View Full Version : 7 month old waking up between 40 min sleep cycles
Hi All
My DD has always slept quite well at night but just recently she has begun waking 40 mins after she goes down to sleep. I usually go in, roll her back over onto her back and put the dummy in and she goes back to sleep fine. It is just annoying though as it can happen every 40 mins thru the night!
We never have had this prob with her before now. I was thinking it might have been due to the hot nights we have been having here in Adelaide but Im not so sure.
Is this normal? Do I need to re-train her sleeping habits again? I dont really want to take the dummy away yet. She only ever has it for sleep time.
Thanks for reading

Hi Kate,
Yes, that is normal. They go through different sleeping phases. My DD is 15 months and still has a dummy for sleeping. When she was younger, I went up and put the dummy in in case she woke up. But then this stopped and she put it in herself, because I didn't do it anymore. Or most of the times she was not even really awake and she fell asleep without the dummy. In my case the key was not to go in, when you hear that she is awake. She will probably fall asleep herself again or will have to learn to find the dummy herself in the cot. Otherwise you will be her slave forever

Oliver started doing this recently too - he is 6.5 months. Depending on how much he took at his bedtime feed, I will sometimes offer 50ml of formula (he takes it in his cot, a bit like a dreamfeed) or I will put his dummy in and he goes to sleep. He only seems to do it for the first sleep cycle, and then he sleeps through. Sorry I can't be more help!

Hey Kate,
My bub is nearly nine months old, and was getting up to the same thing a couple of months ago.
Is your little one still wrapped? If not, she might be able to get to the dummy herself. If you're happy for her to still have the dummy, and she can reach it, why not put another one in there, just in case?
Also, I was rolling my little man back onto his back every time he woke up. When I left him to his own devices (and yeah, sorry, but that meant crying for a couple of minutes... :o ), I actually found that he slept better on his tummy.
I know it's frustrating, but give it some time and your bub will go back to her former habits.
Hi Kate
My 6.5 month old started doing this a month or so ago also. I just loosely wrapped him when he went to bed and it stopped. It always happened at nighttime but not during the day.
