Hi All

I was wondering if any of you have any advice in relation to wrapping a new baby in this heat.

I gave birth to my third daughter 5 weeks ago and she likes to be wrapped before settling at night... but in this heat she is getting too hot.

Our house is not airconditioned and whilst I am seriously considering having it installed, I need to find a solution.

She is currently being wrapped in a Muslin wrap but really wants to be in bunny rug but then gets too sweaty.

My older two girls were both born in winter so I'm not really sure what to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :o

Probably the other Mum's here might have better advice but I would be really reluctant to wrap a baby especially in this heat as overheating can increase the SIDS risk. If you have to wrap, I would stick with the muslim and avoid the flanelette. I would also remove all clothing underneath and just have a nappy on.

I can't believe how sticking hot it is today

Thanks for the help... I have been leaving her singlet on so will try tonight in just the muslim wrap and nappy and hopefully this will be easier and I will let you know how we go.

I am reluctant to leave the ceiling fan on as they said at the hospital not to but I don't know... in our room we leave it on high all night and after the heat of today I'm sure it will be spinning at top speed tonight!

Hi Jodie

I have never heard anything about not leaving on a ceiling fan  You could always turn it off during the night if it gets too cool. We always have for our kids and they are fine. Maybe they think cold air beating on a baby is bad, I don't know.

Anyway good luck. I hope it rains soon, this heat is unbearable. I feel like rolling in snow in the swiss alps :p

Hi Jody

My son Aiden was born in November and right from day one, he refused to be wrapped at all, he would struggle to get his arms out when the midwives wrapped him. My paeditrician said that they shouldn't be wrapped anyway as they are not able to control their temperature when they are wrapped and this can increase the risk of SIDS.

In the heat, I just have a small pedestal fan going in his room, not pointing directly at him, but just towards the end of the cot. You would be surprised how much difference it makes to the temperature of the room just having the fan going.

However, it is going to be difficult when it comes to winter as he does not like being wrapped or using blankets at all. Maybe I could ask for your advice about what to do with him in winter :p

Dear Jody,

Sleeping bag in winter is really usefull. My daughter Alana now is 15 month, she hates blanket and she never like to cover up. So my mother in-law brought me sleeping bag and every night I always put her into sleeping bag before she go to sleep. She can't kick the sleeping bag and she have a lot of room to move or roll over and it's really safe for them and keep them warn in the winter. :)

Hi Tarn and Linia

Funny how this thread was called Help in the Heat and now we are worried about winter.... we must be stressed out Mums!

The sleeping bags are a great idea for winter.
I can remember when my second daughter was a baby we had one for her as she was born late October and also hated being wrapped.
Living here on the Gold Coast though I know you can get light weighted ones. The one that we had was a polyester/cotton (I Think - don't really know my materials very well!)... it was a Peter Rabbit design and thinking back we used that for ages with her - through the late Autumn when it was a little cold but not freezing.
I have seen the heavier type sleeping bags which are fleecy lined and will probably need to invest in one of those two for late June/July when it does get quite chilly here at night.
If you guys see them anywhere in the department stores please let me know as I will need to get shopping - WHAT A SHAME! :o
