my nearly month old daughter has only had 2 feeds in the last 12 hours, she would usually have had about 4, i'm a little worried......is it usual for babies to halve their feeding from time to time or should i be worried
From memory I don't think you should let bubs go for more than 6 hours without a feed. If she is still alert and active and wetting nappies she is probably ok. Maybe she has got her night and day mixed up and is having her big sleeps now. She might have you up half the night feeding tonight. Trust your instincts - if you are worried why not ring the doctors or even the hospital where she was born and chat to a midwife. Hope she is ok.:fingerscrossed:
Babies can be weird-some days they are forever on the boob-some days they arent hungry at all.
Like previous poster said-trust your instincts.
If shes having lots of wet nappies then shes fine.
:hugs:

Firstly are you offering her feeds...try offering the breast as much as possible to encourage her...
Secondly, is she generally content, having the usual number of wet/dirty nappies and is her skin normal, plump etc??
If she is not unhappy and seems well then she may just be getting better at taking more milk at a feed therefore feeds less often...just keep offering her the breast...
DS was like this. He was born by c/s and maybe a bit groggy from the drugs so he went 4-6 hours with out a feed.
My advice from the ABA was to wake him for feeds every 2 hours
The idea being that if he didn't get enough kilojoules he wouldn't wake himself for feeds and wouldn't thrive.
The little porker is now 8.5kg at 4/12 m.o
(Hhhmmm maybe every 2 hours was a little over zealous. Maybe you should stick to three)
HTH:wave: and congratulations on your new addition :)
a very young baby only has a small tummy and so will usually feed frequently. a baby having only breastmilk will need (usually) at least 8-10 feeds over 24hrs.
at only a few weeks old a baby can also get dehydrated quite quickly so i would wake and offer a breastfeed to your baby if she sleeps for longer than four hours betwen feeds.
keeping a nappy count will help to reassure you that she is getting plenty of milk. also how she looks, generally healthy and alert.
give the ABA helpline (http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/products/counselling.asp) a call.

Yeah it's not recommended to let bub go over that long without a feed. Try and encourage her to take it. If she falls asleep on it because she is tired try and tickle her feet so that will wake her a little to suckle.
Like the other's said keep an eye on how many wet nappies she is having.
Hi
This may be a bit late but the same thing happened to me when my bub was 5 weeks. He didnt feed for 10 hours and wasnt at all happy and refused the breast - he was in pain. I expressed 2 x in this time to make sure I was emptying and I still got mastitis the next day but he came right. After much thinking the only thing I can think of was that he had an upset tummy as I had a curry the night before.
