I need some advice........my bub is now 5 days old and after the first difficult days has taken really well to feeding. Only problem is he falls asleep at the boob constantly. Sometimes it's only after 10 minutes.....I've tried blowing in his face, tickling his throat, feet and it only works for a few more sucks.

Once I take him off completely he will wake after a while and scream for more but it ends up feeds can sometimes take up to one and a half hours..........Any tips???? :)

I didnt find it a problem...I guess if you have other kids and you cant sit around feeding all day it would be annoying and time consuming...but thats the joy of first babies...I just sat around feeding and holding my baby for about the first 3 months of his life!!

I wouldnt keep trying to wake your baby up, juet enjoy the peace. As long as he has lots of wet/dirty nappies and bubba is gaining weight he is getting plenty.

i remember the nurse telling me that if you play with the palm of their hand it makes them suck...

You can tickle their feet sometimes reminds them to suck, in these early days their sucking is so all over the place as your milk is still getting settled he could just be waiting for let down, or taking a breather, I also didn't seem to mind my DD falling asleep and would let her, but we're all different! You can contact the ABA they will be able to help you as well, for more information.

It's very tiring the first few weeks/months you're doing great!

Hi

Have you tried a dummy? Maybe bubs is just sucking for comfort so maybe a dummy might help.

Grrrr Cringe cringe :(
DOnt't do it!
Either make sure he's not too hot. You might have to undress him tohis nappy to feed him.
He's only 5 days old and will wake up more soon so resist the dummy for now  In hindsight the BFing for the first few seeks was not easy but now nearly 5 months on it is SO worth it!!!
GL and CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BABY BOY happybirthday

They recommend not introducing a bottle or dummy until 6 weeks so breastfeeding is established.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, sounds quite normal for such a young baby, unless of course you're finding it's a real inconvenience. Perhaps you could try giving him one breast, then changing his nappy or undressing him to wake him up before giving the other. Like Stellarella said, if he having lots of dirty nappies and putting on weight, he's healthy. Congratulations by the way!!!

Congratulations!!
Sounds perfectly normal to me, as long as baby is getting completely unrestricted access to the boob, it is fine. They will take as much as they need, as often as they need.
Trying to keep them feeding when they really don't want to is not really that good for them.
I also would shy away from a dummy.

You are doing great, it can feel as though baby is doing nothing but feeding and sleeping to start with, but it will not take long, and bub will become very efficient at feeding.

Ditto about the wet nappies, and weight gain, if all that is ok,

Thanks Ladies.....:hugs:

He's feeding every 2-3 hours depending on the day and is sleeping really well so hopefully it's just a passing thing. Will try tickleling his palm.

No shortage of dirty nappies either

Hi,

I also had this problem, I would unwrap, tickle /rub feet, play with hand gently blow in his face.

I found unwrapping and playing with his feet most sucessful and nappy change in the middle of a feed

Congratulations on your baby boy

Put Bub in just a nappy and have a wet cloth handy to put on their back... that keeps them awake!

2-3hrs feeds is great!!

My baby was just the same, I found changing the nappy between sides a winner.

i tried a dummy at 3 weeks on advice from my mm, and her sucking went all to hell - took me two weeks to get her back to feeding properly. Wish I had waited til feeding was established for us.

Like others said... I spent hours (most of the day sometimes!) feeding her for the first 9 weeks! But she's a 4 mins a side girl now so it gets better:D Hang in there you are doing great.

For such a young baby that is normal. Real sleep and eating routines usually start at 6-8 weeks or sometimes not even until 12 weeks.

Everyone will give you advice on what is right and what isnt, but its up to you and your instincts to tell you what is ok and what isn't. Everyone has their own limits etc, and if him falling asleep and cuddling on you isn't a problem to YOU, then thats ok! If you do see it as a problem, change it. With all "habits" - if you want to call it that - that babies nad children develop, its up to the caregivers to decide if they can tolerate it or not. You can always reverse a "habit" and reinforce a new tactic.

Congrats on your new baby! Enjoy your babymoon and listen to your instincts. :) :yelclap::yelclap::D

Hey LMenz, I have this problem too. I mostly stroke his face, and sometimes try pulling away from him which usually makes him suck again if he's actually hungry. If he doesn't respond to these then I leave him be.

Only time will tell I guess whether it's all ok or not...
