I thought I'd try to add my birth story while Isaac is sleeping and the boys are playing happily. We'll see if I can type it fast enough! And just a warning in advance, it may be long... (I tend to get a bit carried away!)
On monday Jan 29 I had an appointment with the midi at the hospital. I asked her what my chances were of having this baby early even though my other 4 were overdue or on time. She nicely told me "slim to none" and asked me why. I proceeded to tell her my sob story. My Dh, brother and parents all work from 5.30am until 6-7pm 5 days a week and can not get time off. My sisters were both leaving town on the 10th (my due date) and 11th of Feb. One on her honeymoon and the other to Thailand for 6 months, and they were the only people that could look after my other 4 children while I was in hospital. She took pity on me and did an internal and found me to be 4cm dialated ans she also did a stretch and sweep. She said that because my condition was very favourible they were happy to break my waters on monday Feb 5.
As relieved as I was to know that there would be someone to look after the other children, I was slightly terrified about being induced early. I was also worried that my DH wouldn't be there for the birth, which was very important to us both. One of my sisters was told when she would need to arrive for babysitting duty and my other sister was going to be my support in the absence of DH.
Monday morning arrived and so did my sister to babysit. I arrived at the hospital at 7am and was put on the monitor for about an hour. At 8.30 My waters were broken and my other sister arrived shortly after.
The doctor told me that they would let me go 2 hours on my own before starting the drip to get labour started. I didn't see the doctor again until after the birth. I spoke to the midwife and decided that a med student could assist with the birth. I also told the midwife that I was hoping that the labour would be long enough to allow DH to arrive. She was lovely and let me go on my own until 12.30pm. Then she came in and said that she would have to start the drip or the doctor would want to know why. I had to have a line put in as I ran a high risk of PPH and they needed to run syntocin as soon as I gave birth in high volumes to prevent it. It took them 4 trys to get the huge line in and I ended up with 2 sore arms and the drip in my elbow which is the main place I didn't want it. The drip was started at 1.30pm. (I can't believe my kids are still asleep or playing happily!!)
At 3.30 Labour had offically begun. From the moment the drip started, I did not move from the bed. I didn't want to do anything to speed it up until DH was there. When my Sister rang DH at 3.30 to let him know it had begun, he told her that he was not going to do any more pick-ups (he's a courrier driver) and he 'Knew how long it takes' and would be there. Very cocky I thought, but I hoped he was right.
My sister was worried that after being with me all day, my DH would want her to leave when he arrived and she would miss the birth. She was pleasntly surprised when he arrived sometime arround 5.30 or 6 and told her he didn't mind if she stayed. Once he arrived, the midwife came in and told me not to hold on any longer!
At 7pm I started to feel the need to poo. The midi wouldn't let me off the bed in case I had the baby on the floor. She told me to do a big poo and I would have the baby. I really didn't want to do that so I tried not to. That lasted about 5 min, then my body started pushing for me. I was so embarrased that I was pooing on the bed (which the midi cleaned up so fast I almost thought it hadn't happened) then all shame left the room and Issac was born in 2 pushes at 10 past 7. As I turned to hold him (I was on my hands and knees for the birth), I managed to rip the drip out of my arm and the midi almost passed out. She said she was really sorry but she had to get another line in now and there would be no time for a local (it was a huge line). I barely even felt it though as I wa focused on baby.
My sister got to cut the cord (thanks DH!) and all was great.
Isaac was 7lb 8 1/2 oz or 3700g, 34cm head and 56cm long. No stitches or pain relief. He is breast feeding well and sleeping well to!
If you stuck with me, thanks for reading! (I told you I can get carried away!!), And I can't believe my boys co-operated long enought for me to type it all!
