and never needed a 'wet bag' though as I wrap the nappy up tight and place it in the bag first so it isn't like it is just tumbling around in the bag - did that even make sense?

thanks :) I haven't heard from them but I might order one of their wool covers

just another question I got a new BBB and don't really know how to treat it. DO I have to do the vinegar, bicarboante session or is it enough just to wash it a few times. Do the coloured BBB ones fade in the wash. I have a Mandy Macs dyed and it faded a bit after 2 washes.

just wash it 3 times in the wash on hot (about 50c)
first time using powder the next 2 dont worry about the powder.

hand them out on the line with the white side up like this and the colour will stay good for quite a while :)
