During my first pregnancy my waters broke at 2:30am so i had no idead that it was going to happen but I have heard that some women know when there waters are about to break.

Did you know that your waters were going to break? If so how did you know?

See now Mum_2B

I feel a bit ripped off. My waters never broke - with either labour.

I had a slow leak with number 1, there was never any gushing. With number 2, the waters were behind her so she came out and there was an almighty splash!

No, I had no idea.
Just woke up one morning and thought that's a bit wet. Went to the bathroom and it was more than a gush!
Maybe if I had been awake at the time I might have known???

I feel ripped off too (oh Deb these coincidences are increasing)!
My water didn't break for either labour's, the membrane's were ruptured by the midwives at the hospital!!

nope, no idea. I was sitting on the floor watching DH unpack as we'd just moved in 2 weeks before. Got up, walked to the kitchen & it started to trickle. Then it started to run

I just grabbed a disposble nappy & used it like a pad, it hold a lot more :)

Hehe, I used a nappy too. :o I felt like a real goose! Mine broke at 2.30am as well and I was still leaking a bit when I went in to hospital.

Well, no point getting the car seats all stained!

This is a great thread...
I was just wondering the same thing as I am due in 2wks!
So looks like its pretty unpredictable...
think I might just stay home for the next 2wks to save the public embarrassment

Just a small hint - a newborn nappy doesn't fit well into a big pregnant womans undies!!!!!!!!!

Sorry if tmi.

That is so funny Wattle. Never thought of that before. We just had LOTS of towels!!!!
I think the chances of them breaking in this way is only about 10% (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!), so I don't think you have too much to worry about Brooke!

Although, come to think about it, it did happen for me 2 weeks before his due date!! :p

Ive been worried about it happening in public too Brooke. But as I'm still working till the 9/12 im worried that they are going to break while im at work and I work with all males in an accounting office so imagine how embarassing that could end up being.

no waters breaking here either, but I've always been curious. All I heard was the slurping of the suction machine.........

I have not had my waters break in a gush, just a slow leak, but actually prefer it that way anyway, we will see what this labour brings...

A friend of mine was telling me how she was in bed fast asleep, and the next thing she knew, she had jumped out of bed, wondering what on earth she was doing, and a couple of seconds later, her waters gushed out all over the place, how's that for womens intuition? ;)

My partner and I drove into my sisters house that evening as my parents weren't going to be home. At about 7.30pm that night I felt like I just needed to go to the toilet all the time, but each time I did not much would come out. I went down stairs were everyone else was and it happened again. So I went and had a lay down and my sister came in at about 9.30pm asking if I was alright. I asked her what is like when your water breaks(she didn't know as she was only half way through her pregnancy, so I stood up to ring my mum and it just gushed out all over her new carpet. We just used towels. Got to the hospital at bout 10.00pm and it was still trickling out. Jayden-Robert was born the follow morning at 6.13am. I didn't have any drugs or gas but I didn't feel the contractions until bout 2.30am anyway.

So know you now, not like you needed all that useless info.

Thanks Taddy,

I have been like that for the past 2 days feeling like every 5 mins i have to go to the toilet but little coming out and bubs has gone very quiet compared to normal (yes still get at least 10 movements) and i was having some strong pains earlier today in my lower abdomen. So im hoping im nearing the end.

Yep im another ripped off mum ! I had mine broken by the midwife as they were trying to help encourage bubs to get a move on ! Didnt help !
My mum said she only ever had hers break properly the once with my oldest sister & that was a big gush while she was in bed ! she said my dad nearly hit the wall jumping out of bed so far ! So she made such a big deal about it i had towels & newspaper lining my side of the bed as well as our lounge just in case & i was also made to put a towel on the car seat when going to hospital ! what a waste ! otherwise with my other sister she had the same as a few others here in that it was like a trickle then with me they had to be done at the hospital.
Everyones different !
I found i pretty much went to the toilet continuously cause bubs pushed onto my bladder so much in those last few weeks so im sure your almost there especially if your having lower abdominal pains which means its all getting ready !
How exciting !!!!!

I still don't know to this day if my waters broke with DD#1. I think I leaked abit (early in the peace) and the midwife did some sort of test (from a pad I had on) and it turned a colour that she said was a bit of my waters. When I was in full labour and using the gas I am wet my bed and couldn't stop (I laughed as I was so high on the gas). DH told me I just we'ed my self thats all. Midwife could have said something but can't remember. So I don't know if that was it or not? Ended up have c/section with DD#1 and also DD#2 (C/section for #2 was planned so didn't have the joy of labour  )

With DD#1, my waters broke with an almost audible "pop", and I certainly felt a sensation when they went, other than the obvious wetness.

I'd just made it home from the swimming pool after decent long swim - thank goodness.

I don't know which I would be classified as .... I went into the hospital in full blown labour and my obs asked when had my waters broke and I had no idea ... absolutely none, no trickle no even mild wet pants ... nothing, we figured I must have gone to the toilet at the time whenever that was.

Second time round I was huge so convinced that there MUST be a lot of fluid ... and was artificially ruptured at the hospital. Looking back I so wanted to be at the shops so that I could see the look on the faces of those around me (I was really wacky after DD was born ... PND)

This time .... well probably go for a c-sect so who knows.

But if you are out in public just play it up like they do in Hollywood ... grab your back and scream at the top of your lungs "SOMEONE CALL A DOCTOR, MY BABY"S COMING!!!!!!!!!!!)

Aw, I want to be pregnant again with all the uncertanty of it all. No what am I saying, I must be crazy .

I worked up to Friday 10th Feb, that night my waters broke. It was pretty funny because my ob had prescibed phenergan for dreadful heat rash that was preventing me from getting any sleep. So I took the tabs and that made me groggy. I was in bed and it felt like I had wet my pants a little, so I got up, went to the loo and nothing. Change my undies, went back to bed and same thing again, I thought I had wet my pants again (this was at about 12). Did the same thing a couple more times but it only happened when I layed down.

I thought this is ridiculous, so I called up the labour ward and asked them if phenergan can make you lose bladder controll. The midwife laughed at me and said "no dear, your waters have broken. You had better make your way into the hospital now". I went in and told my husband that apparently my waters had broken and that we needed to go to hospital now. He jumped out of bed like a rocket and was all panicky, but I said no rush, go and have a shower, I'll just get my stuff together.

We got to the hospital at about 2 (we also used the towel method on the car seat - my husband had heard that watersdidn't come out of upholstery very well and was kinda freaking out about his car "I'm going to have to buy a whole new seat you know, so you had better keep your legs crossed" :D )

Thomas came approx 40 hours later by ceaser - I still didn't get any sleep!

Hahahahahah !
I like your style eleanor !
My sister refused to leave the house when she hit 7mths due to the fear of her waters breaking while she was out ! Her hubby & i forced her though !
One funny thing was the midwife at her antenatal class told all the women that they should carry around a bottle of apple juice with them if they were out & if it did happen spill some of that as well & then say "Oh whoops i spilt my juice !" I had to say i wet myself on that one !!!! fancy that !!!! Then when i was preggers she told me to do the same thing !!!!! I was like if my waters break while im out somewhere the last thing i will be thinking of doing is "spilling" some apple juice !!!!!
Some crazy ideas out there heh !

I had the slow trickle too followed by excruciating pain. I rang both my mother and the hospital who told me that it wasn't my waters breaking and that I would know. I had to have several baths upon the hospital reccomendation to cope with the pain. I was told not to call again until they were 10 minutes apart. Once at the hospital the next day, I was put on a drip to speed up contractions to break my waters. After several hours of non stop contractions and me screaming my head off, in so much pain I couldn' teven think of a swear word, they finally gave me some drugs and did an internal only to discover my DD's head and tht my water's had indeed broken, most likely when I thought they did the day before!!

With DD#1 i had a planned c/s so never experienced anything like that.
With DS i was having contractions for a few hours before my waters broke(in the bathroom thankfully),but it wasnt a huge shock.
WIth DD#2 i was doing the dishes when my waters broke..lol.Now that was unexpected, seeing as i was only 37 weeks and the other 2 were overdue.

My water didn't actually break until i was pushing! Everyone tells me that they should have broken them by then but with it being my first, i didn't know any different. I remember the midwife tell DH not to stand at the end of the bed as my waters hadnt broken yet. We had a bit of a laugh, thinking it was a joke, but when they did break we were stunned at how far it went!
DH still hasnt gotten over it!

With #1 the artificially broke the waters (grr never again)
#2, they didnt break until just before I needed to push...I was in the water and they exploded, it was soooo loud - like a gunshot or something lol! He was born 5 minutes later.

I know, I had an accident once in his car - heaven forbid - and the first thing he asked was how the car was! Not are you alright hunny or anything! Men! After all, isn't that what we have insurance for?

Sorry, a bit off the topic :D

I'd been having contractions really bad for 2 days, finally went into the hospital in the afternoon and at 11.30 DH and mum went home as they didn't think bub would come till morning. At 12 my waters broke and it was a gush. Kept leaking fairly heavily for a couple of hours. Bub ended up coming by c-section at 4.30 following afternoon.
I'm glad i was at hosp when they broke. I too was worried about it happening in public. This preg i don't really care! My friends waters broke the other morning in church! I think it'll be funny!
Sounds like most ppl's break at night though.

wow, exploding waters??
So glad I didn't get that - still, is mine any better choice?
First bub so no idea what to do, had learnt long ago not to listen to anyone so blissfully naive!
I think it was a weekend when I felt like I couldn't control my bladder, my mother told me this was because the baby was sitting on it (shes a midwife, how could I ignore?)
By Monday I had irregular contractions, I didn't tell my mum about them til late afternoon and I said don't worry about it - got a panadeine and went to bed.
On Tuesday they started again shortly after I woke (all this time Im still thinking I have a bladder problem!).
Again tried to sleep Tuesday and that night...
Again pains started on Wednesday decided I was going to the hospital just after lunch.
When being examined to determined my method of painkillers and whether I should go home, they found I was 3 centimetres dilated, my waters had broken from behind the baby (it wasnt my bladder after all!), and that I had to get ready to deliver... ...I don't really remember much else hehehe
Baby though was born 12hrs later.
Besides my mother and the midwives, even I was proud of myself for the past few days!!
