Hi all,
Just wanted to know....do middies stitch you up if need be or do they call the doc?? I always thought they did but people keep telling me they don't.
With DS the ob arrived for that part so I wasn't sure.
Thanks and please don't laugh at me.

Hi Happy Lady,

The midwife got a doctor to stitch me up - I got a female doctor, and she did a great job - it was hard to see where I'd torn after a couple of weeks - and I'd had a big tear  .

The midwife stiched me up, doc was busy with bubby.
But I suppose it's different everywhere??

thats an awesome question.. i have been wondering the same thing.. i was stitched by the doc but that was because he had to be there for my labour due to it not going quite to plan.

The reason I got into this debate with some family was that I was saying that middies did it because what else are they going to do at a birth centre or home birth. They said that someone would call a dr??
I didn't think so!!!

I also got stitched up by the doctor but there could be a number of reasons as to why this was for one i was torn very badly all internally etc plus as the labour didnt go very well i had 3 doctors as well as a team of midwives & the head midwife in with me !!!! ( i like an audience HAH ! )
Actually now that i think about it when we did my antenatal class the midwife talked about how the midwives used to use the forceps but now no longer do so maybe my hospital has also taken the stitching job away from them (?). Its very interesting how each hospital is different with procedure.

p.s - cosmic dont stress too much but they say if they offer a cut its better to take this than tear but yeah i dont know as i tore internally so i doubt an episiotomy would have helped ! Actually lets start a thread about this !
Dont mind me :o

I had a small tear with my first labour and the midwife stitched me up. The only time they called the Dr was when i kept telling them i had to push and they didnt believe me so i asked for the Dr.

Hello Happy Rady :p ,

The midwife can and will stitch you up should you tear and require any stitches, for a first, second or third degree tear.

In the unlikely event that you sustain something like a fourth degree tear (all the way through, both external and internal), you would be stitched under a general anaesthetic in theatre.

Work on your perineal massage and active labour techniques, and you won't have to worry about stitches or tearing at all! ;) Prevention is better than cure...

And that wasn't a stupid question whatsoever. :D

Oh - and I've posted information in the new thread on whether a cut is better than a tear. (It isn't. :) )

It's amazing how every womans experience is different.
I was at Westmead, and needed to be cut. They actually called in a doctor before hand because I was having trouble getting the little one out.
This doctor did the stitching at the end though - even though there was about 2 other midwives there, not including the one cleaning the bub!
I'll be honest and say the doctor was a cow (at the time I thought this!), I had aneasthetic, and she tugged and pulled and it hurt - took some time to feel better afterwards too.

But now it's fine, so don't stress too much... I have a low pain resistance!!

Cosmic -
It IS possible.

I didn't have any stitches (tiny tear that didn't need stitching) and I pushed out a BIG bubba! (37cm head! )

Go that peri stretching and active labour stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah Cosmic your right on top of it!!! You'll have no worries.
And even if you do, it isn't that bad at all. Especially when your holding that baby!!! :)
I had an episiotomy, and I believe it was because of the epidural I had.
You'll be fine!! ;)
