My 6week DS has come down with a bit of a cold. He has a stuffy nose & a chesty cough. Can anyone recommend a good medicine? Is Child Panadol the best to use?
I think I would buy over-the-counter medicine as he is not to sick to rush to the doctor.
And how do you give the medicine to a baby? One friend says she puts the medicine into their milk. Is this a good idea?

Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks

Hi

I've found Fess Little Noses to be very effective in unblocking a nose. It is just saline drops, and I use Vicks Baby Balsam which is a very gentle decongestant.
Dimetapp Infant Drops can be used from 1 mth old and that relieves nasal and sinus congestion. You can buy it over the counter, but it'll will need a pharmacist label on it.

You can give him panadol, but it's only a pain reliever, so unless he's in pain, it won't do much.

I don't think there is anything you can give a little bub for a cough, so unless he is having breathing difficulties, I would just prop him up a bit so the fluid drains and hopefully you won't have to take him to a Dr.

Hope this helps :)

LIke Kaidensmum said...prop him up a bit. We put Millars cot on a slight tilt when he has a cold and it keeps him from bcoming blocked up in the night.

We always go for the natural medicines....I have found the Brauers range to be awesome, the work every time. There is a brand of oil capsules called Karvol...you just pop the capsule open and dab some of the oil on their clothes. Good luck, hope bubs gets better v soon!

I have used the vicks baby balsam when bubs had a cold & it seems to work wonders as well as smelling yummo i would rub it in every nappy change on his chest & back.
I also found when he was really blocked up i would sit in the bathroom with bubs while daddy had a shower heh i also had an oil burner going with normal vicks in it & i found cause both of us had chesty colds it helped relieve a lot of the congestion.
I also agree with propping bubs up as this is also great for keeping their chest clear.
Like one of the others mums said panadol really isnt going to help with a cold except to help them sleep so keep it for this instance as an emergency back up. I wouldnt advise putting the panadol in their milk cause if they dont drink it all you then dont know how much medicine they have had. I learnt to never make it a big thing about them having the medicine & to make sure you get a syringe to administer the dose ( most baby panadol comes with it as does the neurofen & dymadon ) you can get them separately in packs which have different sized syringes as well as spoons for when they are older. The other trick is to place the syringe at the side of their mouth so it goes straight down otherwise as soon as it hits their tongue they hate the taste & spit it out or gag. Dymadon is nicer tasting with an orange flavour by the way !
Hope bubs gets better soon !

Do you have a vaporiser? These are excellent!
The vicks I dont believe is recommended that young is it? Im not sure.
The fess is good too but I found as a wee bub, it was too big for his little nose but its worth a try.

I would get a vaporiser, put some menthol in it, elevate the end of the cot try the fess.

Thank you to all of you for your great advice. I will not rush out & buy medicine, let nature take its course but I will in the meantime prop him up in bed & I have baby balsm cream to try.

I think he is slowly on his way to recovery :)
