My DD developed eczema when she was around 3mo. It was moderately severe with a rash all over her trunk, behind knees, wrists etc. As hard as I tried I never found out what triggered it ....it just seemed to be caused by dry air if anything.

She has had it off and on (but much more mild) until about 2mo ago. Well it seems to have disappeared :detective:

For the first time since she was a brand new bub her skin is like silk!:smiliedance:

I have heard that most children grow out of their eczema by 5yo....has anyone experienced this...and what age did your child stop having flare-ups??

Am I celebrating too soon???

My DD has excema which appeared when she was around 2 months old. I have recently had tests done and found she has a nut allergy. I cut out nuts from my diet (as she's on breast milk) and it's cleared up about 90%. I do use a steroid cream on the bad bits but now they rarely flare up anymore.

has your DD had allergy tests done?

I haven't had any allergy tests done on DD (to be honest I don't think it is a good idea unless it is needed to confirm a serious allergic reaction). I did a series of elimination diets for myself when DD was 4-6mo and nothing that I cut out (dairy, eggs) made any difference to her skin. DD hasn't had any nuts and I haven't eaten nuts at all since I found out I was pregnant so probably not that I would say. She is still breastfed.

She now has been introduced to most foods and hasn't had any reaction. The only time she used to flare up was when we had very dry weather in Melbourne.

The other thing I always noticed with her skin was that her skin suddenly became very smooth when she had a cold. From this I concluded that her eczema might also have something to do with her immune system. The only thing that happened to her around 12mo was she got her vaccinations...Hmm :detective:

The current concensus seems to be that the vast majority of eczema cases are to do with a break down in the "waterproof" layer of the skin causing excessive drying and irritation.

I am so glad that things have settled down, Alison. Eczema is awful to watch your child struggle with.

Mine have both grown out of the worst of it. We have rare flare ups (interestingly not linked to their milk allergy, but rather to moisture/dryness) but they are really not a problem in comparison to how it used to be.

I do hope that Lizzy has indeed grown out of her eczema. It has been steadily improving over the last 6mo - here's hoping that it is gone for good - although maybe I will know when winter arrives. Even though we have central heating I try not to use it unless absolutely necessary as it dries the air out so badly.

Fingers crossed :fingerscrossed:

Duchessa - That's good news that your twins have mostly grown out of their eczema. It must be a big relief for you.
