View Full Version : Big Bed??
Hello i was wondering what people thought was a good age to change from a cot to a big bed?
I have a cheeky 15 month old And was wondering when we make that step? We are in no hurry.
Any thoughts or stories would be a bonus!!
Thanks!
I have a 16 month old with a cot phobia ( bad cc'ing experience) so we have just moved her to a matress on the floor from our bed...it's been 3 nights so far and going well, so I think on the weekend we will be getting her a single bed. Tossing up between a normal single or a toddler bed. Toddler bed sooo cute, but still help DD fall asleep so I think single bed would be more practical.
I'm not sure about the age thing, I would also be interested to know if there is a reccomended age to put them in big bed.

Yes im very curious to find out about this as my boy is only coming up for 9mths but is 3/4 the way up his cot which i got from IKEA mind you because it converted to the junior bed !!!!!!! So much for that idea !!!!!! heheheh
My sister didnt put my nephew into a bed until he was around the 2yr mark now that being said he wasnt as tall as my bubs !
I mean i know we dont have to rush out this weekend but im thinking by the time the new year comes around we arent going to have much choice as he just keeps growing ! He is already in size 1 !
So what would you other mums do ?
We've got a cot that converts to a toddler bed too. I'm not going to change it from the cot until she starts trying to climb out. If she's happy in there then so am I.
my son slept in our bed and still does..we didnt use the cot except the first few days back from hospital.... but we put him on his own single bed some nights starting from age one.... then when he was 2 we bought him a double bed and now he alternates from our bed to his bed all night long...
Wow thanks guys! I thought i would try when bubba could climb up, she can climb down at the moment! That might be sooner then later!!! lol
Wow your bubby in size 1 at 9.5 months! Isn't amazing the different sizes at different ages!!
Thanks for your reply's!!!! :)
Hi there,
There is actually a maximum recommended height for kids in cots, I can't find the info for it now, but they usually reach it at about two. There are many kids though, that learn how to climb out earlier!!!
We also have an IKEA convertible bed. Hopfully he will be in the cot for as long as possible!!! :)

I guess im lucky at the moment that even with his size he hasnt figured out how to pull himself up at the side let alone climb in & out cause i can see we will be buying a new bed not too longer after that considering he is almost the same length as it !
Shan - I think its amazing at how all bubs are different & its great also oh how boring it would be if they were the same ! I never had a newborn baby in size as bubs was the size of an average 2mth old when we came home after 2 days ! We had to go out & buy him clothes as everything we had was too small ! hehehe Cant wait to have another !

Hi Shan,
O was 4.4kg and 54cm at birth, I cant remember head circ though.
He is now 16.5 months and weighs just over 14kg and is about 85 cm last time I measured him.
You should check out the thread called Bubs born July-Aug04 as there are some mums and bubs from June - October 04 on there, its great we all love chatting about what our bubs are up to!!!
Wow what a big boy, he is adorable! Thanks for that tip!! I'll look into that!!!
Thanks again! :)

Ok well my bubs name is Harrison but we call him Harry :D
He was 4.5kgs just an ounce off 10lb was 57cm in length & his head circ was 38cm !
Whats actually quite scary is im now having to buy size 2 clothing  he is going to be beating me up by the time he is 5yrs old im only 5'5 so he gets it all from Daddy being 6'4 !!!!
Im ready for a bubs now & he is only 9mths but not only is my partner not ready but we need to get money a little more organised now im a SAHM plus we have also been looking at the fact i was soooo sick while preggers with him so if i were like that again he would not get any care jks hehehehe so he will need to be able to somewhat look after himself as i couldnt go near food let alone the kitchen.

I went from having a 4lb 1oz baby - Jesse, who is now 4 years old and 21kg and around 112cm in height, to an 8lb 9oz baby, 51cm length, 35.5cm h/c. Lucas is now almost 18 months and weighs in at 19kg and his height is 95cm - he's just started into size 3 clothes!! At the rate he's growing the boys are going to be the same size before I know it. The MCHN keeps asking if I'm putting fertiliser in his nappy LOL!

It must be the dads! My DH is 6'5" (I'm 5'7")
Another thing is shoes for these big bubbas - Lucas is in a size 6 at the moment but the problem we're having is that he is in the widest fitting Clarks makes (& the widest fitting you can buy in Australia!) and he's starting to grow out of them - flash forward 15 years, I'll be buying alot of shoes from the U.S over the internet I predict!
