Hi
I was wondering when you had your c/s did they put the catheter in before or after you had a spinal/epidural put in???

They put mine in while they were waiting for the dr to come and do the epidural - but that was 10 hours before my e c-s.

before, but then they couldn't get the epi in (my back doesn't curve) and I had to have a general.

Mine went in before the spinal. In fact I was still in the birth suite and was about to be transfered to surgery.

Thats exactly what happened to me.

I was wondering as when I got it taken out I said "is it going to hurt as much as it did going in", and the midwife said "didnt they put it in after your spinal". So I wasnt sure if u are suppost to have it before or after. Mine hurt a bit as she put it in wrong the first time and had to pull it back out and re-do it.

Same! It was quite painful indeed. And then when it was removed, they didn't empty it properly first so you can imagine the mess (sorry if TMI lol!). Not to mention a slight loss of dignity lol!!

I'd already had the epidural in for a few hours prior to them deciding to do a c-section so I already had a catheter in! It was put in shortly after the epi was in as it was then I decided I needed to go pee pee but just couldn't do it... sorry TMI!

My midwife was empting my bag and spilt it all over the floor all with a room full of visitors staring at my pee every where...Yuk!!! (sorry if tmi)

I can't believe they emptied your bag with visitors in the room:eek: !

If we didn't live in different parts of the country, I'd swear we were in the same hospital lol!!!

i think it depends on the hospital. heaps of ladies on here say they do it after but at the hospital i went to (and this was an elective for my second) put it in b4 as apparantly it saves time??? in the op room. well it didnt for us. i have a wierd shaped whatsie and so it took 5 failed attempts to insert it b4 they just said we will let them do it under spinal block. which took a whole of 5 secs!!!

and re: to the cathetar going everywhere, as an assistant nurse ive emptied a lot of bags and its soo easy to do discreetly without spills. thats terrible. must of been one tired nurse. a bit off topic but thats the prob these days, they are pumping the hours into the nurses making them vulnerable to mistakes like that

About an hour before. It was so uncomfotable!! I kept getting DH to check it wasn't leaking because it didn't feel like it was in right. And it came out the next morning.

hi

Mine went in before and it didnt hurt at all. It shouldnt hurt going in, they are doing something wrong if it does  all I can think is that they arnt using enough lubricant, very odd I dont think I've ever hurt anybody when inserting a catheter:rolleyes:

It shouldnt hurt coming out either as long as they have fully deflated the ballon. Its more a weird sensation than anything else.

The more I read on bubhub the more I dont want to go back to nursing there as so many dodgy ones out there it gives those of us who care a bad name:(

For both my Emergency CS and Elective CS, the Catheter was put in after my spinal block.

My SIL had prewarned me that I shouldn't let them do it before as it could be painful.

For future CS, insist that they put it in after your spinal or epi. After all, it's you who'll be in pain as they insert it.

I had an 'elective' (albeit unwanted and unrequired) caesarean and I had the cathetar put in while I was in the maternity ward. I'd been induced 3 times already, all failing, and so I'd been staying in the maternity ward. It was put in first-thing, before I even went anywhere near any surgical areas.

It hurt like hell. While I want a VBAC next time, and am pretty determined to get one, if I REALLY need a caesarean I will be requesting the cathetar to be inserted AFTER any sort of anesthesia. No way am I putting up with that feeling again. It was god-awful.

I had a emergency casarean and I did not feel any thing when they put the catheter in and I had not even had any thing for the pain before they put it in...

I had a c-sect and they put my catheter in after my epidural/spinal ...
I freaked out when they told me before the epidural they one had to go in.. and as soon as i went numb i stressed alittle more asking if it would hurt when they put it in.. They told me that it was already in and set to go...
It hurt a little when they took it out though

I had an emergency caesarean, after full dilation and, before they transferred me to theatre, they put the catheter in, and it hurt more than any other part of my very long labour. It was excruciating....and I saw the nurse shove it up me with all her might. I screamed, it hurt so much. I'm now extremely pi**ed off that it was done before my spinal.....if I ever need surgery again, I'll be demanding to have an anesthetic before any one goes anywhere near me with one of those things.

If they do anything against your will, this is classified as abuse. You have ALL the say in what is done to you in any hospital. 'Hospital policy' is not cut and dry, it's just what makes things easier for them. It is very disturbing to hear when someone has been completely disrespected within the hospital system. Lets also remember, birth is not a medical issue, even when medical care comes into place, such as with caesarean section. The birth should always still be considered a sacred right-of-passage, and every mother is in charge of every process that happens along the way. When you are in hospital, having a baby, they can't simply say "this is what we are going to do", they absolutely have to ask your permission, and discuss all options with you. You need to be the decision-maker in the end though, as it's your birth. I'd be writing a huge letter of complaint, if I were you - or taking it even further. I'm so sorry to hear you were treated in this way - they took full advantage of your vulnerable state, and it's just disgusting behaviour on their part.

With DS1, he was breech so it was elective C/S and i got the catheter in after the epi. With DS2 it was an emergency C/S and i also got the catheter put in after the epi. I didn't have to ask, this is just what they did. It was also a public hospial.

I had an emergency csect and it was put in before I went to theatre, so before the spinal.

It didnt hurt at all. It was fine coming out too.

At least the hospital got ONE thing right.

I can't believe they put cathetas in before the spinal that must be really painful. I had mine after the spinal, but my obs was running late so I don't know if that's why. It was gross enough having it taken out, i wonder if you can request for it to happen after the spinal?

It honestly shuldnt be really painful:no:  As long as they put plenty of lubricant on the catheter tip it should go in no problem and without causing any pain. I dont know what all these midwifes are doing to people but I've insterted a lot of catheters and never had any complaints:rolleyes:

I have had and emerg c/s and an elective one and both times had the catheter put in after the general (first) and the spinal (second). I cant believe they do it before it sounds ********. MANXIE - I think you need to go and train a few people on how to do it by the sound of this thread!!

They put mine in when i was in the birth suite before i went to the operating room. i found it didnt hurt so much, it was more uncomfortable the painful. however compared to contractions nothing really hurts.

Some advice for after your C/S is to not just stay laying down, get up and walk around as much as you can. (it does hurt to move) but the more you move the faster you heal. i had an emergengy c/s and i had absolutely no pain after a week and a half.

Yep I agree , LOL!!! In fact my DD ended up in hospy with rotavirus and they wanted to check for a UTI and wanted to do an in and out catheter. I said I want the Queen of Catheters to do it!

I am by no means the Queen but there are some people who will get it first time, with the minimum fuss and absoultely no discomfort. I am the type of nurse that if I dont get it after two go's then I will grab the most experienced nurse around and get them to do it. Maybe there just isnt that back up in a labour and delivery suite I dont know I've never worked there but I'm telling you girls IT SHOULD NOT HURT!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont know when they did it. they were so much in a hurry to get the baby out that they had to knock me out so i was sleeping through the whole thing. when i woke up i didnt realise i had it until about 4 hrs after having bub after the drugs and that kind of wore off.

my first two were emerg csects and they did it before the spinal was done.... it was 'routine' apparently..

third time was scheduled and I MADE SURE to write in my birth plan that i wanted it AFTERWARDS.. which they did and it was great never knew they had done it till i was told afterwards lmao

with my first two tho they hurt and each had me in tears... maybe im just sooky tho lol

after the epi (thankgod!) I was going through the urge to push stage when it was all happening though so they probably thought the epi was enough of a challenge! I wasnt at my nicest :-D
