I have been thinking lately about the possibility of donating my eggs. We have completed our family with two perfect, healthy kids and I would love to help another couple do the same.

My question concerns genetic screening of donors.

Cystic fibrosis runs in my mothers family and through genetic testing we undertook before conceiving DS I learnt that I am a carrier of the CF gene.

In order for any children to be born with CF the father must also carry the same gene. Fortunately my children's father does not carry the gene so my kids are perfectly healthy.

Does anyone know if this would exclude me from donating or would they just screen the father to make sure he is not a carrier which would ensure there wouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for any info :)

It doesn't necessarily exclude you from donating.
You will need to be totally honest with potential IP's.

If they chose to go ahead with you as a donor I imagine they would test the DH for the CF gene.

Your best bet would be to call a fert clinic and get all the information.

Good luck with it all.
The world needs more  to help people become parents.

Hi Emmylou
I have a friend who was looking into becoming an egg donor. She too is a carrier of the CF gene.
I checked with a Reproductive Immunologist for her and he said it would not exclude her from donating.
As Sarah has said, as long as your IPs know up front they can then have DH tested.
Good luck and congratulations on considering such a generous gift.

Hi Emmylou
My sister is going to donate her eggs to my partner and I, she tested positive to the CF mutation. The testing my partner had to have was a lot more comprehensive than usual, I think it was something like 33 different mutations, luckily he was all clear and she is still able to donate her eggs to me.
Its a wonderful that your thinking of doing this.
Good luck ally

Hi emmylou,
I know myself as long as all the tests come back okay it would be fine for you to donate. I'm sure who ever you become a donor for would be grateful to you for considering to help them and wouldn't find doing a few more tests to make sure everything would be okay. you are such a kind and genourous person to want to do this for a couple. Good on you hun and good luck in the future.:hugs:

Thank you ladies that's great to hear :)

The CF gene is actually very common - 1 in 25 people in the Caucasian population are carriers - so I had hoped I wouldn't be unable to donate because of it.

All the best to all of you and I hope you find your angel very soon :)
