we have a once a month BBq with our "group" had one last night adn it was just basic bbq food. but usually i always have some sort of cake mix around so if on short notice i have a visitor, i can quickly make a cake.
I always try to have a selection of fresh fruit, a nut mix (if there are no allergies), water crackers and some different cheeses.... camembert, brie, edam or swiss.. etc. nice bikkies for tea/coffee. Usually (a polite guest) will bring something along.. so we have that. That's if it's for morning or afternoon tea.. if it's for lunch.... some fresh bread rolls, a green salad, ham and salami, or whatever your planning on having.. a quiche or something.. But the staples for guests at our place are fruit, nuts, crackers, cheeses, bikkies/cake/bun.... for an evening 'catch up' I'd get some mini spinach and fetta/ricotta pasties, mini quiches, spring rolls as well as the 'staples' lol.. and some dips
I usually make a cheese ball and have some kabana and cheese and jatz. If they are over for Dinner we usually have a BBQ with just rissoles, steak, sausages and salad. Everything easy so you get to spend time with your guests and not the whole time in the kitchen.

I always have a cheese in the fridge, it is the YEA brand and it comes in black wax. It is delicious, about $4 and has a long used by date. Add some crackers and it is a gorgeous snack with a drink. Everyone comments on how yummy the cheese is! If I have fruit or dip around I will put that out too.
If it is lunch and I know before I do a mini pizza/open sandwich on Pita. Chicken, mango chutney and mayo with spinach is yummy, but any combo and then under the grill is nice (and you can pre make them!)
Good luck!

Chips/biscuits and dip goes down really well here. Also cheese and fruit platter and other finger foods like mini quiches, sandwiches, mini spring rolls.

Chips and dip always go down a treat.. So do biccies and cheese.. Some olives are always nice too.. Oh a sharp cheese and some quince paste is really good, I always like to have some in the fridge.. Some mixed nuts go down well too.. Sliced up kabana and sopme picked onion work well too...
For morning or afternoon teas I will make some biscuits, scones, muffins or a cake.. And maybe some finger sandwiches too...
For lunch or dinner, fresh bread rolls, a nice garden salad, a potato salad and some meat to pop on the bbq or some cold meats...

I love to have people over! I normally organise a selection of dips with toasted turkish bread and dipping biscuits.
Then I have the main dinner meal, maybe a chicken stir fry and rice or a bbq. Sometime easy that can feed a lot of people on not too much effort.
For desert I usually buy a loaf of banana bread, lots of fruit and some biscuits.
And make sure that the alcohol is close by
