OK mums!

My bub is 18wks old and a champion roller, but the past 2 days he has become obsessed with it. No joke! Put him on his back, and he's instantly on his front, pushing himself up on his arms and occaisionally sticks his bum up in the air. Problem is he HATES being on his tummy and starts screaming!!! He can only roll back onto his back 1 in 10 goes and gets himself so worked up that he buries his face in the mat and screams even more. If I help him to roll back onto his back, within 30 secs he's back onto his front. If I leave him to try and move himself, he just continues to cry. Last night he cried so hard he gave himself a red rash on the top of his chest!! This morning in his stroller he was even trying to roll over!!

How long does this obsession last? Should I leave him to scream as he gets used to being on his front and works out how to move? Is this him just getting frustrated with being stuck in the one place and trying to make moves towards crawling? Any ideas?

Thank you!!

With DD1, i left her to whinge until she figured it out...to an extent anyhow....I never left her to get REALLY worked up and hysterical, but she eventually got the hang of what to do. I think from memory it only took her a few days to work out that i wasn't gonna turn her over all the time.

Sorry i don't have any other ideas...

i'm with Shannon here...they do figure it out soon enough! I kept an eye on things, let him get frustrated just enough to figure out that he needs to do something, and then help him out. I was beginning to despair that Andrew would EVER learn to roll over again himself, but then one day it just clicked and he was off! Now he LOVES being on his tummy and won't have it any other way!

It will pass quickly...then you'll have another problem when they just keep rolling on and on away from you and banging into things and getting stuck and crawling everywhere! Oh the joy

I agree with the others you do have to let bubs work it out on their own.
Dont worry my bubs would scream & howl the minute he was on his tummy burying his face in the ground & flailing his arms & legs. He would also head butt the floor & use his head to raise himself up on the tips of his toes ! The other mums at my mothers group thought it was hysterical ! The clinic nurses all reassured me all was fine he was just one who didnt like tummy time but just to keep trying it adding a few seconds extra each time as thats a big time frame for bubs. I was also told to use a towel to prop him up with so he could look around a bit better & to put him on his tummy after changing his nappy just to encourage him some more.
My bubs is 8.5 mths now & has only in the last month or so come to love tummy time ! He rolls around everywhere & loves being on his tummy. So dont stress he will work it out its only him getting frustrated with wanting to do more & him not being able to coordinate it all to work.

Hi Sonia,

I was laughing as I read your post...my little girl is the same age (1 day difference) and she does exactly the same thing. It is kind of funny to watch but very frustrating...I just hope they work it out soon

Well Nathan seems to be getting happier on his belly - still obsessive about rolling but at least smiles and talks on his front now instead of just screaming. Progress! Thanks for the posts girls!

Taiya's mum sounds like it must be an 18-week phase huh?

DD2 wasn't very keen on being on her tummy until she figured out how to rollover herself and then it was only a day or two and she was much happier being there.

Sounds like your little one is going the same way...

Geeze I love you guys.. I was getting worried that my DD, who doesn't like tummy time, would never learn to roll...

Jaderocks - I think we all get stressed as to whether our bubs is keeping up with what the books say or what other babies are doing but when it comes down to it they do it in their own time.
Dont worry im still trying to say those words over & over as my bubs still hasnt started crawling & he is almost 9mths !
Patience is a virtue right ? hehehehe
